SUNDAY BLOG: SOME THINGS CHANGE AND SOME THINGS WILL REMAIN FOREVER THE SAME

First it was hymns being mucked around with, Jehovah is a non word in some places apparently, and now it’s the Lord’s Prayer. According to reports the ‘Our Father’ prayer is set to change because Pope Francis reckons some of the words give the impression God pushes people towards sin. Instead of saying, ‘Lead us not into temptation’, Catholics will say, ‘Do not let us fall into temptation.’ He stated his belief that the English translation of the prayer was not correct.

The new wording was approved by the general assembly of the Episcopal Conference of Italy last month. The third edition of the Messale Romano, the liturgical book that contains the guiding texts for mass in the Roman Catholic church, will feature an updated version of the prayer.

The prayer has been a bone of contention for Pope Francis for a number of  years, having said in 2017 that he believed the wording to be problematic.

“A father doesn’t do that; a father helps you to get up immediately. It’s Satan who leads us into temptation – that’s his department.”’

“It is not a good translation because it speaks of a God who induces temptation,” he told Italian TV. “I am the one who falls. It’s not him pushing me into temptation to then see how I have fallen.

I do know that in some schools in England the Lord’s Prayer is no longer included in assemblies because it’s thought that the words would frighten children into thinking their own father has died and is in heaven. How did my generation survive and remain so grounded!

75 Years And The Emotions Are The Same And Always Will Be

The D Day commemorations were very moving, even Donald Trump was suitably sobered and seemed overwhelmed with the enormity of the two days, of the precision of the ceremonies, the dignity of the Queen and above all the attitude of the veterans. The television coverage was extraordinary and as usual, when it comes down to it, the BBC have the knack of perfection.

Music Bring People Of All Ages Together

Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland.

“The Peace Choir began in 2004 with 300 children, this year there were 4.000 mostly P4 to P7, in their white shirts and black trousers, an amazing sight.  They were brilliant, happy, exuberant and enthusiastic spurred on by the brilliant conductor Greg Beardsell and the Youth Orchestra.”

The Peace Proms include a free choral project for primary schools and as Margaret and her granddaughter found, the music programme with the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland  is tailored to ensure it’s fun and the end performance is an inspirational experience for choirs, teachers, parents and audiences alike!  Importantly the proms celebrate culture and diversity and promote peace, unity and tolerance as only music can do.

Peace Proms give a once in a lifetime opportunity to sing with a choir of up to 3,000 children and perform with a full symphony youth orchestra.  Have a look at peaceproms.com and go to About CBOI and hear hundreds of excited children sing Ireland’s Call, it will bring a tear to your eye.

Schools are gearing up to perform with the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland and a host of top soloists in one concert which will take place in Spring 2020

So the guess work is in full swing – who will be the next Prime Minister? All this talk about drugs makes interesting reading, no one seems to think it’s worth outing Boris for his misdemeanours and his weird attitude to the rights and wrongs of life. I saw a wonderfully engineered pic of him and Donald Trump kissing – yuck but it was like a mirror image. Watch this space.

Old Habits Die Hard!

DONAL AND GLORIA

Forget the demure tea dance and join the happiness of dressing up, putting on the style, having a glass of wine and dancing, this is what Engage with Age are offering. This charity in East and South Belfast working with older people’s groups, has listened to these ‘re-cycled youths’ as they call themselves and on 17th June from 7.30 p.m. until 10 o’clock The Slipped Disco hosted by DJ Groover, will take place in the Black Box, Hill Street, Belfast.

Funded by Comic Relief the project People Addressing Loneliness (PAL) has thrown up some sad statistics – 19% of Belfast’s population is over 60, by 2050 this will increase to 36%.  It’s thought that one in six older people is lonely, many live alone and don’t speak to anyone.  This means a greater risk of health problems for the elderly throughout Northern Ireland, you can imagine how depressing this can become leading to self neglect and existing rather than living.  PAL offer group events to stimulate and build friendships, their activities include a walking group, a creative writing, arts and crafts, even T’ai Chi classes taken by Stuart who is 80 years old and dancing.  Importantly there’s a Keeping In Touch group that teaches how to use smart phones and iPads, a valuable resource especially for those who are housebound.  In fact one member has discovered What’sApp and  can now talk to a friend in Columbia USA.

It’s interesting that the City Council has loneliness maps for charities to get an idea of neighbourhoods where transport is less frequent, shops some distance away and in general an area where older people could become isolated.

Director Eamon Quinn said: “People are sometimes reluctant to say they feel a bit lonely and we are very aware of this.  To help reach out, Engage with Age works with GPs, health centres, we do promotions on social media and of course word of mouth is very important.  We take a range of approaches to let people know they would be very welcome to get involved.  There will always be a friendly face when you turn up to one of our groups.”

When Gloria lost her partner she didn’t feel like dancing but she said Engage with Age got her out and about again and she met Donal who has become a great friend.  Donal added that if you sit in the house you get a lot of aches and pains.  “But if you come out dancing you don’t feel too bad.”

Kate had lost all interest in life.

“I’d been very ill, I was going nowhere.  The cinema group was a perfect start as it was a very gentle thing and that led me into the writing group and I could never have believed how much that group would help me. It completely helped me to rediscover my confidence and interest in life. Meeting lovely people. The atmosphere in the group was just right, very safe and welcoming and I can’t thank Engage with Age enough for what it has done for me”

Eamon’s message goes out to families: “We know it can sometimes be difficult to take the first step, but if you and your parents or older family members would like to join in and have fun, give us a call.  The invitation is there, come and bring a friend.”

Pass this on to anyone you think would be interested.
