Watched Strictly Come Dancing last night – Tess Daly never stops talking about ‘luv’ and the ‘juges’
and Claudia Winkleman thinks she’s a naughty child and for me their love in it doesn’t work. Some say Anton de Beke should replace Bruce Forsythe, some think Len Goodman but I think someone fresh, masculine with experience of fronting programmes rather than a job for the boys. And those judges! Does anyone like the way they prance in doing their pantomime twists and turns – and don’t tell me Len had a total knee replacement operation a few weeks ago. I had one at the same time and I can assure you I’m not likely to prance anywhere for some time to come. Maybe he’s bionic. Maybe he’s fitter than me!
But it’s all about the dancing which is now repeditive as obviously the non-professionals have to learn steps in a short time. For me the highlight is the music, the band and the singers are great and the costumes superb.
Then switch over to X-Factor – being housebound on a Saturday night is rotten! Three young people catapulted to fame last night and loving it. So far so good. Only thing is they are hard to listen to. The rappers are impossible to understand but were voted through to the final tonight, the young man wobbled up and down the scales and was ousted from the competition, and the girl, Louisa who also remains, is good but a bit screechy. I hope she wins, she’s lovely, fresh and modest and hopefully fame and fortune won’t spoil her.
And then we have the ‘guests’. Everyone of them has a new CD or album on the market which is mentioned each time, Rod Stewart could hardly be bothered and hardly took young Che under his notice when they were singing together. I’m a fan of Stewart and I enjoyed his interview on Saturday morning Radio Five Live with Danny Baker, the pair were interested in each other and their opinions and their backgrounds. Having said all that, I suppose I’ll be a couch potato again tonight, tutting and criticising and enjoying!

The play Over the Bridge was written by Sam Thompson, it was at the press conference to introduce Ellis as the newly appointed artistic director of the Group Thompson spoke of the forthcoming play in some detail so alerting the chairman of the theatre, Richie McKee to the controversial nature of the paly. So the cat and mouse game began.
McKee wanted to read the script, so sadly there were no extra copies as each actor guarded theirs with their lives. It mattered not. McKee, one of Ulster’s elite, suspected Thompson’s play of being ‘subversive’. Strangely a script went missing and on the afternoon of the first rehearsal McKee summoned Ellis and actor’s union rep Maurice O’Callaghan to a meeting.

The outcome was predictable. The chairman of the board wanted sections of the play removed, even one major character was under threat, he criticised the language and claimed the play ‘could lead to civil unrest and even rioting … full of grossly vicious phrases and situations which would undoubtedly offend and affront every section of the public’ and stating ‘It is the policy of the directors of the Ulster Group Theatre to keep political and religious controversies off our stage.’ His board fell in behind him although they wouldn’t have had time to read the script for themselves, and the production was cancelled.
The drama behind the scenes is documented in this throughly enjoyable book, the blatant censorship was appalling yet you’ve only to think back to Newtownabbey Borough Council’s artistic board and their failed attempt to ban The Reduced Shakespeare production of The Bible: The Complete Word Of God (Abridged).
The story of Over The Bridge is a tale of two cultures, the raw passion of the shipyard and the men and women who believed the play had to be produced and the city fathers who just couldn’t understand that men like Peter O’Boyle and Davy Mitchell existed let alone what they stood for.
What happened after that board meeting? Ellis and many of the actors resigned from the Group and started their own company. What happened the to play? It was a huge success and to this day is being performed.

Rowel’s father Jeremy tells me that if this happens, the school of music will give him a full scholarship of some £30,000 a year.
Juggling his education with his music commitments provides a full diary. He has pipe organ studies with his newly acquired Down, Dromore and Connor Organ Scholarship, school exams looming and he’ll be taking his piano practical which is the final grade exam in the ABRSM syllabus. At the same time he’s working toward his DipLCM & ACTL on completion of this Grade 8 examination. Last week on the 10th December Rowel performed in the Great Hall in Assembly Buildings Stormont for the Assisi Animal Sanctuary’s Musical Evening sponsored by MLA Stephen Agnew. Whether it’s playing for the vice-principal of his school on his retirement, donning tails for a wedding performance or picking up a distinction in his violin exams, it might be studying guitar, there seem to be no limits.

The opening paragraph hooks the reader: ‘A silvery cartwheel of plump harvest moons ago, in the large mossy space between a tick and a tock, there lived a farmer called Man Donaghy. He was one of the Big People, all black-haired and broad and handsome-strong, with the dark, urgent eyes of a hungry dog.’ Beautiful and evocative. He and Wife Donaghy ached for a child without success so he became cold and cruel towards her and went looking for a younger replacement. And what of his wife? He offered her to the Little People who lived hidden beneath the Faerie Thorn. What happened next is a lesson to men like Man Donaghy who became ‘deep-ditch desperate’ as the ghastly trolls transform him into a bone-ghost while the first Wife Donaghy thrived.
Only last year Jane took a notion to learn about tree lore. Originally from Wiltshire, she fell in love with a man from Northern Ireland and moved to live on his farm and there found a faerie thorn. Although not a believer in the little people, she visited the tree morning and evening and after an early twilight visit she went back to bed for a while. “And when I woke up I was astonished to find that a fully formed story about the faerie thorn was in my head.” And so began her adventure around the North Antrim coast discovering and researching hidden stories. “One year on I have a sense that I’m living in a place that is full of stories waiting to be told. I feel at home – and I may actually believe in faeries too.” I think she might because once her book was finished she took an offering of Bushmills whiskey and cream for the underground dwellers: “They took the whiskey and left the cream!”
