Pit Little Pat, Little April Showers
Yesterday was manic, the Grand National, the golf, the boat race (male and female) the Philadelphia Story on television starring James Stewart and Katherine Hepburn and a new iPad to master. With the help of a daughter, a son and three grandsons I at least got started but the problem is passwords. How on earth am I supposed to remember what was the name of my favourite children’s book; I must have selected some title to put on my original password on a computer bought about 20 years ago! Can I remember? Can I what. So I am a bit stymied when it comes to iTunes and I can’t get the Ottilie Patterson album I so much want. Anyway I will persevere.
All That Jazz
I went to hear the Chris Barber Big Band at the Waterfront on Tuesday. What a treat. My husband and I were very good jivers in our day and it was so tempting to retain our youth but knees and backs forbad such a thing. It didn’t stop another couple who give a wonderful display of jiving, I think almost professional, certainly they had danced together a lot of times and it was mesmerising to watch.
It used to be a threesome, Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball and Chris Barber. We would wait for their concerts and enjoy a night of three brands of jazz under one roof – the beautiful Waterfront Hall. Now Bilk and Ball are dead but we still have our living legend who, at 85, is as mellow as ever – singing, playing his trombone and steering his nine fellow band members through jazz classics from New Orleans to Miles Davis. The setting was simple, black curtains from roof to floor, subtle ruby and violet lights here and on the stage the instruments, almost 30 all waiting for their musicians to bring them to life. And that’s what Barber does, he brings his music and his musicians to life, he lives his music, he moves from foot to foot, swaying, listening, appreciating. Someone should write a Barber Shuffle Blues.
Barber gave a running commentary of what they were going to play, introducing each member of his band, reminiscing and in general being very entertaining. Sadly, it was very difficult to make out what he was saying a lot of the time, not sure why, perhaps microphone problems. One thing he did say was that he loved playing the bass but doesn’t play any more because of arthritis so he leaves that to our own Jackie Flavelle who got a huge ovation when he was introduced. Stories abounded from the musician and the audience – one was about playing The Old Rugged Cross in a church hall and the Fathers being appalled that people were slow dancing to this religious hymn.
The evening opened with the Barber signature tune, Bourbon Street Parade and the hits kept coming, Jubilee Stomp, Jungle Night in Harlem and Duke Ellington was ever present. There were sublime moments when a trio of clarinets played, when two trumpets harmonised, then two trombones, a banjo, drums and a big double bass played pizzicato, or to you and me, the strings plucked with the fingers. Individually and collectively this is a marvellous group of musicians. Dressed in dark suits and black bow ties, it sometimes seemed as if they’d like to break out of the straight jacket and throw caution to the wind, especially when they played Cornbread, Peas and Black Molasses – it was mighty. There was a poignant moment when the band’s excellent clarinet player gave us the Monty Sunshine hit Petite Fleur”. The only surprise was a half empty house, perhaps because it was Easter Tuesday but it’s a pity because so many of my vintage, who jived our lives away in the 1960s, missed a great night although there were a few young people, one teenager told me how much he loved jazz and especially the Chris Barber band, not surprising as it turned out Jackie Flavelle was his grandad! And yes, as I said there was dancing in the aisles although most of us saved our strength to give a rousing, standing ovation at the end of the concert.
It was marvellous to get to talk to him before the concert. He was in great form and keen to chat, this man who has played with Van Morrison, Mark Knopfler, Bill Wyman and John Mayall was full of chat about hip replacements and to my joy, Ottilie Patterson his late wife. He was kind and loving in what he said and I will treasure that intimate time with a man I admire so much.
Theatrical Events
This week brings more theatrical offerings. I’m looking forward to, Lally the Scut in the MAC Theatre Belfast. This world premiere opens on 14th April and runs until 2nd May. It’s the biggest production Tinderbox has mounted, a company of 27 including the cast of 12 local actors. The story is full of dark humour and drama, it’s funny and it’s thought provoking and it’s very relevant to the crazy society we live in. A child falls down a storm drain, the mother goes for help to her husband, her mother-in-law, journalists, town councillors – even the Catholic church comes into this dysfunctional tale.

That Play
On 16th and 17th of April Pan Narrans Theatre company present ‘I, BANQUO’ at The Lyric theatre in Belfast. A one man retelling of Macbeth as seen through the eyes of his murdered best friend. Both Cambridge graduates and Northern Irish natives, director Oisin Kearney and actor Michael Patrick (above) tell me they are excited to be bringing this phenomenal script to life in their home city.
The spirit of Banquo languishes restlessly. Murdered by his best friend. He needs to tell his story. What does he remember? What does he know? More importantly, will you be there to hear it?

Conflict Writ Large
A reader of the Irish News sent me a copy of Jo Berry’s book Shades of Jamie Dornan with the instruction to read Page Three. She was upset, so the first thing I did was to turn to Page Three as instructed. Fifth line down: ‘Of course, Jamie grew with the Troubles – the conflict in Northern Ireland that raged between Unionists and Loyalists ……..’ What! This is basic research and and an unforgivable mistake. It’s a pity because the rest of the book is a study in detailed fact finding on a vast number of people and topics, hopefully accurate.
It should be pointed out at this stage that at no time did Jo Berry talk to Jamie Dornan, the book is reportage, conversations taken from newspaper stories, television interviews and other material, so although the book cover claims it’s a ‘no-holes-barred biography of the man who is Christian Grey’, we learn nothing new about our star. The promise is that Berry will reveal ‘the real man behind the silver screen like never before’ but what she does is to chart his life without knowing him.
She relates his relationship with Keira Knightly, there’s a potted history of his great aunt Greer Garson and that his dad had dreams of becoming an actor but chose to be come a doctor. Anyone who knows Professor Jim Dornan knows only too well he is one of our most respected obstetricians, and as he has delivered over 6000 babies, a lot of families know and love him! Chronicled are the basics of Jamie’s career, member of a boy band, modelling, hired an agent in 2005, broke into films, Beyond the Rave a vampire movie produced by Hammer Film Productions and Shadows in the Sun with Jean Simmons with a few more for good measure. Then we come to The Fall, a psychological TV thriller starring Gillian Anderson and that’s really when our boy became noticed, a relationship with Knightly helped raise his profile but we read, in 2013 he marries Amelia Warner, soon there’s a baby on the way and he’s offered 50 Shades of Grey featuring bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism. Now, when we are promised that this book features behind the scenes confessions, you expect some as yet unexposed behind the scenes confession but alas no. It’s potted histories all the way from Hammer Films to Dakota Johnston’s Mum, Dad and Step-dad, a book of general interest but disappointing for fans of Jamie Dornan. Shades of Jamie Dornan. I was better looking at a lit candle and watching the flame take on strange shapes. Basically, as I see it, I was learning to concentrate and that has stood me in good stead. Father Colhoun claims that yoga is devilish. It’s devilish good in my opinion, nothing negative or satanic about it.
In the article I wrote for the Irish News I talked about my friend called Helen who was deeply into yoga for health reasons and at parties she’d go through the routine called Surya Namaskar, the Sun Salutation, just for us to marvel at her suppleness. This is a series of 12 postures performed in a single flow, graceful and although it looked very exhausting, she controlled her body not only by bending and stretching but also by her inhale and exhale of breath. She did it twice, the first time for the right side of her body and the second for the left, just as in life, everything in yoga should be balanced. It only took about a minute as far as I remember. She always came up smiling, not out of breath and glowing. “This exercise,” she explained, “extends every part of the body, gets the blood flowing. I do the routine when I get up in the morning and it sets me up for the day.” She was encouraging: “It’s not over exerting and the physical moves can be adjusted to your own abilities.
When you do it correctly these movements massage, detoxify and stimulate every organ in the body and importantly brings suppleness to the spine.” I gather the Sun Salutation is a sort of yoga shortform when you don’t have time for a complete session, a sort of pickmeup. Ideally it should be done as the sun rises, outside on grass in your bare feet, not always possible in Northern Ireland! Better perhaps in a warm room, some suitable music and loose clothing. I find yoga breathing techniques invaluable when there’s stress in the air and especially when I’m at the doctor. My blood pressure was up recently and I explained I suffer ‘white coat syndrome’, although there aren’t too many white coats in local surgeries any more. I asked to have the reading taken three times. Gradually I brought my measurement down by more than ten points to a reasonable level – through deep breathing and concentration.
The fact that yoga has been used and developed by Hindus over centuries and has spilled over into our culture is to me a very positive thing for body and mind. My ‘spiritual health‘ is still intact!
Apparently the Vatican’s chief exorcist, Gabriele Amorth, claims that not only is yoga a potential source for evil, so is reading Harry Potter. We’re doomed!
Well, the article giving the pros and cons of yoga, stirred up a hornet’s nest! For instance:
“Dear Anne I read with interest your article on yoga but I have to say I disagree with your views. Fr Colhoun is right: the practice of yoga is dangerous for a number of reasons. It is not a matter of doing exercises — we have gyms and sports’ centres for that– it is primarily a spiritual exercise. But what spirits? The spirits are not from God or the Holy Spirit but are rooted in Hinduism and other Eastern pagan cults. As the priest rightly said those who do yoga leave themselves open to all kinds of evil spirits. A further point is this: many people who practice yoga go on to other forms of New Age spiritual exercises, such as Reiki, tarot cards etc They can unwittingly be drawn into the realm of the occult. Fr Colhoun is not the only priest to condemn yoga, there have been many other instances of priests speaking out and banning it from Church halls. Yoga is incompatible with the practice of the Catholic Faith. For Catholics who have been involved with yoga or other eastern spiritual exercises a simple deliverance service can be obtained through a priest. I am disappointed that yoga is being promoted so widely even being introduced in schools. It seems to be filling a void since so many people have turned their backs on their Christian Faith and practice. Regards.”

In December of 2017, Donald Trump made history by recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Why is this big news? Because by this the Jewish people of Israel are now able to press forward in bringing about the Third Temple prophesied in the Bible.
Jewish Rabbis have publicly announced that their Messiah will be revealed in the coming years who will be a leader and spiritual guide to all nations, gathering all religions under the worship of one God.
Biblical prophecy tells us that this Jewish Messiah who will take the stage will be the antichrist “who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God” (2 Thessalonians 2:4). For a time he will bring about a false peace, but “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (Matthew 24:15)…then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be” (Matthew 24:21).
More importantly, the power that runs the world wants to put a RFID microchip in our body making us total slaves to them. This chip matches perfectly with the Mark of the Beast in the Bible, more specifically in Revelation 13:16-18:
“He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.”
Referring to the last days, this could only be speaking of a cashless society, which we have yet to see, but are heading towards. Otherwise, we could still buy or sell without the mark amongst others if physical money was still currency. This Mark couldn’t be spiritual because the word references two different physical locations. If it was spiritual it would just say in the forehead. RFID microchip implant technology will be the future of a one world cashless society containing digital currency. It will be implanted in the right-hand or the forehead, and we cannot buy or sell without it. Revelation 13:11-18 tells us that a false prophet will arise on the world scene doing miracles before men, deceiving them to receive this Mark. Do not be deceived! We must grow strong in Jesus. AT ALL COSTS, DO NOT TAKE IT!
“Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name” (Revelation 14:9-11).
People have been saying the end is coming for many years, but we needed two key things. One, the Third Temple, and two, the technology for a cashless society to fulfill the prophecy of the Mark of the Beast.

We all know God exists. Why? Because without Him, we couldn’t prove anything at all. Do we live our lives as if we cannot know anything? No. So why is God necessary? In order to know anything for certain, you would have to know everything, or have revelation from somebody who does. Who is capable of knowing everything? God. So to know anything, you would have to be God, or know God.
A worldview without God cannot account for the uniformity and intelligibility of nature. And why is it that we can even reason that God is the best explanation for this if there is no God? We are given reason to know or reject God, but never to know that He does not exist.

Jesus came to free us from the bondage of sin. The everlasting fire was prepared for the devil and his angels due to disobedience to God’s law. If we do the same, what makes us any different than the devil? Jesus says unless we repent, we shall perish. For sin is the transgression of the law. We must walk in the Spirit so we may not fulfill the lusts of the flesh, being hatred, fornication, drunkenness and the like. Whoever practices such things will not inherit the kingdom (Galatians 5:16-26). If we sin, we may come before Jesus to ask for forgiveness (1 John 2:1-2). Evil thoughts are not sins, but rather temptations. It is not until these thoughts conceive and give birth by our own desires that they become sin (James 1:12-15). When we sin, we become in the likeness of the devil’s image, for he who sins is of the devil (1 John 3:8); but if we obey Jesus, in the image of God. For without holiness, we shall not see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14).
The oldest religion in the world is holiness through faith (James 1:27). What religion did Adam and Eve follow before the fall? Jesus, Who became the last Adam, what religion does He follow? Is He not holy? He never told us to follow the rituals and traditions of man but to take up our cross and follow Him (Luke 9:23). There are many false doctrines being taught leading people astray. This is why we need the Holy Spirit for discernment. Unlike religion, holiness cannot be created. It is given to us from above by the baptism of the Spirit.
