Amazing play by Marie Jones in the Grand Opera House Baby Grand Theatre.  Archy in Manhattanruns until Saturday 8th September 2018

If you worry about incarnation and terrified that you might come back as a cockroach, take comfort from this play.  In life Archy was a verse poet who mixed with friends who all shared his literary background they meet and the craic is great.   All’s well until the night our poet got a bit carried away and fell from a tall building in Manhattan and ended up under a bus or a yellow cab or something that squashed the life out of him.  Sad.  But all is not lost.  Very soon he reappears but, as he says, he’s has transmigrated into a cockroach!  Then the fun and the adventure starts, he begins to meet and make new friends, especially Mehitabel the alley cat with a soft side who once was Cleopatra, a sad spider who fears there will be no flies to eat because of the ‘swatters’ and if that happens what will become of her pram full of 150 mouths to feed!  But still she weaves the stuff of fairy tales in her delicate webs.  The moth is beautiful and untouchable as she flies close to the flame and the shock when she does get too close and there’s a distinct ‘fizz’ as she burns up.  There are also lightning bugs and rats even a parrot in the cast of creatures all presented to us by six excellent actors.

Marie Jones has taken her story line from two characters created in 1916 by a journalist with the Evening Sun in New York.  Don Marquis had on going fun with his characters in his column which eventually grew into a book, became a film and a stage play but Marie has put her own spin on the story and it’s fascinating and funny.  Director Ian McElhinney has gathered a fine cast and they work hard for him, it’s physical and the dialogue is non-stop.

Abigail McGibbon, Katie Tumelty and Tara Lynne O’Neill work alongside Dan Gordon, Michael Condron and Matthew McElhinney and they play a number of insects and animals.  All except Matthew whose story we follow from beginning to end, he is the cockroach with a literary bent, a cockroach who craves a typewriter to continue creating verse even though it means he has to jump onto each key to make a word and because he can’t manage the shift key, all his writings are in lower case.  This is where Matthew gets physical jumping on each key to write his poetry.

If you think this is complex and fanciful it is but it’s enthralling.  Great acting by the cast and a special word (in lower case) for Dan Gordon who plays a variety of parts and leads the dancing in the Irish Quarter of Queen’s when our cockroach friend gets off the train at the wrong stop and falls in with escapees from the Emerald Isle.  With the help of film on two side screens we get the atmosphere of downtown Manhattan or a tramp ship or the Orient Express, Archy gets around!

I would encourage you to go and see ‘Archy in Manhattan’, it’s very different to the usual theatre we see here and that is to be applauded.

The big and tragic news last week was the burning of the Bank Buildings and the devastation this has caused to Belfast town and to the staff.   I saw all the pictures, watched the live coverage, and who was the man who held his phone camera focused on the burning building for so long?  Well done to him because it provided riveting viewing.  Just when it looked as if it was under control, like some kind of Japanese dragon tongues of flame began to belch through the windows of the middle floors.  It was compulsive viewing but it was only on Thursday when I walked towards the twisted and charred ruin that it really hit home, and I couldn’t help but cry.  The lady beside me was crying too.  She said she practically lived in Primark and showed me a bag she had bought only the previous Saturday.  Her friend, Mary Flynn was the longest serving staff member, for 43 years this was her home from home.  In fact Mary was the one chosen to cut the ribbon when the new store opened in the Bank Buildings.  Having lost her husband in January after 48 years, as Margaret said, it’s another bitter blow.

What will happen now?  No doubt something positive will raise from the ashes to give Belfast the boost it needs.  Hopefully.

In general, recent news puts a real damper on anyone who loves their town or city.  It used to be a pleasure to go into Belfast or Coleraine or Enniskillen but now we’re more often than not faced with grey shutters splashed with graffiti.   And we’re blamed for shopping on line and putting the high street at risk!  Do ‘they’, who ever they are, stop to think why?  

It isn’t always easy to get into town, buses aren’t as frequent as they used to be, parking is a nightmare – and that’s even before the bendy bus – car parks charge the earth and certainly in Belfast, taxies are limited as to where they can go.  Not allowed into pedestrian areas, so hard luck if you’ve been on a shopping spree in Castle Court (back door only) or Boots in Donegall Place (walk to Donegall Square North). There’s no doubt we are being driven away from independent living when it comes to travel, even last week we were advised by the powers that be to walk or cycle rather than take the car – sorry, not possible.  And when the Glider buses  do come into operation this week – well the already experienced chaos will be multiplied three, four or five fold.  I have to sympathise with the parents who parked on the forbidden bus lane.  What was their option, little primary school children on their first day at school needed their parents to be with them for safety and security – what will happen Monday morning?

And it’s not only in cities here in the North.  I was in the delightful little town of Ardara in Donegal a couple of weeks ago and that usually vibrant place looks depressed.  Since the Ulster Bank closed their doors – against all opposition – the roll on effect has been dramatic.  I watched lots of people, mainly visitors, going up to the doors to be faced with blank windows and a ‘for sale’ notice – not even a cash point remains.  Other shops have taken up the challenge and will allow card transactions but there’s a lot more to banking than getting 50 euro out of a machine. Apparently within 18 months 10 outlets have closed, flower shops,  a clothing shop that had been there for 50 years, a pub and I’m told a large part of the blamed lies at the closure of the bank.  Although Ardara will cope and win in the end, there’s talk now of the Ulster Bank in Killybegs closing so in future customers from the Ardara area could face at least an hours journey to Donegal Town or on to Letterkenny.  Granted there’s a mobile bank twice a week which means takings have to be held on to for days which is an obviously security risk.  The Credit Union still operates and at the moment the Post Office takes lodgements but there again there’s talk of post offices closing throughout Ireland.  My own post office has begun to take lodgements – is this a portend for future banking cut backs?

Do It Yourself Culture

I was in Boots looking for a Max Factor foundation.  I was in a hurry for an appointment and expected just to lift it and pay.  It wasn’t on the shelf so I looked for an assistant but there was no one around and I had to go.  Called back an hour later, still no assistant so I asked at another counter.  “They don’t have anyone attending their counter any more, you just lift what you need.”  I can’t find what I need.  “The girl comes in sometimes to stock up the shelves but don’t know when she’ll be back.”  Not much good to me.  Instead of what I wanted I took something similar and at the checkout I lamented the fact there was no one in attendance for information and advice.  “No, you’re right but it’s not just here, apparently they’ve withdrawn regular staff from all the stores.”  If this is true it’s what called the thin end of the wedge and soon there will just be a dehumanised stores where you pick what you want and then pay at a self-checkout.  And because we use these self-checkouts in large supermarkets, staff have been cut!  You do your shopping, arrive at the pay point, begin to put items through and more often than not for me anyway, I have to call for help as the machine scolds me and won’t co-operate! It can be very frustrating.  

With the pace of life today convenience is important but if we turn more and more to home delivery from supermarkets we’ll end up with warehouses, a van and driver.  So full circle to mail order.  

Apparently today £1 in every £5 is spent on mail order.  Why?  Because no matter where you live there’s the option to ‘go on line’ although only if you have a computer or a smart phone.  Using a catalogue is easier because you can telephone the outlet and talk to a person, an actual person, and although delivers is swift and efficient the cost is prohibitive.  I spoke to a manufacturer about a couple of items I was interested in and the postage and packing to my address came to more than the two items put together – forget it.

What’s The Answer

So I asked some shoppers what can be done to preserve the high street?  

“It would help if the shop assistants were polite and knowledgeable.”  “I remember the days you could buy a dress and have the alterations done in the shop.”  “I’m sure shop assistants are worried about their futures but if they are dismissive of me and my wants I’m not going to return and that threatens them.”  “These young people should be trained and taught their please and thank yous, and sorry when you have a complaint.” “Serve a glass of wine!”

This is the story all over Ireland, North and South. With bendy buses and Brexit looming, it’s scary biscuits!   However, on a positive note – I am finding our restaurant standards for service are improving every day.

But thoughts go back to the Bank Buildings.  It’s one thing seeing the devastation on television but when you turn the corner into Corn Market and see for yourself, well, as I say, it reduced me to tears and it has become a sight seeing must.

I felt like voyure but I was actually at a tourist attraction, hundreds of people had gathered mid afternoon on Thursday, a strange silence, a fire engine throbbing gently and the sight of camera phones being held up.  All praise for the staff who guided shoppers to safety, to the firemen and women who battled the flames so bravely, and to the many people who have offered help.  Hopefully other shops will soon be back to normal – although that little area in Belfast will never be normal again.

Of course the other big story was the visit of Pope Francis last weekend.  The Sunday service in Phoenix Park was a bit of a washout, he looked old and frail and was limping badly.  What he said was balm to some ears and far from enough to others.  I got the feeling the poor man didn’t really know the truth before he arrived in Ireland.

It’s not easy being the Pope and he’s probably right, we should be praying for him perhaps even more so for those who surround him in Vatican City.
