What a sad week it has been. The plane tragedy in the Alps and the ripples of trauma that have reached out through familie, friends and the world. Hitting a mountain at 430 miles per hour is a terrible thought and no matter what they say, passangers must have known for quite a few minutes what was going on. Philip Bramley’s son Paul had been staying with friends in Barselona, he was returning home on the flight and died with 149 others. His father said the details of why the co-pilot did what he did were relevent, what was important, he said, were the people who died, they must never be forgotten he said and the natural beauty of the mountains should be restored and not remembered for this tragedy. How brave and gracious.
It’s impossible to imagine what an event like this can do to mothers, fathers, brothers sisters grannies, family and friends. But there are other tragedies much nearer home, people have died and families mourne. How life can change in a minute.
I enjoyed a couple excellent plays recently, God Bless the Child in the Lyric was an adaptation of three Frank O’Connor short stories into a most entertaining evening. Three primary school children (played by adult men) tell us their hopes and fears and at just seven years of age their confidences are very innocent and told without spin, just how it was for them – a father coming home from the First World War and taking his place in bed with his wife, unaware that he was shutting out his son who had taken over the role of man of the house. Then there’s the little boy who disliked his sister and granmother so much he planned to murder them. What would he do when came the confrontation with the prist at his first confession. What would the priest say when he confessed to a possible murder.
The third was a young man who didn’t know what he would do when he grew up although he’s sure of one thing, he would be famous. Larry is a loner, a sissy but at heart a genius, he was at least sure of that. But his genius takes a wobble when the girl he falls in love with, a little older maybe eight or nine, throws him over for a boy in another class.
Plays Move On, Books Remain
The point of telling you this after the play has left the Lyric for the rest of its tour round Ireland is that every word we hear on stage is spoken as written by Frank O’Connor so it’s a joy to be able to get a book of his short stories and read them. The writing just flows, the plots so simple and it’s easy to identify with each character. We were all there once. The play was made up from O’Connor’s stories, My Oedipus Complex, The Genius and First Confession.
The same goes for Jeeves and Wooster which was on at the Opera House last week. You can pick up a book and make their acquaintance. I never was one for aristocratic chinless wonders until I met Bertie Wooster. He had me in stitches, clueless but kind, well meaning but innocent, any original thought he left to his man, Jeeves. Jeeves and Wooster are famous and no wonder these characters from the pen of PG Wodehouse, and adapted in this performance ‘Perfect Nonsense’ by the Goodale Brothers, has won many awards. It was superbly directed by Sean Foley, actor, writer and a director with a delicate touch. He works his cast of three to the Nth degree. Here again the play moves on to other theatres but the stories linger on and are available in book form from whence they sprung. A farce or a frolic, whimsey or drama? A bit of everything and no wonder someone on the way out was heard to say: “That was genius!”
That’s why I love theatre so much. Years ago I worked with the Ulster Actors Company at the Arts Theatre, I was new to drama but boy did I learn. Writing the programmes meant researching the subject be it French farce, World War 11, the Beatles or Irish history. You always learn something when you go to the theatre.
A Little Bit of History
I’m enjoying ‘Indian Summer’ Sunday evenings on Channel Four. Roll on 9 o’clock tonight! At the dinner party for the Viceroy on his visit to Simla during the British occupation of India in the 30s, one dinner guest asks another to sing ‘Jessie’s Dream’ for the Viceroy and for me it immediately rang a bell.
When Adrienne Catherwood was sorting through family letters in her Co. Down home, she came across an album of sheet music and a story, now almost 160 years old. She showed me the fascinating album which includes the words and music of ‘Jessie’s Dream’ alongside the background story in a letter describing the event and I found it intriguing especially as there are so many military anniversaries at the moment.
‘Jessie’s Dream’ tells the strange story, in song and in a less well known letter, of the Relief of Lucknow in 1857 a famous and ferocious battle during the Indian uprising. It was said that the native Indian soldiers who mutinied in 1857 ‘refused to bite the cartridge’ meaning they would not bite open the paper cartridge which contained gun powder and musket ball to be fired from rifles. That saying was later refined to the familiar ‘bite the bullet’. Why not? Because of rumours that the grease on these cartridges designed to keep them dry was either pork or beef fat – pork being abhorrent to Muslims, cows being sacred to Hindus, hence their refusal to bite them.

I myself could no longer resist the inclination to sleep, in site of the continual roar of the cannon. Suddenly I was aroused by a wild unearthly scream close to my ear, my companion stood upright before me, her arms raised, and her head bent forward in the attitude of listening. A look of intense delight broke over her countenance, she grasped my hand, drew me towards her, and explained, “Dinna saved!’ Then , flinging herself on her knees, she thanked God with passionate fervour. I felt utterly bewildered; my English ears heard only the roar of artillery, and I thought my poor Jessie was still raving; but she darted to the batteries, and I heard her cry incessantly to the men, ‘Courage! Courage! hark to the slogan – to the Macgregor, the grandest o’ them a’. Here’s help at last!’ To describe the effect of these words upon the soldiers would be impossible. For a moment they ceased firing, and every should listened in intense anxiety. Gradually, however, there arose a murmur of bitter disappointment, and the wailing of the women who had flocked to the spot burst out anew as the Colonel shook his head. Our dull Lowland ears heard nothing but the rattle of the musketry. A few moments more of this death-like suspense, of this agonising hope, and Jessie, who had again sunk to the ground, sprang to her feet, and cried, in a voice so clear and piercing that it was heard along the whole line – ‘Will ye no believe it noo? The slogan has ceased indeed, the the Campbells are comin! D’ye hear, d’ye hear?‘ At that moment we seemed indeed to hear the voice of God in the distance, when the pibroch of the Highlanders brought us tidings of deliverance, for now there was no longer any doubt of the fact.
