The majesty of a black sky and cloudless night with no light pollution is a wonder to behold. Stars and planets are awesome, you can just imagine there are more of these out there than grains of sand on the beach and that’s saying something. We were looking for shooting stars last Friday night and there was delight when ten year old Charlie spot one and made a wish! The thrill when Daniel fourteen spotted a satellite moving at speed across the sky looking south. But above all, literally, the Milky Way stole the show with Mars a close second – remarkable sight, we actually wondered if it was a bright orangey light from the full beam of a car coming over the mountain.

It’s a wonderful thing to introduce children to such a spectacle and to know from experience of other young members in the family, such a night will live in their minds forever. Only where you get away from cities and lights can you really appreciate the cosmos – and boy is it impressive. It makes you wonder why here on earth we can’t get it together. We can plan and work towards shooting rockets at the sun to gain information but we can’t come to terms with living with each other.
With the joys of a few days in Donegal all over, it’s home James and don’t spare the horses. I love these old sayings. My granny was full of them. Brought up in Co. Leitrim she mixed Irish with English and where ever ‘cileary’ came from I don’t know and can’t find out but when I was ‘full of kyoos’ and behaving like a mischievous child with a loving laugh she’d excuse it as I was in a cileary mood. We always ‘teemed’ the potatoes rather than draining them of water, friends and family have never heard the expression.
