So Andy has a plan, at the top of his voice he recites the only poem he knows – Grays Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, feeds Hanna clove rock and they usually get where they want to go – or nearly. Talk about frustration!
Poor Andy, he has his own home and it’s ready for Hanna to move in but will she? Is she too brainwashed by her mother to leave? Could the old woman go with them? There are many twists and turns, Cissy Cassidy (Carol Moor) visits and put in her opinion and it all ends in prayers and praise of St. Philomena. And there’s another problem.
Of course the writing is remarkable, the rhythms and the language, Brian Friel is a master. The set is un-nerving, all the action is about eight feet in the air on a large diamond shaped stage tilted towards the audience. It certainly concentrates the mind for both audience and actors. And the actors obviously love their characters and bring a ring of reality to the stories they tell, we laugh with them and we cry with them.
Director Emma Jordan talks of frustration in her programme note, the strangle hold of organised religion, the small town insularity and troubling family relations. She brings all this out perfectly in LOVERS.
