I’d already watched the film ‘Quartet’ twice but it hooked me in again last night.  What a delightful production and proves you can pack a cast with icons and enjoy a top drawer result especially  Billy Connelly looking well and obviously relishing in his racy role.  Tonight it’s ‘Indian Summer’ which is another beautiful example of the film makers art, not only colourful but a great way to learn history.

Just in case you think it’s a man’s world here’s news of an all female initiative, the only known one of its kind in the British Isles.

The Hens’ Shed is located on Main Street Richhill Co. Armagh. As a nod to the Mens’ Shed organisation where men meet and socialise, the Hens are also involved in craft work – plate decorating, crochet, sewing, glass decoration and paper art to name but a few; eventually they want to establish an enterprise to sell the products they make. Although open all week, they meet together every Wednesday afternoon to take advantage of the well-being room for massage, reflexology, salt therapy and nail art. There’s a healthy connection between the two Sheds, the women paint and decorate for the men, the men create wooden pieces such as tables and benches for the ladies.

Manager Shirley Agnew explained that the project is designed to help women experiencing mental health issues, a lack of confidence or low self-esteem especially after The Troubles. One woman admits there was a time when she wouldn’t come out of the house and had active suicidal thoughts; she firmly believes the Hens’ Shed has saved her life and like others, enjoys the company and learning new skills. “The craics great,” says Shirley, “you should hear the cackles of us, just like a hen house!” Probably a few chocolate eggs on the go this week!
These busy bees approached the Housing Executive, Santander’s Community Plus and the Spark Award resulting in funding of £4.500 for equipment, so the Shed is thriving and hopefully will be the first of many.

I was taken to task after printing a nursery rhyme updating ‘Jack and Jill’ to a modern version mentioning diabetes in a jocular way. The letter I received was from the mother of a teenager who has had Type 1 diabetes since the age of five.  Her mother  writes:
“You might be unaware but Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease which is irreversible, chronic and at times can be life threatening.  She has a lifetime of checking bloods, injecting insulin and treating hypos and high blood sugars and dealing with any complications that arise from this dreadful disease.”
The girl was upset and her mother asks that I point out that ‘Jill’ in the nursery rhyme was suffering the more common Type 2 diabetes which can arise from a poor diet.  EastEnders also came under criticism recently when Kim was preparing for her daughter’s birthday saying: “If the kids don’t give themselves diabetes, it’s not a good party, is it?”

What is the difference?

People with TYPE 1 diabetes will need insulin injections for the rest of their lives.  It means monitoring blood glucose levels, a healthy diet, regular exercise and regular blood tests.
People with TYPE 2 diabetes may be controlled through a healthy diet, exercising and monitoring blood glucose levels but there may also be a need for medication in the form of tablets, injectable medications and also insulin injections.

The scene is set, a large and tidy kitchen in a big house, bells on the wall, willow pattern plates on the shelves. A young woman is cooking kidney and toast for the man she is almost engaged to and might one day marry. It’s late Saturday night, he has returned from his chauffeur duties for the master of the house, a man who demands and gets his lackey’s full attention. The two listen to the party in full swing outside in the garden; music spills into the kitchen, there are squeals of delight and laughter as revellers celebrate the end of World War 11.
Patrick Marber’s version of Strindberg’s play Miss Julie, a story of class and passion, is directed by Emma Jordan and set on a country estate in Co. Fermanagh.
As a convincing no nonsense housemaid Christine (Pauline Hutton) prepares to go off to bed their servant’s territory is invaded by the daughter of the house, Miss Julie (Lisa Dwyer Hogg) who sweeps in looking for love, or lust, or dominance over the man she knows has always fancied her. With Christine out of the way, she plays games with John (Ciaran McMeniman) she’s coquettish, leads him on and he responds.

He plays out the fantasies he’s had since he was 12 and takes her virginity. What they don’t know is that Christine has gone to his room and stood watching the awful events of the night and is devastated by her betrayal. Miss Julie is giddy, unhinged perhaps and agrees to run away with John. But where will the money come from? Another problem is her caged singing bird, she can’t take it with her so she invites John to get rid of it.  For me there isn’t enough light and shade in the acting, the very graphic sex scenes lack a certain tension but having said that the audience were gripped by the dark and troubling story line and the actors deserved the  standing ovation at the end.  I recommend you go and see this play, no interval and unreserved seating.
