Looking Back

 

Easter Tuesday 1941 fell on 15th April, 75 years almost to the day.  There was excitement in Belfast, the Ulster Hall was playing host to one of the most popular singers in Ireland but little did the people crowding into the Hall that night realise that Delia Murphy would be instrumental in saving their lives.
The build up to the Céilí Mór was massive, posters everywhere especially around West Belfast. The Johnston School of Irish Dancing would draw parents and relations, David Curry’s Irish Rhythms Orchestra would attract the dancers but It was Ireland’s Queen of Song they wanted, the great Delia Murphy, wife of Dr. Tom Kiernan, director of programmes at Radio Eireann, then Minister Plenipotentiary to the Holy See at the Vatican and later Irish Ambassador to Australia, Canada, ironically Germany, and the United States.
St. Malachy’s GAA club had booked the hall and were confident it would be a great success and swell their funds. But there was unease in the city. Earlier in the month German bombers had carried out attacks on the docks and the shipyard. Could it happen again? Shortly before Delia stepped on stage the drone of German bombers was heard on the outskirts of the city.
Gerry Hobbs was a member of St. Gall’s Boys School choir who were guest artists that night. When I talked to him a few years ago for an article in the Irish News he remembered that they had just performed and were mixing with the audience, almost 1200 eager people all waiting for the great lady to appear.

‘It was then that we heard the shocking announcement that Belfast was being hit by an air raid and it was advisable not to leave the hall. Everyone was so nervous and uncertain as just what to do and expecting the roof to cave in at any time.’
It was Easter holidays and two young Belfast men, Leo Wilson from Andersonstown and his mate Harry Kavanagh had arrived just before 8 o’clock, payed their half crown and made their way through the crowds to a good vantage point. Even the balcony which extended round the hall was full with Deila fans.

‘Harry and I took to the floor every time a dance was called as we waited for Deila.” Leo recalled.  “We became friendly with a young man who was a fire watcher and it was the first time he’d seen Irish dancing. About 10.15 Delia Murphy appeared to a great roar of applause and for the next 30 minutes or so she sang some of her best know songs.
‘Suddenly we heard a lot of noise coming from the main entrance so Harry and I went to find out what was happening. To our surprise there were soldiers with rifles telling the crowd to go back into the main hall. An air raid warden made straight for the stage, called for silence and when the crowd calmed down he told us that German planes had been bombing the shipyard and the aircraft factory.

‘He told us that no one would be allowed to leave except those who were members of the ARP (Air Raid Precaution), nurses, First Aid workers or trained medical personnel.’
On stage Delia Murphy called to everyone to be calm and she began to sing. Ballad after balled filled the air and when she stopped she told the band to strike up and the dancers to take the floor. Leo remembers the Johnston Dancers giving at least three exhibition dances.

‘Then our friend the Fire Watcher asked if we wanted to view the city from the roof top, of course we accepted and in a few minutes we found ourselves in the front line. The scene was one of absolute horror. It was, as someone said, like a vision of Dante’s Inferno. The entire city seemed to be in flames.  Overhead we could hear, then see 200 German planes as they swooped down on the undefended city, unloading HE (high explosive) bombs, not only did we see the explosions but we watched in horror as buildings burst and debris was sent skywards.’

They watched as the planes turned as if they were going away but within minutes they came back and began unloading more fire bombs, flames leapt and soon both side of Belfast Lough were blazing. The friends turned to the West where they lived.
‘Our first view was of the Twin Spires of St. Peters Pro-Cathedral on the Falls Road, they were outlined against a background of flames and smoke. We were both convinced that the Divis Street-Falls Road area had escaped destruction. This we found to be the case when we got home. Unfortunately an air raid shelter in Percy Street got a direct hit. This was on the other side of Divis Street, 30 people died. In Cavendish Street six houses were destroyed when a stick of incendiary bombs was jettisoned. As we made our way back to the main hall, no one spoke. We told no one of what we’d seen, it would have caused a panic.’

Meanwhile Delia went on singing as if nothing out of the ordinary was taking place. Then David Curry would strike up the orchestra fully aware that the music and dancing would help to keep the sound of the planes overhead blocked out.
‘If ever a woman deserved to be commended for courage, good example and a steadying influence on such a huge audience of young people, that woman was Delia Murphy. Over the years I’ve seen programmes, listened to radio discussions and read numerous articles about the Easter air raid. I did not see, hear or read even one mention of her name. Neither was she given one word of praise or credit. The old motto, the show must go on was never better upheld than it was by Delia Murphy on Easter Tuesday night April  1941.’
Gerry Hobbs also recalled Delia Murphy taking over.
‘She entertained the crowd for four hours, The Spinning Wheel, If I Were a Blackbird, Moonlight in Mayo, The Star of the County Down, all the popular songs of the day. Nowadays whenever I hear the name Delia Murphy I do always think of the Ulster Hall Céilí and that night to remember.’
Madeline Sowrey’s sister was in the Ulster Hall audience too and Madeline remembered how worried her mother was. Two other sisters were at a dance in the local hall in Old Park when there was a direct hit in the street; a wake was going on in the house and the coffin and the corpse were found the next day in the school grounds. To the north of the city, destruction was dreadful and many lives were lost and property destroyed; in the eery stillness next morning, people walking over the rubble could hear the clocks chime below their feet.
John Campbell was five that Easter of 1941, his father was on fire watching duties. When the alarm was raised, instead of going into the shelter outside their home, his mother took the family round to his granny in the next street where they spent five hours in the air raid shelter as bombs rained down.

‘The shelter outside our house suffered a direct hit and everyone was killed.’ He paints a vivid picture. ‘I remember a man wearing a shirt with no collar, a cigarette sticking out of his face, throwing what I thought were rags of clothes into the corner but it was bits of bodies.‘
Elsewhere as bombs and incendiaries fell for four long hours, there was a report of an Alsatian dog running away with a dead baby in its mouth, thankfully rescued and left with the soilders with a note, ‘body found on York Street’. The people were united in grief, bodies were buried in Milltown Cemetery and the City Cemetery, no one knew their denomination and it didn’t really matter. Fire brigades came from the Republic to the north to help fight the raging flames and, like Deila, that guesture was never forgotten after a weekend when almost 1000 people were killed and 100.000 left homeless.

During the Grand Prix broadcast came the news headlines and the awful events in Ecuador with a rising death toll following the earthquake.  They say there is no connection between this quake and the quakes in south Japan where a quarter of a million people have been evacuated from their homes as the search goes on for survivors but you’ve got to wonder.

The two stories mix very unpleasantly when you drift off to sleep for a few minutes and dream you’re racing a car through a wrecked city trying to find people still alive.

This month a special exhibition opens in the Town Hall Civic Centre Carrickfergus, the painstaking work of a local woman who now lives in France. Two years ago Patricia Hawkins-Windsor and her husband Peter embarked on a mission to remember those young men from her home town who lost their lives during World War 1. An emotional journey where they visited the war graves to photograph and recorded those of Carrickfergus men. Towards the end of their dedicated project, in January and quite by chance, they came across the very spot the famous Christmas Truce took place. “It’s quite near the Ireland Peace Tower and Messines Ridge where thousands of Northern Ireland boys were killed.    Like many of our visits, the wind, rain, mud and snow were unbelievable that day and I wonder what it must have been like for those young soldiers.”

She wrote to me about her venture.
“It is sobering to think that this homage to our Carrickfergus Boys lying in Flanders Fields has been inspired by one quiet moment in my life. As an eight-year-old child  walking in Legg Park with my  father Eric M. Windsor; he explained to me the reason for the Memorial there to Charles Legg who enlisted in 1915 when he was 22 year of age and died in 1918 as the result of a serious injury when riding on the field of battle in Bavinchove Northern France.”
After her marriage in the early 60s to Maurice McBride, a ‘Mackies’ man, they sailed to India to settle in Calcutta where she worked with the British High Commission during the week and with Mother Theresa on Saturdays.
When Maurice was moved to France to look after the Benelux Countries and North Africa, they, and their two young sons, lived in Lille near the Belgian Border. “On Sundays we got to know the countryside around us and found that the town of Ypres in Belgium wasn’t too far away.  We also joined St. George’s Memorial Church built in the centre of Lille in memory of loved ones lost in the First World War.  I was invited to be its Licensed Lay Assistant taking part in many special events which included meeting Her Majesty The Queen and interviewing the last World War One veteran – Harry Patch aged 104 – on his final visit to Toc.H in Poperinghe.  I also established a long friendship with Earl Haig’s  son.”
Her interest in the 1914-1918 war deepened.
“On three unforgettable occasions I said the graveside prayers during the burials in Ypres of fifty  First World War soldiers – only  “Known onto God” – it still haunts me to this day wondering if one of them could have been my own great-great uncle who lost his life in Passchendaele.”
Today she is vice-chairman of St. George’s and recently attended the thirty-thousandth rendering of The Last Post which is sounded every evening at 8p.m at the Menin Gate in Ypres.  The traffic stops and the bugles sound.

In recognition of her work through the years, Patricia became British Consul and the bishop’s lay assistant playing host to thousands who come every year to visit the war graves. Through her dedication to the veterans she became involved with the Westhoeck, Belguim’s soldiers, seamen, airmen and members of the resistance and with the Belgium Prisoner of War Association, the national federation of Belgium war volunteers who incidentally trained in Carrickfergus during the Second World War. In 2004 in gratitude for this work she received a prestigious honour from His Majesty Albert 11, King of the Belgians who in recognition of outstanding services to the country award her the insignia of Knight of the Order of Leopold 11and she became Dame Patricia McBride-Windsor MBE.
“In 2014 I mentioned to my husband Peter (we both having been widowed), that, as we lived in Flanders Fields, why not try to visit as many of the huge number of graves of the Carrick Boys who had never returned and to pay respect and homage to those resting places on behalf of their loved ones who had never been able to do so themselves.”
So began their search – Flanders Fields, the Ypres Salient, Passchendaele and The Somme and Gallipoli. Having then contacted the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in Ypres, they visited Carrick churches and sailing club checking over lists with their Rolls of Honour.
She writes that she was always very aware of what they were doing – so many graves and memorial panels commemorating the Carrick men’s resting places which were perhaps being visited for the first time – buried in “a Foreign Field”. “During each visit I said The Lord’s Prayer, and often ‘spoke’ to the boys about home.  It was very emotional. I happened once, in December, to find a single primrose on a Carrick lad’s grave in Belgium with no other flowers in sight – it was as if he was expecting me.  Another special moment came in Loos when I noted that it was 100 years to the day when the twenty-year-old buried there had been killed.   Also in Loos we found one young Carrick soldier buried alongside Rudyard Kipling’s son and a most poignant moment was finding two local lads graves  side-by-side.  Always I laid British Legion Cross on each grave and memorial panel – each bearing the Carrickfergus Coat of Arms and the inscription ‘In Grateful Remembrance from The Citizens of Carrickfergus’.  We always visited the cemeteries mid-week and strangely enough never saw any visitors there just the gardeners.”
In one cemetery in The Somme on the road to Doullens, while visiting Samuel Kane’s Grave, the couple walked a little further and discovered Lieutenant Lionel Lupton’s grave, the great-great-great uncle of The Duchess of Cambridge, Baroness of Carrickfergus.

Whizzing Brilliant

Many thanks to my daughter Susie who introduced me to the mysteries of juicing!  Every morning now I get out my bananas, strawberries, one pear, sometimes apples always blue berries, a squeeze of honey, a shake of cinnamon and lots of unsweetened almond milk.  The whizz reduces the whole lot to a wonderful colourful mush and a drink of that keeps me going until lunchtime.  Gone are  breakfasts of lots of brown bread and as a result  I’m feeling really good.

I am a novice with the mixture and investigating other ingredients and it’s all very exciting and already the pounds are dissolving – I think!
