There was a spectacular picture on the front of one of the national papers with the headline: The World Is On Fire and a graphic of the countries of the world glowing red. At home I notice branches turning brown and falling off the trees, the ground cracking open and fields and gardens parched brown. Then the heavens opened yesterday bringing much needed rains but too much for some areas where people are in distress having to cope with flooding. All this and the pressures of Brexit which, no matter what you think of the situation, has an extreme bearing on our lives. And what are we concerned about – the name of a bus stop!
Is this why Love Island is proving so popular, pure escapism; thousands of us waiting for tonight’s episode and tomorrow’s finale when the most popular couple will be awarded the prize money. HERE WE GO AGAIN
Another sequel trying to best the original. Not many re-makes stand up against the first time round and for me anyway Mamma Mia – Here We Go Again is typical of such a failure.
I have lost friends over this opinion!
I accept I am in the minority but I was disappointed in the reworking of Mamma Mia, contrived and rumoured to be conceived purely as a money maker.
At a party last night I had a heated discussion with a young man who is an Abba freak and loved the film. But in the end I agree with him that Abba is probably the best group ever and their songs unique and he agreed with me that the film was a bit contrived and that it really came to life when the original cast members put in their brief appearance so we begged to differ and clinked glasses!
Ten years ago the original burst into our lives and it was joyous, all those great songs and Meryl Streep not to mention Pierce Brosnan! Sadly, the latest offering for me didn’t cut the mustard. The first half hour was like watching paint dry, songs I’d never heard of mixed with some of the old favourites. By the time I’d worked out the flashbacks to the days when the Streep character and her two girl friends were young and still at college and then flashing into the present day where Streep’s daughter is opening her new Greek hotel in memory of her mother who died the year before.
It was a reunion, all her mum’s friends, then, after a row, her own boy friend makes a surprise entrance and all is well. Then the granny arrives in the strange shape of Cher in blond wig and tight fitting bling. She spies an ex called Fernando – cue for song – the hotel manager. His acting is appallingly stiff and how she could fancy him is beyond me and a horrible snog happens! Love Island this is not.
The old gang save the show, Christine Baranski still looking for a man, spying a handsome young hunk her one liner is priceless “Be still my beating vagina”! Julie Walters is brilliant and of course Brosnan who still can’t sing, seems a little vague about what’s going on but still has that masculine charisma, some turn on! At the end there is a touching scene where Meryl Streep materialises to her daughter and it’s a tear jerker.
Coming out of the cinema, one man told me it was a way of spending a couple of hours in comfort, a young woman said she just hated it and people just drifted away but having enjoyed the film. And that’s the truth, not only are people enjoying Here We Go Again and the big production numbers but the makers are coining it. More power to everybody but let’s leave it at that, please not Mamma Mia – Here We Go Again Again.
One very positive point – the Movie House at Glengormley has become the most comfortable picture house I’ve ever been in – delightful reclining seats with great back support, so comfy. I suppose the measure Mamma Mia -Here We Go Again is the fact that I didn’t fall asleep!
Paperboy – Sixth Tele
This is the last day to enjoy Paperboy at the Lyric Theatre – a shame because this musical play could run and run. Theatre has a good future thanks to Youth Music Theatre UK and the boys and girls who belong to this organisation. To say I enjoyed it is an understatement and undoubtedly a star was born.
The audience was swept along by our lovable character Tony Macaulay a young paperboy who tells the story of author Tony Macaulay, originator of the musical play set in the days when he was a paperboy in 1975 when Curley Worlies were the chocolate bar of taste and The Bay City Rollers the heart throbs of both boys and girls.
For four days the theatre rocked to the sheer joy of around 35 young people filling the stage, Tony played by Sam Gibson (mark that name) is only 14 and Sharon the girl in his heart, played by Erin Ryder only 13, although it has to be said her heart belonged to Big Jaunty (Ben McGarvey) who’s dad hijacked a lemonade van for Ulster during the UUC strike! The production is peppered with superb one liners.

Patrick Connor, was hilarious as the Big Ian Paisley loving granny and the most moving scene when the protestant and catholic women embraced each other during the Peace Walk holding white paper doves and standing together. I remember it well and I suddenly realised it hadn’t all been in vain.
That’s the thing about Paperboy, it’s a huge piece of our history which brings back memories to the older people in the audience and explains a lot to the younger ones.
It was special that the grown up Tony Macaulay was sitting in front of me completely absorbed in his own story, like the rest of us laughing and crying. Did he enjoy it? “It was great, great.” And so it was.

Put It Down On Paper And Share Your Talents
Last week an anthology by the Donegal writers group was launched in Highlands Hotel Glenties. Eleven writers have covered many subjects, each one an insight into their lives and their thoughts. Pen2Paper was established eight years ago and ‘A New Day Dawns’ is their first publication and it looks set to raise a lot of money for the nominated charities.
Pen2Paper Writers’ Group: front row Judith Hoad, Cathy Anderson, Liz Anderson, Margaret O’Kane; back row – Anne Leonard, Geraldine McBrearty, Stephen Thomas, Dixi Patterson and Charlie O’Doherty.
The title is taken from one of Cathy Anderson’s poems. This mother, grandmother and great grandmother writes of sitting at her kitchen window sipping a cup of tea, looking over the Sperrin Mountains, the grey clouds, the morning mist and the sun ‘peeking through the openings’, the cat, the little brown striped birds, even the pink and blue plastic pegs on the clothes-line draws her attention as a new day dawns.
In the late 1980s Liz Anderson’s first poem was about TV game show host Hughie Greene! in 2018 she features another famous man: ‘A wee clump of snowdrops growing beside a wooden cross on a neat and well-kept grave in his native Bellaghy. There rests the Poet Laureate that we are so proud of.’
The Wee Soddy, takes her back to 1864 and the cruel eviction of her great grandparent. a vivid account of how neighbours took the family in before building them a new cottage, family history which means a lot to Liz and it’s important that she has passed on these painful memories to future generations.
The late Peggy Hegarty was shy about creative writing but discovered her talents at the Pen2Paper group; one of her poems is about the joys of meeting together, not to talk about the weather as she says but to find inspiration and how the words flow when ‘the drop of a pin can almost be heard, heads are down as word follows word.’ She also writes about the garden of her youth, the joy of tending the flowers and the vegetables only to return years later to find the garden had become wild and overgrown. I know this feeling, I share the heartbreak she felt. She, like me, was left with a vivid dream of walking with her mother along the paths amongst the beautiful flowers.
Author Judith Hoad delights in extending her journalistic and feature writing to creative work. In ‘Walking the Lane in Springtime’ she writes: ‘Oh! to be a raven Now that Spring is here, To twist and turn And roll and drop Never showing fear’. Her poems reflect the seasons whereas Anne Leonard’s short stories talk of memories, one looking back to a Hollowe’en night, the interaction between stern Granny Gray and her own children and the momentous event at two minutes past midnight.
The language flows in poems and articles.
‘Solid, worn palms A lifetime of graft Moments etched forever Along curving, ebbing veins’, Geraldine McBrearty’s thoughts of her cherished grandmother, Mary Ann Gallagher. The observation of deftly rolling dough, twisting arthritic joints, memories which Geraldine says: ‘Perhaps one day we will look down And once again see Granny’s hands As our own.’
Like so many creative writers, Eilish McBride remembers being praised for her compositions in school and later in life found her voice again in a writing group. At eight years of age going to the Ritz Cinema in Ballybofey: ‘rich red velvet curtains hiding the screen and lovely light-fittings along the walls.’ The journey from going with her granny, then with friends and eventually with boys – ‘I will not go into the antics in the back seats because I might be censored.’ That’s for another edition of Pen2Paper.
‘How does one become a writer?’
When asked this question Mark Twain replied: ‘Just polish a chair with the seat of your pants.’ That’s what Charlie O’Doherty has done with his fascinating 1960s hitchhiking adventure from Donegal to Istanbul, being chased by a night watchman in Belgrade as he slept in a large concrete pipe and soldiers standing over him with tommy guns. ‘When I told them I was from Ireland both of them shook my hand and called me Comrade.’
Grandmothers feature in so many of the poems and articles. Margaret O’Kane tells of finding her grandmothers’s 1917 hand-written will wrapped in tissue paper and containing one blue earring. She also takes us to Inis Boffin Island when life was simple and the trauma of young Seamus leaving the life he loved to go to secondary school on the mainland.
Dixi Patterson brings us up to date with that ‘Glorious second between sleeping and waking, between dream and reality the mind pauses.’ Reality is family tragedies, famine in South Sudan, Calais camps and Trump’s puerile tweets. But she also acknowledges gratitude for one more day and night and for Virginia McLaurin aged one hundred and six, fulfilling her life-dream dancing in the White House with a back President. Dixi celebrated her six birthday on 2nd of June. ‘It took me no time at all to put ink into my best foundation pen and – with none of the blots or spelling mistakes that would usually adorn the work of a five year old – I penned an invitation to Her Majesty inviting her to my sixth birthday party in Belfast.’
Unfortunately her Maj was unable to attend, it was the same day as her Coronation!
Stephen Thomas, writer and lead singer for the Donegal rock band The Bellies, writes of a friendship between a boy who died when he was seven years old and the child who comes to live in his house. ‘The Child Ghost’ is gentle and beautiful.
