Even though they’ve been strimmed and hoed during the summer, somewhere underneath the cold ground something is stirring. I’ll tell you a story about snowdrops next Sunday.
Candy Devine sent me this very interesting and hopefully truthful newspaper report from Australia. In it researchers claim they may have found a possible key to a cure for peanut allergy. They say the Melbourne-based study of children given nut protein with probiotic has transformed the lives of 80% of those who took part in clinical trial.
The researchers focused on peanut allergy because it is usually lifelong and the most common cause of death from food anaphylaxis. This is part of the article:
The Melbourne-based study has already transformed the lives of many of the children who took part in the clinical trial. Researchers from the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute gave about 30 allergic children a daily dose of peanut protein together with a probiotic in an increasing amount over an 18-month period. The probiotic used in the study was Lactobacillus rhamnosus and the dose was equivalent to eating about 20kg of yoghurt each day. At the end of the trial 80% of the children could eat peanuts without any reaction.
“Many of the children and families believe it has changed their lives, they’re very happy, they feel relieved,” said the lead researcher, Mimi Tang. “These findings provide the first vital step towards developing a cure for peanut allergy and possibly other food allergies.” Almost three in every 100 Australian children have a peanut allergy. “We focused on peanut allergy because it is usually lifelong and it is the most common cause of death from food anaphylaxis,” Tang said.
Further research is now required to confirm whether patients can still tolerate peanuts in the years to come. “We will be conducting a follow-up study where we ask children to take peanut back out of their diet for eight weeks and test them if they’re tolerant after that.” Tang warned against trying the treatment at home. “Some families might be thinking about trialling this at home and we would strongly advise against this. In our trial some children did experience allergic reactions, sometimes serious reactions. “For the moment this treatment can only be taken under the supervision of doctors as part of a clinical trial.”
Interesting information and hopeful research, thanks Candy. I’d never recommend anything I read suggesting a cure, go to your doctor before you go to anyone else or try anything else, in my experience the medical profession are hard to beat for accuracy and they know your case best.
The concert last night (Saturday 31st January 15) at the Ulster Hall in Belfast was something else. Over 100 students from Princeton University, members of the university orchestra treated us to an enthralling concert. The graduates from America brought something special to their playing, they were fresh, vibrant and happy. They obviously delighted in the music, Dvorak’s Carnival Overture, Mahler’s Symphony No 4 and the most enchanting of all, Dan Trueman and Donnacha Dennehy and their Four Sean-nos Songs sung by the famed Larla O Lionaird. It was heartbreaking to listen to his voice sometimes low, sometimes soaring over the playing, the discordant notes mixing with the surging rhythms.
The night was to raise money for Concern Worldwide and Dominic McSorley the CEO of this highly respected organisation spoke movingly about the Ebola Crisis in West Africa. How there was at one time one doctor coping with 33,000 people. Can I have heard that correctly! Thanks to Concern Worldwide and other charities, progress is being made but the death and despair continue and Dominic and his staff are helping to slow down the spread of infection and save lives. We were given envelopes at the beginning of the concert and invited to support their work with a cash donation, the buckets were full at the end of a most moving evening.
Still in the world of theatrical beauty, when the Russian State Ballet of Serbia were in town a couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of talking to the technical director Vitaly Mikhailov. Although he doesn’t dance these days, Vitali’s job is to work quickly, know where everything and everyone goes, his advice is good for us all – don’t worry about problems, deal with them.

A little Co Down village is gearing up for a very special event in June; it’s been under wraps for quite a while but now the news is out, the Duchess of Richmond will be hosting a ball in honour of the Duke of Wellington. It’s known as the most famous ball in history and it’s being held in Strangford. The story goes back 200 years to the night of 15th June 1815 when the Duchess planned a huge celebration for over 600 guests, princes, generals and officers of Wellington’s army and their ladies. It was held in honour of her confident the Duke and, guess what, they will be at Old Court Strangford in June. The Duke is an interesting man.

Her daughter, Georgiana married a young soldier called William Lennox Lascelles Fitzgerald de Ros who through the premature death of his elder brother suddenly found themselves with an inheritance of a small estate in Ireland called The Manor of Strangford. William and Georgy set up home in Strangford and lived there for the rest of their lives and are both buried at Old Court Chapel. “The present owners, descendants of William and Georgy have recently developed a wedding venue on the premises and are planning to hold a ball on 13th June to raise money for charity amongst the entertainments there will be an auction of some small items which belonged to the Duke of Wellington or are connected to him.
An essence of the Duchess of Richmond’s Ball will be created to commemorate that fateful evening and raise monies for good causes including Dementia UK and Marie Curie. One hundred and thirty guests, dressed in the Regency style of the period will dine and dance and be entertained by musicians, harpists, singers and revel in a deft display of sword dancing by the Gordon Highlanders.”
