It’s been a busy week, the wonderful Kite Runner at the Opera House on Monday night was a great start.   What a production, over but not forgotten and a stimulus to read the book.

Set in Afghanistan, the story is of two young men, friends from childhood although friendship wasn’t easy as they came from different backgrounds, Amir , a Pashtun living with Baba his widowed father in the grand mansion and Hassan, from the Hazara tradition, the son of Baba’s  servant who lives in a mud shack.  

The boys make a close knit team mainly through the competitive sport of kite flying, Amir flies them and Hassan is the runner who retrieves them at the end of the contest.  Although he’s not very bright he’s the best kite runner there is.  But times change from relatively peaceful and prosperous existence in the 1970s to the onset of war and the dreadful consequences.  Amir and Baba flee to America and it’s from there that the man looks back to his childhood, the relationship with Hassan, with his own father, with the bullying they experienced.  And he examines his guilt, his misguided loyalty which eventually destroyed Hassan’s life.

The staging is minimal, a tall wooden fence behind, two huge kites come down from the ceiling to indicate times and places and as we come into the auditorium there is a man sitting at the side of the stage beating out a hypnotic rhythm on classical Indian Tabla drums.  Hanif Khan remains on stage for the entire performance, the heartbeat of the story.  Tension is highlighted by Tibetan Singing Bowls, an unnerving single note when a wooden mallet is passed around the rim of the bowl. 

It’s been a long time since I experience such a compelling production, the audience was gripped, not a sound apart from one mobile phone as we embarked on Act  Two – will people never learn?  

The Grand Opera House is a bit like the curate’s egg, good in parts depending on your taste for theatre, however, this was pure theatre at it’s best.  People were weeping, people were entranced and people rose to their feet at the end.  The cast seemed as emotional as we were at the appreciation we showed this ultra talented company.

I’m sorry that these brilliant shows come here only for a few days, six days in this case was long and I hope the public made the journey to see such dedicated actors.  I came straight home and watched the film which to my mind had nothing on the stage play. Now for the book.

A Sporting Chance

One afternoon I sat down for a quick look at Royal Ascot as I had my eye on a certain horse which actually romped home at 66/1 – but in forth place!  I then sat flicking between racing, tennis and football!  I’ve been really caught up in the World Cup and  later this morning I’m going to make a pile of sandwiches and a nice cup of tea and settle to the England match at one o’clock!  I am also watching Love Island some nights – I know I’m sad but such escapism, stupid, trashy, rude and riveting.  My theory is these girls are winding the audience up, no one is that ill educated, also I’m reliably informed that someone holds up Cue Cards to give them things to say and ideas to follow.  The only thing is this going to bed with each other – not seemly for young people who might well think this is the norm.

Havelock House is a thing of the past.  Once it housed the most exciting television company in the UK, the envy of other bigger and more wealthy ITV  studios, we had enthusiasm, a ready audience, style and swagger and amazing guests from around the world.  Someday I’ll write a list of all those I came across from Louis Armstrong to Bing Crosby to the tiny missionary Gladys Aylwood to Ivy Bensons all girl band.  Bruce Forsyth, Adam Faith, Oliver Reed  I could go on and on.  All those ghosts will now be sold off to some buyer who will turn the old shirt factory into something ‘iconic’ but it will always be the fun factory to those who worked there.

There have been parties galore, friends from London, South of the border and North of the border, lots of air kissing, proper kissing, tears and laughter.  On Friday night in the Penthouse of the Europa two of our colleagues hosted a party big thank you to William and Mary, and Jackie Fullerton made the funniest speech, spontearous and touching as he closed the proceeding of that chapter of our working lives with style.

 

Now the company move to a glass building in stylish dockland.  May those who work there in the future enjoy it just as much as we have done and retain that family feeling which is s0 important.

Like so many people I was shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Hugh Dougal of O’Kane’s Funeral Directors in Belfast.  He conducted so many family funerals from all backgrounds and had very tragic situations to deal throughout our troubled times, yet to every one he gave his individual attention, overseeing every aspect.  The greatest compliment I can offer his memory is that, on their passing we entrusted both our Mum and Dad in to his care and at such a traumatic time he guided us with kindness and compassion.  He was thoughtful and at all times dignified as were his staff. It was a comfort to think that in the future he would be there but that’s not to be, however, without doubt he has passed his standards of care and friendship onto his son and daughter and the rest of his company.  Sadness within the company of course, a special boss and friend known as Daddy Hugh.   I offer sincere sympathies to his wife Frances and his family.

Field Of Dreams On Your Doorstep

Recently I heard about a couple in England who bought a farm and, because they had no time to spare, allowed a few acres to go wild.  When they got round to having a look at how to manage it they discovered that they’d a very special wildlife area filled with flowers, insects, nesting birds and animals, (in Donegal last month I saw not one rabbit, never happened before).   Those few acres became so unique that people started coming to visit and spend time communing with nature.  

Then, last week I met Sir Bob Salisbury, a retired professor from the world of academia in Nottingham who had lived in a 200 year old cottage with a modest garden.  In 2001 he and his wife Rosemary moved to County Tyrone to a 15 acre site where they planned to build a house.  But it was an ‘rural wasteland’ however, both keen gardeners, even before the house was built they set-too to transform the area into a haven for wildlife.  Now this is a thriving and renowned home for lapwings, hares, yellowhammers, otters, bats and a sweep of colourful wild flowers – a bees delight and a place now filled with bird song.  It reflected Rosemary’s childhood growing up on the same ground when it was owned by her father who sadly died due to a farming accident when she was only a child so obviously the project was special and important.   They approached the project ‘room by room’ with enthusiasm and little cash – as Bob says, nature helps the optimist!

Natures Soap Opera

“We had a room for woodland, for ponds, wild flower meadow, formal gardens, orchard, vegetables, self-sustaining and low maintenance where possible.”  He tried out the vegetable spot with a row of peas.  “The peas failed miserably, however the supporting willow sticks grew!”  So he knew the land was sympathetic to his wider plan.  “Our garden has become a soap opera to be viewed every  evening and morning, great story plots and amazing characters!”

Reader Houston Marshall reminds me of John Cushnie our local celebrity gardener who often appeared on Radio 4 Gardner’s Question Time.   Before he died in 2009, he told a story of a garden he’d been commissioned to design.  Houston reports:   “The European client wanted a traditional English cottage garden with roses around the door, herbaceous borders and trimmed lawn.  When he’d finished she contacted John saying she was very disappointed because she didn’t have the little white and yellow flowers that her neighbours had on their lawns.  He discovered she was talking about daisies and buttercups commenting that it was the first time he’d been asked to plant weeds!”

I certainly don’t considered the ‘day’s eye’ and the buttercup to be weeds, neither do Bob and Rosemary Salisbury.

Chris Packham, BBC Springwatch naturalist, believes we’re facing an ‘ecological apocalypse’ in our countryside, apparently in England primroses have virtually disappeared  from the hedgerows.  Butterfly conversationalist agree that we have a disastrous situation.  Chris maintains we are being given statistics which we’re ignoring;  “If we’re not careful and develop an interest in our own patch we’ll have to go to show gardens, please don’t make it like visiting an art gallery or a museum, that’s not the way to live.  We’re good at care but not at preventing disasters.”

They all agree it’s not beyond our grasp to do something about it.  Plant flowers and bushes that give foodstuff for birds, bees and butterflies, leave part of your garden open to the elements without strimming and decking, allow ‘weeds’ to flower and grow, encourage the birds, who knows you might even hear a cuckoo or see a live hedgehog one of these days.  But don’t plant too near the house, roots grow into drains with disastrous results.

Congratulations of Jannine Waddell MD of Waddell Media based in Holywood and to much loved chef, BBC’s Paula McIntyre on their MBE honours, two young women who have brought Northern Ireland to the eyes of people around the world.  And congratulations to Christine Bleakley Lampard on the news of her pregnancy so sadly over shadowed by the court case concerning the stalker who has made her life such a misery.  Hopefully this will be resolved soon and allow the couple to enjoy their baby’s arrival early in the autumn.

A wonderful blog Anne and such memories…Was on honeymoon in Isle of Man and went to see Ivy Benson at the Villa Marina, before the show we were to meet up with some new found friends in the bar…disaster I was stopped by the ‘bouncer’ (don’t think they were called that back in the day!) and asked my age…I was a young bride , 17…so I added on a few years, but, when asked what year I was born in I also added on instead of subtracting and we were refused entry!! I was never let forget this !! so thank you for the memories 🙂

    I want to pass along some very important news that everyone needs to hear!

    In December of 2017, Donald Trump made history by recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Why is this big news? Because by this the Jewish people of Israel are now able to press forward in bringing about the Third Temple prophesied in the Bible.

    Jewish Rabbis have publicly announced that their Messiah will be revealed in the coming years who will be a leader and spiritual guide to all nations, gathering all religions under the worship of one God.

    Biblical prophecy tells us that this Jewish Messiah who will take the stage will be the antichrist “who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God” (2 Thessalonians 2:4). For a time he will bring about a false peace, but “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (Matthew 24:15)…then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be” (Matthew 24:21).

    More importantly, the power that runs the world wants to put a RFID microchip in our body making us total slaves to them. This chip matches perfectly with the Mark of the Beast in the Bible, more specifically in Revelation 13:16-18:

    “He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

    Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.”

    Referring to the last days, this could only be speaking of a cashless society, which we have yet to see, but are heading towards. Otherwise, we could still buy or sell without the mark amongst others if physical money was still currency. This Mark couldn’t be spiritual because the word references two different physical locations. If it was spiritual it would just say in the forehead. RFID microchip implant technology will be the future of a one world cashless society containing digital currency. It will be implanted in the right-hand or the forehead, and we cannot buy or sell without it. Revelation 13:11-18 tells us that a false prophet will arise on the world scene doing miracles before men, deceiving them to receive this Mark. Do not be deceived! We must grow strong in Jesus. AT ALL COSTS, DO NOT TAKE IT!

    “Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name” (Revelation 14:9-11).

    People have been saying the end is coming for many years, but we needed two key things. One, the Third Temple, and two, the technology for a cashless society to fulfill the prophecy of the Mark of the Beast.

    We all know God exists. Why? Because without Him, we couldn’t prove anything at all. Do we live our lives as if we cannot know anything? No. So why is God necessary? In order to know anything for certain, you would have to know everything, or have revelation from somebody who does. Who is capable of knowing everything? God. So to know anything, you would have to be God, or know God.

    A worldview without God cannot account for the uniformity and intelligibility of nature. And why is it that we can even reason that God is the best explanation for this if there is no God? We are given reason to know or reject God, but never to know that He does not exist.

    It has been calculated by Roger Penrose that the odds of the initial conditions for the big bang to produce the universe that we see to be a number so big, that we could put a zero on every particle in the universe, and even that would not be enough to use every zero. What are the odds that God created the universe? Odds are no such thing. Who of you would gamble your life on one coin flip?

    Is there evidence that the Bible is the truth? Yes. Did you know that the creation accounts listed in the book of Genesis are not only all correct, but are also in the correct chronological order? That the Bible doesn’t say the Earth was formed in six 24-hour days but rather six long but finite periods of time? That the Bible makes 10 times more creation claims than all major “holy” books combined with no contradictions, while these other books have errors in them? The Bible stood alone by concurring with the big bang saying, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1); and says our universe is expanding, thousands of years before scientists discovered these things.     Jesus came to pay a debt that we could not; to be our legal justifier to reconcile us back to a Holy God; only if we are willing to receive Him: “For the wages of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23).

    God so loved the world that He gave us His only begotten son, so that whoever believes in Him, through faith, shall not perish, but have everlasting life. Jesus says if we wish to enter into life to keep the commands! The two greatest commands are to love God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind; and your neighbor as yourself. All the law hang on these commands. We must be born of and lead by the Holy Spirit, to be called children of God, to inherit the kingdom. If we are willing to humble ourselves in prayer to Jesus, to confess and forsake our sins, He is willing to give the Holy Spirit to those who keep asking of Him; giving us a new heart, leading us into all truth!

    Jesus came to free us from the bondage of sin. The everlasting fire was prepared for the devil and his angels due to disobedience to God’s law. If we do the same, what makes us any different than the devil? Jesus says unless we repent, we shall perish. For sin is the transgression of the law. We must walk in the Spirit so we may not fulfill the lusts of the flesh, being hatred, fornication, drunkenness and the like. Whoever practices such things will not inherit the kingdom (Galatians 5:16-26). If we sin, we may come before Jesus to ask for forgiveness (1 John 2:1-2). Evil thoughts are not sins, but rather temptations. It is not until these thoughts conceive and give birth by our own desires that they become sin (James 1:12-15). When we sin, we become in the likeness of the devil’s image, for he who sins is of the devil (1 John 3:8); but if we obey Jesus, in the image of God. For without holiness, we shall not see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14).

    The oldest religion in the world is holiness through faith (James 1:27). What religion did Adam and Eve follow before the fall? Jesus, Who became the last Adam, what religion does He follow? Is He not holy? He never told us to follow the rituals and traditions of man but to take up our cross and follow Him (Luke 9:23). There are many false doctrines being taught leading people astray. This is why we need the Holy Spirit for discernment. Unlike religion, holiness cannot be created. It is given to us from above by the baptism of the Spirit. Jesus is more than a religion; He is about having a personal relationship with the Father. Start by reading the Gospel of Matthew, to hear the words of God, to know His character and commandments. Follow and obey Jesus, for He is the way, the truth, and the life!
