I’ve had a bad morning with my Face Book, now fixed but why do they keep asking you to sign in – don’t these faceless wonders know I can never remember my passwords! The advice is have different passwords and don’t write them down so I have a number of codes I use but then I forget the code. Anyway, I’m now in business again. It’s amazing how traumatic it is to loose this method of communication but I’m over it now and on with the show.

One of many Face Book entries from Northern Ireland on Saturday 24th May 2015.   Yesterday was a red letter day for millions. I’m talking about the referendum in the RoI not Eurovision, although that gave an additional party feeling to the end of a memorable 24 hours. What a happy sight, all those people, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender and so called ‘straight’ friends and colleagues all gathered in the upper courtyard in Dublin Castle.

Although the 2000 individuals, plus the rest of us, knew the outcome before the result was confirmed, they were holding their breath and when that announcement came joy erupted and spilled all over the world. Tears and laughter, singing and hugging. One young woman said how she could now walk along the road holding her girlfriends hand and know people were ok with it.  Freedom.

A mature woman proposed to her partner knowing they will be able to live a happy and fulfilled life in the eyes of the majority of people and, as they see it, in the eyes of God although I doubt if the church sees it that way.

But one thing troubles me. It’s been said that no church will be forced into hosting and performing the marriage ceremony. Are we not then in an Asher’s Bakery situation here? Is this not discrimination? Could this not mean court cases? Be sure there will be some couple who will test the law on this and so it will go on. Although yesterday was an historic breakthrough, there are many more questions that will arise and have to be dealt with.

Eurovision was very profession this year – but long. Colourful with flags of all European nations and Australia and hardly a cross word!

Still Time to Catch this Play

The Lyric Theatre is still playing Shadow of a Gunman and still worth the visit. I saw it on the opening night and found it fascinating. This one act play by Sean O’Casey is set in Dublin 1920 during the Irish War of Independence but thanks to a mini skirt and a modern portable typewriter we soon realise this story could be any where at any time. It confused some of the traditionalists but for others it made sense and this subtle update meant the message had all the more impact. The stage is a cheap untidy flat in a run down area of the city. Two tall windows look out to the entry where the sheets are hung out to dry and the Auxiliary Division of the Royal Irish Constabulary have access to the people living in the overcrowded tenement.

The main characters are two unlikely lads, Donal (Mark O’Halloran) a romantic poet who shares a room with and Seumas (David Ganly) a salesman of cheap toys and braces. They are poles apart yet one of the most Intriguing scenes sees the two men lying in their beds and in the wee small hours confiding their different outlooks on life.

Upstairs lives Minni Powell (Amy McAllister) who is sweet on the poet especially as there’s untrue talk that he’s an IRA sympathiser but he says, what danger can there be in being the shadow of a gunman? She proves her love when the tenement is surrounded and the soldiers begin searching the rooms. Seumas’s friend, Mr. Maguire (Muiris Crowley), has stashed a bag in the room, they discover it contains granades so, as the soldiers approach Minni takes the bag and hides it in her own room, surely they won’t harass a young girl. Wrong. Minni being arrested and shot. The two men are left racked with guilt. “Minni Powell is dead, killed to save us.”

Strong performances from Dan Gordon. an Orangeman with a Bible under one arm and a picture of King William under the other, from Catherine Walsh another resident and from lloyd Cooney as a young Republical supporter (reminiscent of Buster in Mrs. Brown’s Boys), in fact the entire cast are impressive. At times of tension, director Wayne Jordan has introduced a sinister and unsettling feel to proceedings with an ominous. low hum vibrating throughout the theatre. These are O’Casey’s word, no updating here and with his daughter Siobhán in the audience on opening night it was important to honour his writing. Excellent was her verdict as it was for the majority of the audience.

Oh to be an heiress on a transatlantic liner, engaged to an English aristocrat but loosing my heart to a charismatic young Wall Street magnet. In 1934 Cole Porter wrote ‘Anything Goes’ and it’s been a hit on Broadway, off Broadway, the West End, film and television – so make a date, the SS America sails into the Grand Opera House Belfast on Tuesday and the beautiful heiress is none other than Zoe Rainey from Bangor Co. Down. “I’m really excited and looking forward to performing before a home audience. We only have a week in each theatre but it will be great to meet friends and see the family.” When we talked Zoe was clearing out her wardrobe. She was on a week off, one of only four the cast get each year when touring and it’s not open to negotiation but that’s theatre and Zoe loves it, she always has from an early age.

She was only seven when she accompanied her mum and sister Victoria to Bangor Operatic Society auditions and to everyone’s surprise ended up getting the part of Gretel with Christopher Logan as her Hansel, another Northern Ireland actor who is making a name on the UK circuit. “Mum knew Vivianne McMaster so she arranged I went along to Vivianne’s Saturday dance classes and when I was 18 I was off to London. I was lucky because during those intervening years, my generation had so much going on especially with Michael Poynor and the Ulster Theatre Company.” Life moved quickly. After A Levels, university beckoned but her life was theatre so she studied for three years at the Arts Educational School in Chiswick and at 21 graduated straight into the UK tour of ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ where she had the nerve wracking chance to perform professionally for the first time in front of the family including her late grandparents.

When Zoe became the Face of Denman she was so popular her Dad has retained her! “She’s had the time of her life! She sang at our first trade celebration in Italy, then Hong kong, Long Beach, Las Vegas, then our special event which she hosted at the Royal Albert Hall.” John is obviously proud of his daughters and supports Zoe in her ambition to move onto serious acting. “I am so grateful for the support of my parents, not only have they nurtured my interest in theatre, their support has also been financial and emotion.” This talented young woman is determined to succeed. After graduation from Chiswick her career took off, The West End with shows like ‘Wicked’, ‘Hairspray’ and ‘The Woman in White’, the National Theatre and ‘She Stoops to Conquer’. A big break this year was being cast in the film ‘Mr. Holmes’ alongside Sir Ian McKellen although, as she points out with a smile, it was only one line. “It was great to have a scene with him, such an encouraging man, we talked a lot between takes, all the time in a train carriage moving up and down the tracks somewhere in East Sussex!” But it’s not all plain sailing. ‘Anything Goes’ was due to run for another four months but, despite receiving rave reviews, with the downturn in the market and people prioritising their budgets, it will close after next weeks Belfast show. She philosophical. “You just go into survival mode. Over the last number of months I haven’t been able to attend auditions and see what’s on offer so now I’ll be busy with my agent finding work in the future.” Like most actors, Zoe multi-skills. During any ‘resting’ time she works as a teacher’s assistant in primary schools, usually one-to-one with children experiencing behavioural difficulties; at the same time she continues her dance and singing classes in London and looks after her health. “I’ve studied nutrition,” she smiles, “I now have a blender that zaps four of my five a day so I’ve a good start to the day before leaving the house.
