IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE – PLAY ON, AND ON, AND ON

So HMV is under threat.  This national record shop has provided much musical delights to boys and girls, men and women and it looks as if it will see closures as it faces administration throughout the UK.  Probably a foregone conclusion what with downloading being the choice of many – how times have changed.  I remember the Gramophone Shop opposite the City Hall, as teenagers we headed there on Saturday morning to listen to the latest records, we’d stand in the individual booths lined with yellow sound proofing, thousands of little holes allowing the music to come through to our ears, the young assistants behind the counter happy to play us Elvis, Buddy, Adam!   My first record player was also yellow, a Dansette which opened up the world of music to me.  Then on my 21st birthday my parents gave me the Rolls Royce player, a Black Box.

I was in seventh heaven, I joined the Classics Club and stood in front of the mirror in my bedroom brandishing a knitting needle bringing my  orchestra to order and then release the leaver and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture would fill the room, Mozart would enchant and Struss had me dancing as I conducted my imagined musicians, bringing in violins here, the brass there and drums everywhere.  A brilliant way to get to know the music, I still conduct in my mind when I attend a concert, close your eyes and see the colours. The classics came by post but all else was bought in the Gramophone Shop.

Then, as a young mother bending over the twin tub, cigarette dangling as the nappies plumped in the scalding water, came the day I heard Smetana’s Bartered  Bride.

Dancer Helen Lewis was picking her favourite pieces of music for a Radio Ulster  programme.  She talked of Smetana and selected the polka – it was a joyous piece, one passage sounded just like My Aunt Jane.  I was so overcome I turned the washing machine off, put the two children in the car and headed for town.  In those days you could park in Donegall Square North right outside the Gramophone Shop so, with a child under each arm, I marched in and asked for The Bartered Bride.  The young man was helpful and looked along the rows and rows of records and then sadly told me they didn’t have it.  I was shattered, my eyes filled with tears, he was alarmed and said he’d go into the bowels of the shop and see what he could find.  Success.  Ten minutes later he reappeared in triumph brandishing the much desired record.  I played and played it, I polka’d with the children and I was mega happy.

Hearing a special piece of music for the first time is very special.  With all my favourites I know just where I was for that first time.  Isn’t it strange how music unites people of all ages, races, religions, cultures and backgrounds. The emotions experienced when listening to the Mulholland Organ in the Ulster Hall, a processional chant of unknown background in Westminster Abbey, The First Time Ever I Saw Her Face sung by Matt Cardle, Happy Talk from South Pacific or Bring Him Home sung by Peter Corry and so many more.

At one riot in USA some bright spark played loud classical music and the crowds stopped their fighting and calmed down.  Now there’s a thought!

ALL OVER FOR ANOTHER YEAR

This week the  Christmas Tree will be taken down and the floor hoovered, not a pine needle will be seen – almost!  In past experience they turn up in the most unexpected places.  Best wishes are still being exchanged and I send mine again to Candy Devine in warm Australia where she celebrated with her ever growing family, obviously a very special Grandmum to a growing band of beauties.  There’s a lot of talk about Facebook today but it unites friends far and wide and for that be thankful.

Looking back to this time last week Christmas Day was before us all, I hope yours was filled with excitement – no doubt hard work too!  Now we’re on the brink of New Year there will be parties and gatherings, in Scotland Hogmanay will soon be in full swing, here the fire will be lit and hopefully Tuesday will be a relaxed day taking our time and having a bit of craic, getting out the new diary and stashing the old.

On Christmas Day one member of our family was missing, Sally, my daughter’s faithful old dog.  She and her husband adored Sally as did we all and her death came suddenly and in a very sad way.

In November Sally was visiting us from her home in Donegal.  With her were her two companions, Bella aged five and Molly two months all various degrees of border collie.   Quite a household and it was a joy to have our  guests to stay even though the puppy was happy to leave her calling card around the place and we looked forward to having them all back for Christmas.

All well until the Thursday morning when I came downstairs to discover the remnants of a box of Belgian chocolate truffles all over the floor, papers, bags, sick and more sick.  Sally had sniffed them out and devoured the lot.  She was staggering and looking vague.  Out into the garden, walked her round and round, she drank gallons of water and seemed to be regaining her self-control.  Susie phoned the vet to be on the safe side to be told the dog might well die but it was a good sign that she had drunk so much water.  But.  Four days later she was really ill, the vet was called and dear Sally had to be put to sleep.  You can imagine how awful we all felt and still feel, she was lovable and intelligent, a most calming dog to have around.  Don’t let anyone say “just a dog” to Susie and her husband, Sally was as much family as I am.  Dogs especially offer their owners unconditional love and that is exceptional and precious.

Some people think this chocolate thing is a myth but it’s not.  Sally was almost 15 and couldn’t tolerate the toxic shock to her organs.  Any dog will react to chocolate so, PLEASE, don’t leave any lying around over the New Year holiday.  Also poisonous are the left overs, Christmas pudding and Christmas cake, mince pies and raisins, mushrooms and garlic, also alcohol.   It’s a traumatic thing to lose a much loved pet especially when it can be avoided.

I think it was sad that a shopping centre in Scotland banned a traditional nativity scene in case it offended non-religious shoppers!  Do you think non-religious shoppers would care and is this not discrimination against religious shoppers?

Nativity scenes will have been taken down now and put away for another year .  In homes, shopping centres, and churches all over the country theis little tableau celebrates the birth of baby Jesus surrounded by Mary and Joseph, the Wise Men, the Shepherds with the animals looking on.  Every year the scene is loving, peaceful and gives hope to those who come to worship and give thanks.

Another year has flown in, we stand on the edge of a new year filled with uncertainty.  I hope for you and yours Tuesday will be a day of peace and happiness, not for everyone as there are many who are going through terrible times, many who have lost a precious friend or relative and face an unpredictable future.  Others have found happiness during the year, I’m thinking of a widow of 70 who has met a widower of 70 plus and they are like young lovers bathed in the pink glow of romance. They’ll marry in a few weeks time.   Life has many twists and turns.

Happy Hogmanay to all friends and relations in Scotland and beyond.  Talking of music I’ll never for get the night I sat on the grass in Prince’s Street Gardens eating  a red pepper sandwich for the first time and as the taste exploded in my mouth the fireworks began, synchronised to the music of Beethoven – what an experience.
