We may well have been more than disappointed with the weather last summer but it didn’t effect us half as much as it did the Small Copper, a beautiful little butterfly and if you kept your eyes peeled you just might have spotted one in the garden, at least you might have at one time because the species has fallen in numbers by a quarter during 2015 and this is so sad.
I can’t imagine life without butterflies, my favourite is the Peacock but each one is beautiful and each one unique and because of a loss of natural habitat, the use of pesticides and poor weather, these little creatures are in danger of disappearing. Different species of butterflies have different preferences when it comes to plants so if you want to support them, leave an area in the garden to grow wild and you’ll be surprised how many different insects will prosper.
You don’t really need a special garden to attract butterflies. If there are plants in your garden that appeal to them, butterflies will find them so let the nettles flourish and the buddleia bloom. Apparently a butterfly garden should not only be filled with bright flowers offering a succulent menu of nectar but also bushes and shaded parts in the garden to afford a place for them to hibernate and lay eggs.
Basically, butterflies start life as eggs laid on plants. These then hatch into tiny caterpillars which start eating immediately. First they eat their egg shell and then they begin feeding on their host plant. Eventually they change into a chrysalis from which the adult butterfly will eventually emerge and fly off in search of food.
But don’t make my word for it. This is a miraculous part of evolution and well worth
