What a treat last night, Shakespeare Live! From The RSC.   Some of the greatest dramatic scenes ever written, played by some of our greatest actors, as well as songs, comedy, dances and music all celebrating Shakespeare’s legacy. The show was directed by Gregory Doran and hosted by David Tennant and Catherine Tate.  But that doesn’t begin to describe what happened between 8.30 and 10 30 – music, classical and jazz ,  hip hop and the Birmingham Royal Ballet, comedy and song;  Alison Moyet, English National Opera and a breath-taking performance by Rufus Wainwright singing ‘When,in Disgrace with Fortune and Men’s Eyes’ – it was stunning.

 All the words were by the bard but as never presented in this way, think Al Murray and Horrible Histories!

All was nothing until our top Shakespearian actors came on stage to debate the emphasis when reciting ‘To Be or Not To Be, That is the Question.” Benedict Cumberbatch, Judi Dench Ian McKellen,

David Tennent and others asked:  Is it ‘to BE’ or is it ‘to be or NOT to be’, so it went on as seven or eight put their points and the poor actor who was supposed to make the speech didn’t know what he should be doing.  Then a figure appears,   back to camera, walks up the ramp onto the stage, arms outstretched telling the group they’d got it all wrong.  He turns round and there he was –  Prince Charles – who proceeded to upstage the whole lot telling them it should be ‘To Be or Not to Be – That is the QUESTION.’

The performance was live and not a foot was misplaced, a masterpiece that 400 years after his death, William Shakespeare would have been justly proud.

You wonder who is next.  Sadly Bruce Forsyth is very frail and the fact that he was unable to go along to Ronnie Corbetts funeral spoke volumes.  I wish him well because he is very special to me for a variety of reasons going back to my days in Ulster Television.

Television is now a sophisticated industry with immediate access to anywhere in the world but it started with basic equipment, an enthusiastic workforce and stimulating contributors. It was risky and irreverent and the element of surprise on live shows, as happened last night,  held the audience.

I asked Bruce Forsyth if he remembered the day he caused mayhem in Studio One at Ulster Television, “I remember a scooter I think, was it a scooter?” I told him it was the roller caption on wheels. “You see the mind is a marvellous thing,” he said, “it’s an encyclopedia but you need memory jogs don’t you? I left out a whole piece in my book, oh dear, I got the childhood and the RAF though.”

What a nice man, so generous with his time. I’d written to him asking for an interview for ‘Standby Studio’, the book I was writing about the early days of the studio and mentioning the day he visited Studio One.  I was sitting in the garden when my husband came to the back door and shouted that  I was wanted on the phone. I was enjoying the sun, a cup of tea and a bun as Alan came closer I asked who it was. “Bruce Forsyth.”  I calmly thanked Alan and took the phone. I have to admit my heart skipped a beat.

“Anne. Bruce Forsyth.” He omitted adding OBE awarded in 1998 for his outstanding work in the world of entertainment.

“Darling, I’ve just found your letter, I’ve been away, am I in time for your book?” The reply was obvious. “For you Bruce, I will hold the presses.” We got on well after that and had a couple of  lovely conversations in the days of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, a show he said he was thrilled to be working on. What a performer. Even into his 80s he was still showing the young ones who’d never even seen him perform at the London Palladium, what a graceful dancer he is.

Although some reports claimed that Sunday Night at the London Palladium was watched by as many as 28 million viewers, others say it was under 10 million. Which ever, it was one of the most viewed programmes and it attracted top artists. Such was the impact of the programme, a vicar in Surrey even brought forward the time of his Sunday evening service by half an hour so his congregation could get home in time.   And we saw the host’s energetic behaviour at first hand on that day when he came to visit Ulster Television.

By now I was a production assistant. This meant working with a director acting as his secretary, tea girl, timing programmes and calling camera shots on fast moving musical shows. Working from a script, it was a matter of shouting out which camera the director had pre-determined he’d select next – ‘coming to camera one, on one, standby three, coming to three, on three’ and on and on. ‘Roundabout’ was a panic most nights because it was a small studio, probably not much more than 30 yards square with up to ten items coming from this space during the teatime programme. This meant shifting people in and out of the scene dock doors, a musical group, lambs, half a dozen politicians, a model showing the latest creations, you name it and it was on Roundabout, a sort of ‘in town tonight’. This mixture, a variety show in itself, appealed to the audience and made this one of the most popular live programmes of all time.

It was into this mix that Bruce Forsyth arrived in 1961. I was on the programme that night, stopwatches primed, list of items, how much time for each and all added up to the second. Great. Forsyth was hilarious, Ivor Mills was in stitches and on the cue to windup the interview, Ivor made all efforts to shut the man up and say goodnight. Time was ticking but mayhem suddenly broke out as the funny man from the Palladium jumped on the caption roller used for the end credits and scootered round the studio with cameraman Alan Hailes in hot pursuit.

I don’t know how, but we somehow finished the show on time as he scooted out of the studio and round the building.

I never met Victoria Wood but I did see her in the Ulster Hall, she came on stage, nervous and shy and stood there in orange raincoat down to her ankles, yellow beret pulled down to her eyebrows and wringing her hands,   she was looking for her friend Kim-ber-ly – “Have you seen ‘er?” she asked.  I don’t remember much else because I was laughing so much it hurt.  She had boundless imagination and a gift for putting words together and accents to bring you to your knees.  But the television movie ‘That Day We Sang’ starring Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton showed off her serious writing and directing talents, the gentle story of a boy and a girl who sang in a choir then bump into each other  in adulthood only to fall in love. Raunchy in places, sad in others.   Victoria Wood was a perfect professional, a renaissance woman, a genius.

 

 

It’s Good To Talk
Everyone is into talking these days and thank goodness for it, who said jaw jaw not war war? So true in every way, at home, in the workplace and in the community at large, especially in the community at large.
The opening of a Death Cafe at the Pantry Crescent Arts Centre in Belfast on Sunday 10th April broke a lot of taboos, an international idea to allow people to talk about this subject and hopefully come to terms with their fears and doubts. Organisers, local writers Lucy Beevor and Therese Kieran, were pleased that 50 people came to debate a variety of topics ranging from what they deemed a ‘good’ death to reflecting on life as it is now whilst a number of personal stories opened up the discussion.  More such meetings are being planned for   the future.

Keep Talking
Maria McManus has also established a talking shop, this time in the Oak Lounge of the Errigle Inn, Belfast. “A ‘seisún’ with a difference,” says the writer, “No music, no television, no singing, just sharing stories, yarns and poems in the oral tradition of Ireland.”

In a setting of oak panels, Lloyd Loom furniture and stained glass, the haunt of the late James Ellis and George Best’s father Dickie, this Ormeau Road bar is no stranger to actors and writers and now storytellers.
“You never know where the stories will take us,” Maria explains, “We’ve spent time talking about rogues and blackguards, skullduggery and fly-by-nights. We’ve talked about travel, war and rebellion. It can go anywhere. The stories often evoke old Belfast, things I never knew about, such as drinking dens, the emergency plans, prison ships, workhouses and local characters. People can relax and eat some lunch, and either listen or chip in.”
The Talk for Talk’s Sake Sessions are on Thursday afternoons, from 2.00pm to 3.30 pm. Everyone is welcome.

So with an invitation like that I went along last Thursday.  Such a beautiful day people were sitting outside having lunch and supping their beer so we were only four in the Oak Lounge but the crack was great and roamed round all sorts of subjects from hospitals and nursing to shipyards and football, and football, and more football but it was a laugh a minute and I enjoyed it.  
By the way, the Jaw Jaw quotation came from Sir Winston Churchill during a 1954 luncheon speech in the White House.

So another week flits by with all it’s happiness and sadness.  Lovely warm sunny days and cold bleak wet days, life is full of unexpected turns, I hope yours will be pleasant until we meet again.
