I think I saw a UFO last night.  I was travelling home from Strangford at about 10 p.m. with my friend Houston.  Coming towards the roundabout at Carryduff there’s a hill overlooking the city and there straight in front of us was a bright white light hovering.  We noticed it immediately and wondered what it was, not a plane, not a helicopter, perfectly static looking down on Belfast.  We slowed down and, quite suddenly, it shot up in the air and disappeared.  Spooky or what.

A Tall Story

The Tall Ships are still being talked about and they put me in mind of a story worth telling. About 25 years ago I was having lunch with an old friend and we sat in the sunshine for a while chatting over a cup of coffee. He was talking about his family and reached into his pocket for his wallet. He fished out a picture of his children but at the same time another photograph feel out, it was of a tall ship, three masted and magnificent. I asked him the relevance and was quite fascinated by his reply.
“Did you know I was a sea captain once?” No. To me he had always been a well known businessman in Belfast, a big bluff generous man who could charm a bird out of tree who had helped me with various projects and always came up with the goods. He explained he loved the sea but gave it up for a land job the thing to do at the time. “After many years I thought about going back but it was a difficult decision with a wife and family and a business, should I or not. I needed a sign. Now you know me, I’m not a religious man but I thought I’ll open a Bible at a random place and if there’s any reference to the sea on any of the next four pages I’ll know I’m destined to go back to the ocean.” He paused for a moment. “I opened the Bible, page one, page two, page three and the first line was from a Psalm: ‘He caused the storm to be still so that the waves of the sea were hushed’. What do you think of that?”
So he applied for a master’s ticket but discovered his accreditation had run out and he would have to sit all the exams again and satisfy the authorities that he was capable to do the job. This he did, achieved his licence and started looking for a ship. “I was turned down so many times because of my age, I wasn’t a spring chicken but I was fit and well and capable so I kept applying until I got a reply from a company in Denmark.”
He immediately arranged to visit his new employers and sign on the dotted line. “Imagine my surprise when I arrived and discovered it was a sailing ship.”

It also turned out to be a training ship for young offenders to experience the challenges of sailing under canvas. Not quite what he anticipated. But this hero wasn’t to be put off although he almost backed out when they asked him was he ok to climb to the crow’s nest if necessary. “Now that was difficult as I’m terrified of heights!” But he didn’t tell them that; instead he returned to his home town, asked the Fire Brigade to help him by placing a ladder against the side of their building so he could climb it, then extend it so he climbed higher until he talked them into taking him up as high as possible on the turntable ladder. Only then did he pick up his ship and his passengers.

But the story didn’t end there. On one difficult journey taming these unruly youngsters, one of the boys was giving our captain a rough time and rather than taking orders he climbed the mast to the crow’s nest over 100 feet above. “I had no option but to follow him so I did, got up there and sat with him for over an hour as he told me his life story and I understood why he was fighting the world. I’ve been round a few corners as you know and I know my understanding of his traumas helped to the boy. We formed a bond, I told him my fear of heights and admitted I’d not thought of how I’d get down from our perch! That’s where he helped me and guided me to the deck.” This brave and dedicated man died some years ago but he saw his life out as a captain working off the shores on the north coast of Scotland.
Just shows, you think you know someone and if that photograph hadn’t fallen out of his wallet I would never have known the truth.
