1st March announced with gales and hail stones. Snow apparently isn’t too far away!   Very dramatic and it was good be inside looking out.  Everyone rants about the weather, I wonder why?  We have such a temperate climate and few worries – just think countries where they have extreme weather.

I was in company at the end of the week and we were discussing the increased anti semitism around Europe and right here in Northern Ireland.  And we got to discussing aches and pains and eventually put the two things together and asked ourselves what it must have been like in Auschwitz when suffering toothache, or having an attack of colitis or a broken leg.  It makes you think.

Been Nice to Know You

So goodbye Jesus, it was good knowing you. I had the pleasure of having coffee with Glenn Carter who played the part of Jesus Christ, an interesting character who was enjoying being in Belfast but last night the cast  packed up, the trucks  left the Opera House for Blackpool and most of all, the children of Stagecoach Theatre school  waved goodbye to the friends they made over two most exciting  weeks. The children added greatly to the show, obviously loving every minute, acting as well as singing.

I’m very much in favour of children attending dance and theatre schools, like the Youth Lyric who are preseting The Great Gatsby (picture above of Leonardo DiCaprio in the film) this week at the Waterfront Hall and it promises to be a great, enthusiastic, talent filled show. “The story of the self-made millionaire Gatsby, who pursues his undying love for the elusive Daisy, told through the eyes of Nick who is drawn into the lustful life of greed, obsession and danger.” Runs until Saturday, dearest ticket £10.

Success, Success, Success

I’m late blogging today as we were entertaining. Two dear friends who live in Lille in France came for lunch, lovely local lamb and green peas etc. the Sunday lunch I remember as a child, then ice cream for pud! Except it was a log of ice cream with toffee and tasty ‘bits’.   But I only realised this morning what a mistake I’d made. All along I’d thought the Ireland match was on Saturday so invited our guests on Sunday and so avoid a clash. Only when I settle yesterday afternoon to watch ‘the match’ did I realise I was shouting for Scotland (in vain), I was a day out.

Anyway, when Pat, originally from Carrickfergus and Peter from England arrived I apologised to Peter and said of course we would have the television on if he wanted to see the match. I was praying he’d say yes and he did.

Murry and ODonnell power they way to a 26 to 3 win over Italy on Saturday. Respect.
Powering their way to success over Italy.  Now they have England under their belt.  They are surely on their way!

Patricia Hawkins nee Windsor is originally from Carrickfergus and what a life she has had since those I first met her over 50 years ago. Pat joined Ulster Television around 1962, but soon married local man Maurice McBride and left to live in India when Mackie’s Engineering posted him to Calcutta. We loved getting her letters, always written in green ink, telling us of the heartbreak of street children and women trying to bring up their families in poverty. There was also the high life of embassies and functions which didn’t sit comfortably with Pat who has always championed those without a voice. After six years Maurice was transferred to the company’s plant in Lille, France where she still lives. When they took up residence in Lille, the couple realised that English-speaking people needed a centre to meet and make contact. Many of them were from Ireland, many working in textiles, linen and engineering. They found a former Anglican Church in the city and there they opened the British Community Association which, despite the name, attracted men and women from countries around the world, all having one thing in common, their first language being English. The church too began to thrive and in recognition of her work with her husband, Patricia became British Consul and the bishop’s lay assistant. She plays host to thousands who come every year to visit the war graves. Through her work with the veterans she became involved with the Westhoeck, Belguim’s soldiers, seamen, airmen and members of the resistance and also with the Belgium Prisoner of War Association, the national federation of Belgium war volunteers, who incidentally trained in Carrickfergus during the Second World War. As a thank you for her work with these ex-servicemen she received a prestigious honour in 2004.

‘It has pleased His Majesty Albert 11, King of the Belgians in recognition of outstanding services to the country, to award the insignia of Knight of the Order of Leopold 11 to our Member of the British nationality, Dame Patricia McBride-Windsor MBE.’

Her award was presented in Brussels in the presence of Queen Paola of the Belgians and the Belgium veterans sang their ‘regimental’ song – When Irish Eyes are Smiling. Such was the emotion and their love of this modest woman from Carrick that the tears of remembrance caught up with them and they couldn’t finish. So guests, including the Queen, joined in. Widowed in 2000 and now remarried, her husband Peter Hawkins has the same deep commitment to her work especially with the Commonwealth War Graves in Ypres.  It was such a pleasure to sit round the table earlier today and talk and talk.  And watch Ireland scalping England!

“It’s estimated that 1 in 4 adults experience at least one diagnosable mental health problem every year so it’s vital that mental health practitioners receive the 21st century training required to successfully support their clients in their journey from recovery to discovery.”

So says MindWise, a local mental health charity that offers 30 services, has 110 staff and over 100 volunteers supporting around 1000 people every day, people who have identified mental health needs to achieve fulfilled lives, to realise their dreams and find happiness in their daily living. There are practical ways of helping, such as addressing housing needs, day centres with various creative activities form an important part of the service; there people can make friends, talk in a relaxed atmosphere and follow interesting hobbies, art and filming making is popular; all of these help with clinical depression and encouragement and support is important when someone is wishing to go back into employment. Indeed there are many areas where help is offered and obviously, many people take MindWise up on their offer. Typical is the young man with a bi-polar diagnosis who, when asked: ‘What is your dream?’ he said his dad wanted him to get a job, his mum said he couldn’t cope, his girlfriend wanted him to get a flat and his key worker advised he should take it easy or he’d end up in hospital. All he wanted was to draw and paint, to go to art college and eventually be an artist. Thanks to MindWise he was given a creative space where he was able to work, he went to college, completed an undergraduate and master’s degree and is now a commercial artist. He’s in a relationship and is a proud father, leading a life in the absence or presence of an illness. Success, especially as he knows MindWise is there for him should he need support in the future. Over the 42 years of its existence this organisation has always monitored itself, looking at their support network and inviting members of the public to come forward and volunteer. One area that is new to the charity is coaching, a phenomena which is sweeping the world, we all need it and we all use it from schooldays to old age. MindWise coaching courses were piloted last year when, with the internationally accredited life and executive coaching firm Kingston College, they designed, developed and delivered a Mental Health and Wellbeing coaching qualification framework, advanced diploma level 6, accredited by the European Mentoring and Coaching Council. The exercise was a success with 11 people graduating after the six month course. The next intake of hopeful students will be at the end of March. One of the graduates of the Advanced Diploma in Mental Health and Wellbeing Coaching: From Recovery to Discovery is Eleanor Jordan. Eleanor worked with the street children of London before coming back to Belfast where she established a women’s centre in South Belfast. “As a co-founder of Windsor Women’s Centre 25 years ago, and chair of Belfast Sure Start, I want to know how to demystify the issues surrounding mental health and help empower women to take control and be part of their own mental health plan. I have implemented the principles of the programme with our staff team who work under incredible pressure to safeguard their mental health and wellbeing. In day to day practice it’s a demonstration of my belief that any individual has their own solution, but that they might just need to work with someone to reach their goals.” The type of situation she and others might face is illustrated in this story. “I lived alone and found it hard to look after myself and the flat. I was depressed, a heavy smoker and drinking heavily at the time and local people took advantage of that and used my flat as a drinking den. I began to hear voices telling me to do things I didn’t want to do. I became very confused and didn’t know what I was doing, that’s why I was admitted into Holywell hospital.” After a few years she was put in touch with MindWise and their housing service. “My life has changed for the better since coming to live in MindWise. I feel like things are coming on great except for a few wee health problems I have. I’m doing better mentally and I have a far better standard of accommodation and I am very proud of my wee room in the unit.” Now she has a structure to her week. She goes to the resource centre and she’s developing her daily living skills, laundry, and cooking, shopping and gardening. The majority of people can and do recover from periods of mental illness and many others learn to live with their symptoms and lead full lives.  Fundamental to recovery is social integration, education, training and employment and that’s where MindWise comes into the picture. It’s funded by the Department of Health, Children in Need and the Big Lottery and apart from offering quality services to help their clients in practical ways, they work to raise the profile of the charity and to get rid of the stigma surrounding mental illness. Helping 1000 people on a daily basis requires good organisation and plenty of help so the coaching course is important and will qualify new graduates to bring up-to-date skills to their work and impress on other volunteers the importance of quality service.     I am not known to you, however, I do know Pat.

    I am the late Alice Moran’s sister, Catherine., known in India as Cathy.

    Alice was a dear friend of Pat and Maurice when we lived on Angus Compound
    in India. Pat was pregnant with Tarun at the time and looking back, she must
    have been dreadfully homesick. Sigrid Scott, June Kirk, Pat and Alice had many
    coffee mornings together. We lived outside Calcutta, with the Grand Trunk
    Road one side and the magical River Hooghly on the other, where the residents
    walked in the cool of the evening, under the guard of the Ghurkas. Another world,
    a life-time away.

    Your Blog showing a photograph of Pat and learning that Maurice was no longer with her was emotional and I had a wee cry for the loss of such a gentle giant of a man.

    I was actually checking out how close Lille was to Brussels following yesterday’s attack, as my twin granddaughters are travelling there next week.

    One of my graddaughters, India, has been living in Tergnier since last autumn, where
    she is spending an academic year teaching English to primary school children. Her twin, Chloe regularly visit her in Amiens and Paris. This visit is to Lille, but the
    location may change depending on how the current situation develops in Brussels.

    On thinking about Pat, I thought about her boys. Alice had told me Tarun was a surgeon and I was surprised to find via the internet, that he is in Amiens where
    India trains with the Roller Derby Team. I never found out what Nicholas ended up
    doing.

    I am not sure if Pat is aware that Alice and Chic are no longer with us and I would be grateful if you could let her know of their passing and express my sorry at the family’s
    loss of Maurice.

    I would also like her to know how wonderful it is to know that she is now Dame
    Patricia and that she has met and married a lovely man. He would have to be
    lovely if Pat chose him!

    India is to leave France at the end of April and my husband Al, is going out to help
    her pack-up. He is also visiting the War Graves to find a relative who died in WW1.
    I will not be going, but Al would be delighted to have lunch or a coffee with Pat if
    dates are suitable and if she has the time or the inclination.

    I am so glad I found your Blog. I am not very techno-savvy and my family keep trying
    to get me to join Facebook, but it is not for me.

    Let Pat know I am 66 now and I met her when I was 14!!!

    I hope you are not offended at my request. Pat is one of the most gentle, kind,
    genuine and lovely people I have ever met.
