It’s almost ten o’clock in the morning.
In Belfast the sun is shining for now, set to change they say; in London they are lamenting the cold wind and rain for the marathon. In Nepal its 2.30 in the afternoon, the temperature is 72F and there is broken cloud.
The tragedy that is this dreadful earthquake reverberates physically around the region for hundreds of miles, India, Bangladesh and beyond. There’s no doubt that in the mid 70s, Robbins found Hurst an irresistible character, generous to a fault, travelling the world surrounded by fascinating people. During his years living in London, breakfast was usually champagne and freshly squeezed orange juice, supper in a swanky restaurant might mean a starter of lemon pie, two further slices as a main course and pudding would be another slice of lemon pie! He dressed for his part adopting the persona of a businessman in a three piece stripped suit when necessary or for more unorthodox happenings he relaxed as the bohemian he was. A man of all persuasions, Anglophile Ulsterman, a Protestant who had converted to Catholicism and a homosexual who loved women. Only people to have two Blue Plaques erected locally in their honour, Hurst and Francis McGinn pioneer for the deaf community; Brian’s in Queens Film Theater Belfast, reads: ‘Directors Guild of Great Britain Brian Desmond Hurst 1895-1986 Film Director born in Belfast’ and a second plaque was unveiled at his birth place, 23 Ribble Street in East Belfast. Following his education at the College of Journalism in Belfast, École des Beaux Arts (Paris) and The Ontario College of Art in Toronto, Brian then moved to Hollywood where he quickly rose from set artwork to movie production. I imagine for biographer Robbins it was hard to separate fact from fiction when writing this fascinating book which is a revelation of the film industry, stories of happenings behind the scenes, the life of an extraordinary man of great panache. He was outrageous, camp and colourful but beneath the theatricality there was a steely sense of purpose, to make the best films, an ambition realised with titles including ‘Riders to the Sea’, ‘Ourselves Alone’ set during the Irish War of Independence, censored in the South and banned in Northern Ireland. ‘Scrooge’ starring Alistair Sim, ‘Tom Brown’s Schooldays’, ‘Malta Story’ with Alec Guinness and ‘Playboy of the Western World’ – titles that conjure up the legends of cinema. Born Hans Hurst he changed to Brian during the First World War when, in 1914 he signed up with his mate Bobby McKenzie and joined the Royal Irish Rifles to fight at Gallipoli long before taking up his film career. As I say, the chapter on Gallipoli is breathtaking and disturbing. Robbins records Hurst’s words, from trying to enlist in Belfast to fighting on the front line. He regales the writer with stories of brothels and grapes picked in deserted vineyards. It sounded like a breeze, Robbins says. Hurst immediately asks the young man what he knew about the Gallipoli Campaign. Nothing, was the reply. And so the tragic story unfolds, he tells it in detail, the bloodbath, the hand to hand fighting with bayonets, torture and abuse, it’s a moving chapter to the point of tears. I certainly was left in no doubt of the bravery of the Belfast boy who was to became famous as a film director. He worked with of the stars, directing Alastair Sim, Alex Guinness, Sir Alexander Corder, Noel Coward and Sir Michael Redgrave, his mentor was John Ford who introduced him to the film industry and was to influence his work. The roll call goes on, Vanessa Redgrave, Richard Attenborough, Siobhan McKenna, Noel Coward and Dirk Bogarde, friends with them all, as he was with Lord Louis Mountbatten.
Importantly his 1946 film, ‘Theirs is the Glory’, is acknowledged to be the only feature film to accurately portray the events of the Battle of Arnhem. It’s acclaimed as the biggest grossing war film in the UK for nearly decade, a war film like no other as Hurst took 200 members of the 1st Airborne back to Arnhem and Oosterbeek to reprise their role in the Battle with a realism that could only be achieved using those who had first hand knowledge. Hurst was proud of it: “The film is my favourite because of the wonderful experience of working with soldiers, and because it’s a true documentary reconstruction of the event. I say without modesty it is one of the best war films ever made.”
Another Special Man
We had the great pleasure of welcoming playwright David Seidler to the Grand Opera House on Tuesday 21st April 2015 to join the audience on the opening night of his play The King’s Speech.
Talking to him before curtain up was fascinating, between taking calls from New York and London trying to sort out a ‘deal’, he explained that as a boy he had a stammer and so identified with George VI and took a great interest in his story of consulting with, and eventually becoming a lifelong friend of, the Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue.
The play was given a rehearsed reading in an Islington Theatre in 2008 basically for the benefit of writer and a few producers who might be interested. Well, they were. Not only theatre producers but film producers as well and the resulting film which starred Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush has a huge success. It was interesting to hear that as Seidler was working on his script in the 1970s he found Lionel Logue’s son who opened his father’s archives but insisted the writer got the permission from the Queen Mother before going any further and it turned out that she did not want him to continue his work in her lifetime so he abandoned the project. For her it had been an unhappy turn of events that catapulted her husband onto the throne and into the limelight and caused him so much stress. He died in 1952 at the early age of 56. Although the film is impressive, the stage play is captivating, much more personal, a chance to hold our breath as the king (Raymond Coulthard) attempted to get his words out.
The tensions built up between him and his therapist (Jason Donovan) and the two men from such differing backgrounds came to understand each other and form a lasting friendship. Lionel Logue understood the king’s frustration at not being able to achieve perfection because he had suffered the same rejection in his quest to become an actor.
The cast in this play became the court that surround the king. Archbishop Cosmo Lang (Martin Turner) Winston Churchill (Nicholas Blane) and Stanley Baldwin (William Hoyland). His wife, later the Queen Mother, is royally played by Claire Lams and Myrtle Logue (Katy Stephens) is her foil with a skip and a step and an outward show of love Queen Elizabeth could only dream of. And there was the culprit himself, David, Edward VIII (Jamie Hinde) and his scheming lover Wallis Simpson (Felicity Houlbrooke). When the government asked the various colonies what they thought of the proposed marriage of David and Wallis, they also sent the question to Ireland. Their reply (roughly) – we don’t care if he marries the whore or not – brought the house down! There was great audience particiation with little woops of delight when he got it right, laughter when he got it wrong, although they fell short of Ballymena audiences in the days of Pathe News films. Any footage which featured the royal family would receive loud applause! There were two stars in this production – the cast as a whole and the set. A semicircle of rectangular wooden blocks all fitting together to give a background of different types and colours of wood but concealed in this wall are doors, windows high up for the BBC announcer to broadcast and in the second act, these walls revealed half a dozen portraits of past kings and queens and at the back a stain glass window which sets the scene for the coronation.
The most moving moment comes at the end of the evening when on 3rd September 1939 Great Britain declared war on Germany and the king addressed the nation – without a stammer. He had learned to take his time, use buzz words between sentences, some of them very unkinglike! He succeeded in reaching his goal with the help of probably his only, certainly his best friend. It was moving, I was in tears, David Seidler was in tears and the audience rose to their feet in appreciation. I don’t support The King’s Speech will be back here but if you get a chance to catch it in some other theatre during the tour, please go see.

Biblical prophecy tells us that this Jewish Messiah who will take the stage will be the antichrist “who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God” (2 Thessalonians 2:4). For a time he will bring about a false peace, but “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (Matthew 24:15)…then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be” (Matthew 24:21).
More importantly, the power that runs the world wants to put a RFID microchip in our body making us total slaves to them. This chip matches perfectly with the Mark of the Beast in the Bible, more specifically in Revelation 13:16-18:
“He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.”
Referring to the last days, this could only be speaking of a cashless society, which we have yet to see, but are heading towards. Otherwise, we could still buy or sell without the mark amongst others if physical money was still currency. This Mark couldn’t be spiritual because the word references two different physical locations. If it was spiritual it would just say in the forehead. RFID microchip implant technology will be the future of a one world cashless society containing digital currency. It will be implanted in the right-hand or the forehead, and we cannot buy or sell without it. Revelation 13:11-18 tells us that a false prophet will arise on the world scene doing miracles before men, deceiving them to receive this Mark. Do not be deceived! We must grow strong in Jesus. AT ALL COSTS, DO NOT TAKE IT!
“Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name” (Revelation 14:9-11).
People have been saying the end is coming for many years, but we needed two key things. One, the Third Temple, and two, the technology for a cashless society to fulfill the prophecy of the Mark of the Beast.

We all know God exists. Why? Because without Him, we couldn’t prove anything at all. Do we live our lives as if we cannot know anything? No. So why is God necessary? In order to know anything for certain, you would have to know everything, or have revelation from somebody who does. Who is capable of knowing everything? God. So to know anything, you would have to be God, or know God.
A worldview without God cannot account for the uniformity and intelligibility of nature. And why is it that we can even reason that God is the best explanation for this if there is no God? We are given reason to know or reject God, but never to know that He does not exist.
It has been calculated by Roger Penrose that the odds of the initial conditions for the big bang to produce the universe that we see to be a number so big, that we could put a zero on every particle in the universe, and even that would not be enough to use every zero. What are the odds that God created the universe? Odds are no such thing. Who of you would gamble your life on one coin flip?

If we are willing to humble ourselves in prayer to Jesus, to confess and forsake our sins, He is willing to give the Holy Spirit to those who keep asking of Him; giving us a new heart, leading us into all truth!
Jesus came to free us from the bondage of sin. The everlasting fire was prepared for the devil and his angels due to disobedience to God’s law. If we do the same, what makes us any different than the devil? Jesus says unless we repent, we shall perish. For sin is the transgression of the law. We must walk in the Spirit so we may not fulfill the lusts of the flesh, being hatred, fornication, drunkenness and the like. Whoever practices such things will not inherit the kingdom (Galatians 5:16-26). If we sin, we may come before Jesus to ask for forgiveness (1 John 2:1-2). Evil thoughts are not sins, but rather temptations. It is not until these thoughts conceive and give birth by our own desires that they become sin (James 1:12-15). When we sin, we become in the likeness of the devil’s image, for he who sins is of the devil (1 John 3:8); but if we obey Jesus, in the image of God. For without holiness, we shall not see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14).
The oldest religion in the world is holiness through faith (James 1:27). What religion did Adam and Eve follow before the fall? Jesus, Who became the last Adam, what religion does He follow? Is He not holy? He never told us to follow the rituals and traditions of man but to take up our cross and follow Him (Luke 9:23). There are many false doctrines being taught leading people astray. This is why we need the Holy Spirit for discernment. Unlike religion, holiness cannot be created. It is given to us from above by the baptism of the Spirit.
