There is much in the news at the moment about gambling with a new government report much anticipated and good news if it’s going to trigger some controls on on-line gambling.  I was really disgusted with Edwina Currie (above) last night on 5 Live radio when she more or less said this unwarranted hype about addiction, which  is very minimal, is unnecessary as the majority of people gamble responsibility.  She sounded her usual  patronising self.  How she could say that after listening to the interviews with parents who had lost their child to suicide and another whose son had gambled everything when his habit got out of control.  She really is a bitter woman who seems to glory in being outspoken even when it’s hurtful and in my opinion totally self obsessed when it comes to her image.

His addiction to gambling began at the age of ten on a cross channel ferry when he watched a truck driver using a one armed bandit. “I was fascinated. When he came home to Belfast he went to a rave in the Ulster Hall and it all started over again but this time he was buying drugs, testing them for purity and then giving them to other users. Eventually he had what he describes as a wine cellar of supplies.
“Then the police came to my door, I invited them in, they discovered my cellar of supplies and I was charged and convicted of being in possession of Class A,B and C drugs with intent to supply.”
That raid changed his life. He ended up in rehabilitation where someone recognised his ability to talk about his life in a constructive way and suggested he should train to become a councillor.

Sorry to hear of the death of JP Dunleavey, he of the Ginger Man.

 I’ll never forget my mother storming into my bedroom with the book in her hand – held at arms length as if contaminated.  She certainly thought it was!  She threw it across the room to me sitting on the bed.  ‘How dare you bring this filth into my house.’ What!  A funny book with a few, good few, rude bits.  I asked her had she read it.  ‘Certainly not.  I wouldn’t read such dirt.’  So how did she know what it contained?  I actually threw it back and told her to go away and read and enjoy it.  I was not popular.

 P Donleavy, born in New York of Irish parents, lived in a huge old mansion in Westmeath.  He  was 91 when he died and will be remembered mainly for The Ginger Man, his 1955 published book which became something of a classic, probably thanks to the reaction of people like my mum!  It became notorious, banned for obscenity in America until 1965 and in Ireland until the 70s,  but a fascinating story which examined the drinking and sexual exploits of  university student Sebastian Dangerfield, a young American studying law in  post-war Dublin.  Critics said Dunleavey ‘hit on a narrative voice so beguilingly quirky it gave focus to a storyline that otherwise was meanderingly episodic.’

Dunleavey gave the first draft to his mate Brendan Behan to read, he is reputed to have said:  “Mike.  This book is going to go around the world and beat the bejaysus out of the Bible.”

I wish I’d know that quote, it would certainly have stopped my mother in her tracks.  Years later she laughed at this story and said she had read the book, not her style she said, but quite interesting!
