Easter Greetings
Easter is such an important time of the year to many. What a story and if the reports are accurate, one of the most dramatic events in any Christians life. I’ve been closely involved with productions of Jesus Christ Superstar and I’ve watched how the theatre show has effected people, especially young people. Who says theatre isn’t worth it’s weight in gold – the DOE maybe but anyone who appreciates the effort that goes into putting on a show can only marvel at this musical by Tim Rice and Lloyd Webber. When the Ulster Actors Company staged it a couple of times many years ago, we all took to the bible to read for ourselves what happened during Holy Week, so did audiences and discussions afterwards were fascinating and we all gained something from the experience. More somber was Good Friday in St. Anne’s Cathedral on Friday when, between midday and three o’clock, the Dean John Mann lead prayers and meditation and hymns. This was followed last night at 8.30 pm. by another special service on Easter Eve. I’ve been at several of these services over the years in various parts of the world also in St. Annes when as darkness begins to fall, a new fire is kindled outside the Cathedral. ‘A lighted candle is then carried into the darkened interior and individual candles are lit from a common source. Gradually in word and music the saving history of God’s people is recalled, ending with the proclamation that Christ is risen.’
And so today is Easter eggs and for me, bread which I haven’t had since the beginning of lent.
I went to The Pillowman in the Lyric Theatre yesterday afternoon. It was a well filled mattinee performance and a gripping drama from the Decadent Theatre Comapny from Galways. Why it’s billed as a black comedy I don’t know, it was just pure black. A twisted tale of a young man who wrote short stories featuring grewsome murders, sadly these murders were being played out in the neighbourhood and who should be suspected by the writer himself. He is being interrogated by two vicious policemen who are convinced he is the culprut – or might it be his special needs brother? The circles within circles fascinate, playwright Martin McDonagh has you up one road only to present a cul-de-sac and you’re wondering all over again. Great acting, marvellous set and a very fine afternoon of drama. The play continues until Sunday 19th April 2015 and if you like excellent theatre, go and see The Pillowman. www.lyrictheatre.co.uk
The Leaders Debate. My goodness the only natural thing about the two hour marathon was the brilliant heckler who obviously couldn’t disguise her frustration. I never saw such a sanitised performance in my life, it reminded me of the film Coma where all the stars were existing rather than living. The debate was so cleansed of natural reaction that it was amazing – the in word you may have noticed, everything these days is amazing! The heckler was 33 year old Victoria Prosser who has said that she was asked to leave after making her feeling felt during the debate. Afterwards she said: “My cause is speaking the truth and making sure as many people as possible start questioning people at the top, the 1%, who are not working in our best interests. I can’t vote for anyone who I know is lying or omitting facts. That means I couldn’t vote for any of the people that I saw tonight. Even though some of them had good ideas, I know that they are all out for the same cause.” I expect we’ll hear more of Miss Prosser. The scandal, real or imagined, surrounding Nicola Sturgeon will brighten thing up a bit, and I bet there will be more dirty tricks before it’s over.
It’s sad that most of the commentators judged the night on performance rather than on content. Who did best? Who came out on top? The whole thing begs the question of the Election, or as it’s called locally, the Alection. With 5 weeks to go all the media can talk about is the election, talking to those standing for election, those experts covering the election, the man in the street, old uncle Tom Cobley and all. When I say media I mean television and radio, thankfully newspapers are well balanced when it comes to news coverage which is why they will last despite gloomy comments that fly around, will someone tell me how you can possibly read a newspaper ‘on line’.
I went to the Grand Opera House in Belfast to see the Priests on Monday night. It was an experience. The place was packed with excited women from all arts and parts, one woman and her friends had travelled from Liverpool. She told me they go to as many of the concerts as they can: “Don’t call me a groupie what ever you do, but I am!” The evening proved one thing, pray is mighty. The three Priests, brothers Father Martin and Father Eugene O’Hagan, along with school friend Father David Delargy who are now world famous, where in Washington on Sunday 29th March, they’d just completed something like 12 concerts in 14 days and they were pushed for time, it was important to get to the Grand Opera House Belfast before curtain up at 8 p.m. on Monday 30th March. A tight timetable. All was going to plan, on the plane, ready to take off but then something happened, plane didn’t take off! What were they going to do? They prayed. Miraculously another flight was found, it took off for Dublin, arrived Monday mid-morning, they jumped in to a waiting car and arrived in Belfast just after lunch. A quick rehearsal with the choir Cappella Caeciliana and the orchestra, probably a cup of tea and a wee sit down and then it was time to charm the packed house and bring their special brand of music to our ears. It was touch and go but they were as professional as usual and we had no idea of the drama until they told us their time clocks were well out of kilter!
What a night, especially important and enchanting as this ass Holy Week and they had picked a programme of appropriate songs and hymns.The setting was simple, tall straight leafless trees strategically placed on the stage, each lit with coloured spots that shoot up into the roof of the Opera House and out into the auditorium. The orchestra on each side of the stage and the choir joined the Priests as well as performing their own numbers. Ave Maria (Schubert) came first and it was awesome, the music and voices soared and the image on a huge screen at the back of the stage showed the Virgin Mary in vibrant colours just like a stained glass window. The image changed to suit the music and it added to the reverence where necessary. Although there was much sacred music there was also popular numbers like Amazing Grace and You Raise Me Up. My favourites were How Great Thou Art and the Halleluia Chorus from the Messiah. Sometimes I felt there was to much music!
The choir, the orchestra and the Priests all at one time usually worked well but I would have preferred a little more acapella from the three men with the wonderful gift of superb voice and when the choir sang unaccompanied it was stunning, it was possible to hear the voices blending with each other. But that’s splitting hairs. It was a great night, warm and friendly, positive in every way and never have I heard the Opera House pulsating so effectively from curtain up to curtain down including the interval when we were treated to St. Dominics choir singing from the balcony on the second floor so their music rose up and spilled down to the members of the audience in the cafe area. The Priests will be back at sometime in the future I’m sure so if you want a special night of music, book early.

A reader of the Irish News sent me a copy of Jo Berry’s book Shades of Jamie Dornan with the instruction to read Page Three. Can’t wait for Tuesday and the Chris Barber Big Band in concert at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast. New Orlean to blues, to late 20s Ellington and a whole lot else. When I was at school I heard a record (they were records in those days) of Ottilie Patterson singing Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight and I was hooked. Then joy of joys, one day walking along Queens Arcade with my school friend Carol, who should come the other way but Chris and his wife Ottilie Patterson.
I went weak at the knees but I was able to stumble over and in a whisper ask for their autographs. The next highlight was many years later when I was one of the patrons for the Ulster Cancer Foundation that was and to publicise Daffodile Day I was asked to give a bunch of daffoldils to someone I admired. I chose Ottile P. I phoned her in Scotland, arranged that British Airways fly her over and the Europa Hotel offer to give her one of their lovely rooms for the night. She arrived on Friday for a party on Saturday morning when all the local jazz man would be in attendance. On the Friday night I arranged to have dinner with her. I phone her room to say I would wait in the foyer and I stood at the doors of the life, weak kneed again. The doors opened and there was my little star, a small woman, neat as a pin with that big genuine smile she was known for. We had a great night during which she told me how much she loved her husband, the sadness of divorce and her retirement from a heady career. She requested only one thing. “Please don’t ask me to sing.” That was ok, no problem, she hadn’t performed for a long time and no one wanted to put pressure on her. However, next morning when jazz musicians crowed in to the Eruopa and the music started to permiate the hotel, she suddenly stood up, went to the poano, asked, I think it was Ivan Black, to move over and she started to play and sing the blues. What a memory.
It was after I wrote about this that I came across Erskine Willis, another fan but one who had made it his business to collect memorbelia. He was also in touch with the writer Ron Cassidy who had just begun researching the lifestory of jazz man Chris Barber, when he discovered another author was well underway with a book about this trombone playing musician. So Cassidy turned the spotlight on Barber’s wife instead and in Ottilie Patterson he discovered a much better story. A teenager at Regent House she was described as a precocious child, she had a natural aptitude to piano playing, and a love of art. She recalls that one day, shopping with her mother in North Street Arcade, wearing her best blue Sunday coat and matching hat she took all her money, five shillings, and bought W.C Handy’s Blues Folio which opened up the world of blues and jazz. Born in Alabama Handy worked on a “shovel brigade” in a local furnace and the music made by the workers as they beat shovels, altering the tone while thrusting and withdrawing the metal against the iron buggies and singing to the rhythms came from the soul. “Southern Negroes sang about everything,” he said, “they accompany themselves on anything from which they can extract a musical sound or rhythmical effect and set the mood for what we call the blues.” And this became Ottilie Pattersons meat and drink. “You sing just like one of us,” was a compliment from a black lady in Chicago which she treasured.
This book, ‘Ottilie Star of County Down’ (the The has got lost in translation) charts Ottilies career until her death in 2011 at the age of 79. But the interesting thing is, although Cassidy’s book is a great insight into the woman and her life, it’s was at a long dining room table in Comber that I found the secrets laid out on the table in the home of Erskine Willis. Erskine did his dancing in Belfast but his friends in Comber talked about this local girl with the great voice and when he bought his first record it was an EP (extended player) of Chris Barber and his band and an unidentified girl singing ‘Careless Love’. He knew it was Ottilie and to this day can’t understand why when even the writers of the song get a mention, the singer didn’t. This local historian has successfully put that right but collecting her memorabilia and subscribing to books and radio programmes.
It’s a wonder to leaf through Ottilie’s albums, to read telegrams of congratulations, intimate pictures of herself and her husband, Ottilie with her Latvian born mother, with her pet dog and above all, her own writings meticulous in Olde English script calligraphy, her poems, her sketches, autographs of the famous and the words of the songs she made famous. Happy days and roll on Tuesday.

I must tell you I had this all written when the laptop crashed and – you’e guessed it – I hadn’t saved and I lost it, both literally and metaphorically! There’s a lesson there, so, keep safe, keep saved and have a good week!
