My head is full of sweety mice. The election has come to it’s conclusion yet still it rumbles on – towards what? Dear knows but for sure it will be interesting and again dominating the air waves. If I feel like this now, how on earth do the journalists and pundits feel, hours upon hours of broadcasting, all day and, on Thursday, all night too.
Now the commemorations for Victory in Europe; last nights concert at Horse Guards Parade was nothing short of a masterpiece of production and presentation. What about Chris Evens, always my favourite but now on a new level of accomplishment. As I type the service in Westminster Abbey is underway, I not a monarchist but you’ve got to hand it to the Queen and her family and how does she climb up and down steps without hanging onto something? Wish I knew her secret. The historic building and the congregation from all walks of life, now the walk past, all bringing colour and character to the proceedings. These events seem to run like clockwork and who ever is behind the BBC coverage of the programmes I’ve watched, and Five Live coverage on radio, deserve a hugh pat on the back. Woops – I’ve just seen a hugh camera being wheeled from a side aisle toward the body of the kirk – the director will have gone ballistic but sometimes it’s good to let people know how it’s all choreographed!
Big Bird Watch
So a seagull has killed a little dog in the south of England. Sadly pecked to death apparently. Living not a million miles from Belfast Lough I’ve noticed these birds have become bigger than I remember during my growing up and who can blame the bird, we feed them and encourage them to come inland so if they see a fast moving little creature underneath I suppose they think it’s a fish. Hold onto your ice cream when you go to the beach this summer, they love those too! I’m told that in some places half the population of seagulls have never even seen the sea! Rather like the statuesque heron which graces a flower bed in the garden.
In Edinburgh, town residents have been issued with gull bags, strong hessian sacks to put their plastic bin bags into before putting them out for collection. Because so many properties are terrace style, regular bins are not possible so the birds had a gourmet time pecking open the black bags and feasting on the contents. If the bags were hung on the railings apparently it made it more difficult for them because they can’t get peck in flight and now they don’t visit in the same way!
I have great sympathy for a friend who lives off Lisburn Road, she’s terrified of flying creatures be they butterflies or birds and once I had to rush across town to rescue her when the seagulls landed in the back garden! We have a couple of herons who give a fly pass most days. Sometimes when there is a seagull overhead for an instant I mistake it for the heron so big is it. Then when the heron arrives there is no doubt, such a magnificent creature, that slow dignified action, I feel calm every time I see them, where ever it is, it usually guarantees a good day.
Their habitat is a marshy terrain and those who work there believe the heron warns them against wandering into dangerous areas and their croaky call will lead them to safety. Apparently here in Northern Ireland it’s thought that the fat of a heron, ‘killed at the full of the moon’, is an excellent remedy for rheumatism! Another belief is that this bird teaches us majesty. ‘Not in the pompous, arrogant and over-inflated sense, but in the literal sense. The heron teaches us to carry ourselves with a sense of pride and dignity, to love ourselves non-pretentiously and to take the time to share our dignity, our time and our compassion with others.’

I saw the Martin Lynch production, ‘My English Tongue, My Irish Heart’ at the Waterfront Studio last week. This is a remarkable look at Irish men and women emigrating to England and the heartbreak such journeys have caused through the generations. Although there are many stories woven into this piece of theatre, we follow the two principals, Protestant Susan from Northern Ireland and Catholic Gary from the South. Both university graduates they meet and fall in love. Everyone seems to be talking about ‘mindfulness’ as if it’s something new.
Remember when Ed Miliband used the technique at the leaders debate making notes to ‘remain calm, never agitated’, during his final round of the recent Masters Tournament at Augusta, golfer Justin Rose wrote on his score card, ‘one shot at a time’. One of the tabloids had a section on staying slim FOR EVER with the mindfulness diet and there’s a best selling Mindfulness Colouring Book for adults with the slogan ‘colour your way to peace and calm’. There’s no secret to mindfulness, it’s being aware, being firm with yourself, concentrating on the moment and thinking positively. Actually the example of eating is a good one; how often do you sit with a book, homework or television being quite unaware of how many biscuits you’ve eaten, the one sweet that becomes two till you mindlessly finish the packet? Now, if you were mindful that wouldn’t happen. For me, portion control is applying mindfulness, remember the mind is a muscle that needs to be exercised. But there’s a lot more to the subject because it’s been scientifically proven that mindfulness can reduce stress, ease pain, boost immunity and help control depression.
Frank Liddy has been practicing mindfulness for 25 years. We met in AWARE Defeat Depression headquarters on Duncairn Gardens Belfast where Frank has his desk and where chief executive Siobhan Doherty explained that the organisation has been supporting people affected by depression since 1996. Depression can show itself through low mood, loss of interest, loss of appetite amongst other things and she said, if these symptoms persist for more than two weeks, you should get help; that time scale surprised me. From early beginnings in Derry, there are now over 20 support groups run by trained volunteers, all people who know what they are talking about because this charity employs men and women with experience of depression, including the Board of Directors. One of the services Aware offers is run by Frank, a mindfulness practitioner and a man who has studied the subject for many years. His interest was the result of what he calls a rude awakening. “I was in the Club Bar in University Street. I left with a friend and we were just down the road when a bomb went off. I was first on the scene and the world changed. It was dark, the lights were out so I saw nothing but I heard groans and picked out debris, it was death and destruction.” Born in Clonard West Belfast he was no stranger to the Troubles but this was especially traumatic. He also remembers Mother Teresa being interviewed outside the Mater Hospital in the 70s and the question was – when will Ireland be at peace? Her reply didn’t please him. “She said, when people have suffered enough. I didn’t want to hear that.” So he began searching for answers and studying a non-violent way and all the signs pointed to Buddhism and the Dali Lama; since then Frank has studied at the Jampa Ling Buddhist Centre in Co. Cavan with the Mongolia holy man Venerable Panchen Otrul Rinpoche and with Belfast born Ryushin Paul Haller, the former Abbott of the San Francisco Zen Centre. “It was like looking at a new menu and I wanted to taste the food.” And this he has done through courses and classes, introducing people of all ages to this soul food of awareness. He worked alongside the Dali Lama when he visited Belfast and well remembers the day hundreds of people were turned away from St. Anne’s Cathedral because it was so packed, I was lucky and I recall the wonderful, peaceful words of His Holiness. Frank was also with him when he visited Clonard Monastery, close to the place this Catholic man was born and he talks of the deep sense of respect the Dali Lama had for Mary. Frank’s message on mindfulness is straightforward. “When we worry our mind is in the future, we are reaching out to it to master it but we aren’t succeeding. Having peace of mind means coming back from the future and into the present – that’s where peace resides. Being present, being in the zone – that’s mindfulness.”
In The Zone
Many years ago in the hills of Donegal I drove to the local pub to collect my daughter and her young friends who were staying with us. The boys wanted to walk so we were all girls together. It transpired that one of them had had a dreadful row with her boyfriend. She was in tears. So, at the top of the hill looking over the bay to the cliffs beyond, I stopped the car and turned the four of them out onto the little road. It was after midnight, you could touch the stars and there was a sort of murmuring, perhaps insects enjoying the smell of sleeping clover.
The girls were a bit startled when I formed us into a circle. “Hold hands please,” they did, “now close your eyes and listen.” We stood silently transfixed for I’m sure about six or seven minutes, we were in the zone and mindful. Then someone giggled and we all joined in. The point is, they’ve remembered those precious moments when things fell into perspective, the row wasn’t worth bothering about and would be sorted in the morning, life was good when we had ourselves and each other. I now realise that was practicing mindfulness. I do that trick a lot and people love it, give it a go, just listen, appreciate the moment and be thankful you can hear.
