The Week That Was In It
Although I didn’t see the Aurora Borealis on St. Patrick’s Day night I might as well have. Does that make sense? To elaborate – my daughter Susie phoned from Donegal at about midnight yelling “I can see it, I can see it,” and proceeded to give me a brilliant running commentary on the green curtain across the sky and a white spotlight. She wasn’t sure if the spotlight was some reveller driving home from Joe’s after a night of celebration but it all added to the fun.
She and I had travelled to Tromso inside the Arctic Circle two years ago to view the Northern Lights without success so this was really important. Had more success with the Eclipse. Everyone said it was ‘amazing’, it was the in word on Friday morning. At 9.27 a.m. there was a shadow cast over our garden, a low sinister wind swept through the big laurel bush, most of the birds stopped singing in surprise and a church bell began to peel! Spooky or what. I had the pinhole camera ready but for some reason couldn’t get the gadget to work, had a bucket of water but couldn’t line it up with the sun but eventually, when a thin cloud came over, I was able to see what was happening by looking at the reflection on the car window. What with that and the official arrival of spring it was a good day.
It wasn’t just as exciting as 1999 perhaps because 16 years ago we had a great breakfast party in the garden and we’d the correct goggles and everyone was telling everyone else where to look and where not to look. I have one photo somewhere of three women all looking in different directions, glasses on, pointing to what they thought was the sun! It was fun and we created a memory.
Friday was more low key although on Radio Five Live Pater Allen was very laid back about the whole thing. He was interviewing some eminent professor about the eclipse and rambled on about it being a random event because you could never tell when the moon would come between the earth and the sun. The professor was obviously dumb struck but eventually, and politely, explained that it was anything but random and it could be worked out to the nearest minute. Indeed I heard that the exact time of eclipses for the next 400 years had been charted.
Peter Allen bumbles around and I much prefer Nicky Campbell who is as sharp as a tack and has a highly developed sense of humour.
Thursday night was the Belfast Telegraph Woman of the Year awards at the Ramada Plaza at Shaw’s Bridge Belfast. It was a tremendous night, great friendly atmosphere and genuine appreciation of the winners of various catagories. Maud Kells was one of half a dozen women who had won their individual categories but when Maud was announced as overall winner and the inspirational woman of the year, we stood applauding this remarkable woman.

Maud is a member of WEC, international Worldwide Evangelisation for Christ, a mission organisation which focuses on ‘church planting’, bringing the gospel to over 50 nations, usually serving people in the poorest countries, their message being Love God and Love Your Neighbour.
