I feel I’ve always known J.J Murphy, first of all when he was a continuity announcer in Ulster Television in those early days of the 70s when he read the news and his voice became so well known in homes throughout Northern Ireland – rich as dark chocolate and rich as honey.  I next met up with Jimmy in the Arts Theatre when I was looking after the press and publicity for the Ulster Actors Company where Roy Heayberd was artistic director.

He cast Jimmy as a menacing Herod in Rock Nativity, Manolakas in Zorba, Joxer Daly in Juno and the Paycock,  and many other roles,  a rare talent alongside Mark Mulholland, Bill Hunter, Hohn Hewitt, Margaret D’Arcy, J.G Devlin – how lucky I was.

Jimmy’s death came as a shock, it was sudden, he was in fine form filming for his role in Games of Thrones but at 86 his health wasn’t as good as it could be. Last Friday he took a heart attack and that beautiful voice was halted for ever. The man will live on in his films, Dracula Untold is due for release later this year, and his television roles and those who knew him will never forget.

We had many a conversation, about theatre and about faith, as the priest said the night before his funeral, he was a an active and valued member of his home parish of St. Brigid’s on Belfast Malone Road.  And he was a fighter for the rights of working people, especially those in theatre.  In 2008 , in an article for the Irish News, I reported on his attempt to get recognition for local theatre.

“The joy of the stage is so important that a number of theatre people marched on Stormont last Monday to impress on our politicians that theatre is a vital part of our life. When I talked to Barry McIlduff, Sinn Fein MLA and member of the Culture Arts and Leisure committee before the march, he made this offer “If Jimmy Murphy and representatives would like to come here at 2 p.m. on Thursday 17th January 2008 I’ll be there with some committee members and we’ll talk through his proposals.” You can’t say fairer than that. Jimmy will be telling them of his initiative based on the Scottish example where the National Theatre of Scotland is funded by and answerable to their local Executive. No expensive new building needed, rather funding support to tour established venues big and small including places never before visited. Using the best actors, directors and theatre companies they perform in existing buildings, village halls, schools, cathedrals, airports and established theatres. And with this support actors are paid around £500 a week instead of the average £375 and what’s more it works.”

It didn’t happen but wouldn’t it be fitting if such a theatre project was established in Jimmy’s name.  He worked hard enough for it.

The Festival, run with two partners by Belfast Man Johnny Shaw, always elegant and always the showman, is filled with interest and variety.  Author conversations, music, walks through the historic town of North Berwick, art exhibitions and lots of comedy.

But for me there was only one man in town – Paul Jones.  Remember Manfred Mann 1962 onwards?  Do Wah Diddy Diddy – Pretty Flamingo – The Mighty Quinn – Ha Ha Said the Clown – surely you must!  Well last Sunday 10th August 2014 I saw the Manfreds, a group of musicians celebrating 52 years of music, original and former members coming together in glorious harmony.   We had Mike Hugg, Tom McGuinness, Mike d’Abo, and relative newcomers to the band, Ron Townsend, Marcus Cliffe and Simon Currie.  And of course, the one and only Paul Jones, so handsome.  Be still my beating heart.

They performed for over two hours and it was special.  Earlier in the day Paul had sung a couple of numbers with the Glasgow Gospel Singers and that only whet the appetite.

If he and his band are going back to Fringe Festival by the Sea next year (word has it  he will) I will be there too and next time I’ll get to talk to him and take really good pics!
