The worst event of last week was the shocking death of Olive Cooke. This 91 year old woman somehow managed to carry a ladder to the bridge over the Avon Gorge in Bristol, climbed over the railings and jumped to her death. It’s reported that she received up to 260 begging letter a month and phone calls putting her into a difficult position, she didn’t like to say no. When a friend realised she had 27 direct debits payable to charities, with her permission he cancelled them.

The agencies employed by the charities themselves – and incidentally these subcontractors are expected to follow a strict code of conduct which includes the fact they should not harass or hassle – then contacted her persuading her to restart the payments.

It all got too much and presumably she saw only one way out, taking her own life. It’s a tragic story but since this report people have been coming forward to tell of the pressures charities are putting on them. I certainly have been a target after sending a phone text to a charity which guaranteed a £5 donation. Of course they then had my mobile number and so the phone calls began and I can see how someone could well be browbeaten into agreeing to taking out some form of ongoing donation. It’s something of a game for me, trying to outwit the persistence of these men and women who try to make me feel bad about not agreeing, wanting to give me a run down on the work they do, on and on.

I can cope with cold calling, I’ve been to the countries where funding is making it easier for the people of these countries to live a fulfilled life. I have my own charities I point out, I am a journalist I know about these things I tell them.  Sometimes I keep saying “Hello hello, can you hear me?” and they soon get fed up. If it’s for my husband I say I’m his secretary and ask if they have an appointment to talk to him, that usually does the trick.

I suppose we have to endure Graham Norton again on Saturday with Eurovision. He is truly a twitterer on just about everything except his chat show where he’s quite good. But I went clean off him after last Sunday’s BAFTA awards. To me anyway, he wasn’t and isn’t really very funny, better than Steven Fry but much inferior to Chris Evens. who was only superb on the VE Day concert on BBC.

Good for Stephen Rea for winning Best Supporting Actor  for his portrayal of an MI6 boss in the BBC spy drama, ‘The Honourable Woman’ which I couldn’t follow but I found it riveting to watch. On the other hand I did appreciate ‘The Missing’ but can’t understand why James Nesbitt wasn’t acknowledged for his acting; I was also surprised that Mrs. Brown’s Boys was beaten at the finishing post. Like Ant and Dec, Brendan O’Carroll was becoming a fixture and fitting of these award ceremonies so good to have some new faces at these self indulgent events. Stephen Rea, who was educated at Belfast High School and Queen’s University, is a highly regarded actor and deserves the recognition. Very laid back and so talented.

The actor Danny Dyer who plays Mick Carter in EastEnders was in the audience, also very laid back but for the life of me I can’t see the attraction either as an actor or as a heart throb, he’s always crewing gum and looking into the middle distance! It would be great if Alfie or Shirl buy him out of the Queen Vic and the Carter family move on and Linda learns to smile again. No hope. Whose baby is it anyway? A lot depends on that answer tomorrow evening and please let Dot go – all this negativity is getting me down. I know, you’ll say stop watching and you are so right but there’s something about on going stories, you want to know what happens next! On the other hand, when I do give Coronation Street and EastEnders a miss for a few weeks, nothing much seems to have happened. Roll on the nice warm evenings and sitting outside in the garden with a good book or better still, good friends.

The Sean Crummey Memorial Fund

Talking of talent, Seán Crummey was a special man, modest and charming and brimming with ability. He was a political satirist, the creator and writer of the BBCs ‘The Folks on the Hill’ and a mimic par excellence. It all began when he phoned the Nolan Show pretending to be an irate cleric and it ended in 2011 when at the age of 53 this much loved man died from bowel cancer. But his story doesn’t end there. Such was his impact on the people who loved him that they decided his name will live on in the Sean Crummey Memorial Cancer Fund supporting the research work being carried out by Queen’s University of Belfast Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology. The monies raised, somewhere in the region of £55.000 to date, is funding the meticulous work of a young Phd student of 23, Matthew Alderdice who has come to know the Crummey family well and remembers Seán for special reasons.

Matthew’s dad David, is ex-Lord Mayor of Belfast, politician and a dermatologist by profession and his uncle John became Baron Alderdice and took his seat on the Liberal Democrat benches in the House of Lords in 1996, one of the youngest ever Life Peers.   “I used to watch ‘Folks on the Hill’ waiting to see my dad making an appearance. Uncle John was often the butt of jokes!”

Now Matthew is working on the cancer that killed the creator of the popular television and radio show. His research concentrates on ‘personalised medicine’, tailoring therapy to the patient. “Unfortunately thearpy can be a one size fits all approach,” he explains. “Some people will respond but others won’t. Our research will help establish who will be physically able to accept the drug treatment and who won’t, then it’s a case of looking for other means of treatment. Some years ago when I attended a lecture on toxicology and heard of the toxic effects of chemotherapy treatment I was horrified at the side effects and now I’m excited by the potential this research will have on peoples lives.”

Matthew plays down his talents. He is a brilliant young man dedicated to his work. “It’s a nine to five job,” he says. “Although there are many night’s when I don’t leave until I’m done! So often it’s more like 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. There’s no way I want to miss that Eureka moment.”

Survival rates have doubled over the last 40 years and the Cummey family are pleased with reports that Matthew’s research into bowel cancer has received worldwide acclaim.

“The project got on it’s feet thanks to the memorial fund, there are a number of such funds supporting various cancer research projects in this building including the Heather Clarke Fund set up after her death by her husband Darren. In this section of the lab you could trade in one piece of equipment for a house! Over here,” we move into another area, scruplously clean and sterile, “here you’re looking at individual machines worth £50,000 up to £114 million. This is a space where the equipment is the best of its kind in Ireland and it’s a pleasure to work in here.”

There are over 200 researchers in the building on Belfast’s Lisburn Road, they work as a team; although everyone has a different skill set, he explains that they all need each other when it comes to understanding and eventually beating cancer with the help of funds like that set up by Seán’s family.

His brother Brendan told me how they established established the fund just after Sean died. There was immediate support with people offering to run races, hold golf matches, social clubs and sports clubs were amongst the organisations that took the Fund under their wing. It’s no wonder, the entertainer knew everyone!

Growing up with this brother must have been a lot of fun. “From an early age he was impersonating teachers and pop stars,” Brendan said. “He as an impressionist for donkeys years, John Lenaghan first got him to speak to John Daly at Downtown and pretend to be various personalities. Some of his favourites were Pope John Paul II, and Bill McLaren and of course our local politicians. He also wrote and acted in ‘Stormont’, a stage play produced by Martin Lynch at the Theatre at the Mill in Newtownabbey in 2010.”

I saw that show and Seán was brilliant playing Ulster Unionist Michael McGimpsey and Sinn Féin’s Gerry Kelly. He must have been a great teacher during his 17 years at La Salle in West Belfast, He was involved in drama and music as well as French class room studies. Seán, the fifth of six children,  grew up in Norfolk Parade on the Glen Road and became a pupil at St Kevin’s Primary School aged just 3 years old. As a pupil of St Malachy’s College Belfast, he discovered his passion for languages. He graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 1980 with a BA in French and Classical Greek. In the late 90s he assumed the stage name John Day and worked the after dinner circuit developing his impressions so often used in voice over commercials.  It was said at Sean Crummey’s funeral that those he mimicked didn’t mind, they would never have taken offense because his was a very gentle humour, very clever and never vicious.

“He was a compassionate man,” Brendan said,  “modest and shy. We are proud of him and we want to keep his name alive and recognise his role in teaching and broadcasting. We are also very proud that Matthew is taking that compassion forward through his vital work on cancer research.”

A Touch of Class

I wanted to make mushroom sauce that didn’t come out of a Campbell’s soup tin and found this extremely tasty recipe. It works so I pass it on for use in chicken dishes especially. It’s heavy on the cream and I cut that down by half.

Method Melt 1 oz (30g) of butter over a gentle heat in a medium sized saucepan.

Add three finely chopped shallots and fry for 3 – 4 minutes.

Add one crushed clove of garlic and fry for another 2 minutes.

Add 1 lb 2 oz (500g) of finely chopped mushrooms and season with salt and pepper. Stir all of the ingredients together and cook until the mushrooms have softened and darkened in colour.

Turn the heat up on the stove and pour in 4.5 fl oz (125 ml) white wine. Stir the ingredients and cook until the wine had reduced by two-thirds.

Turn the heat down and stir in 7 fl oz (200 ml) cream and a pinch of nutmeg. Serve hot. Enjoy.
