THE REAL TRAGEDY
Can you imagine this being your child? All alone and weakening trying, probably in vain, to salvage a few belongings and keep his or her head above water at the same time.
My heart goes out to the people of the Caribbean and Florida, hurricane after hurricane decimating islands and mainland, leaving vast areas razed to the ground, homes and businesses devastated and heartbreak and illness ahead, knowing if you get home your possession may well be looted.
But the child in the photo is trying to cheat death by drowning in Bangladesh, yet the destiny of these people and more in India is designated way down the TV bulletins, it makes me feel ill to think of what these gentle people are going through.
I’ve a vested interest as I worked in Bangladesh for a few weeks and I’ve seen the effect of flash flooding in the northern foothills where the water cascades across the Indian border. The erosion is breathtaking, beautiful in its own way; the rivers have carved patterns across the vast flat plain. This country lies at the base of the Himalaya Mountains, hemmed in by Burma and India. It’s the largest delta in the world and so very flat in the middle of the flood plains of three major rivers, the Barhmaputra, the Meghna and the famous Ganges. They all meet in this small and endangered country, so often swamped when the rains come and the waters flow fast into the Bay of Bengal.
The local people build dykes to retain the water and protect their little plots of rice and the vulnerable apple green shoots. They dig down and sink huge pipes to channel water round the agricultural ground but at a time like this that’s as effective as walls of tissue paper and tunnels of toilet rolls.
When the rains come animals share any tiny piece of dry land, fathers tie their children up in the branches of the tallest trees, and that’s not very high. They try to get the bicycle rickshaws up there too in an attempt to save their main means of earning money. I flew in a Shorts Skyvan from the north of Bangladesh to Chittagong in the south. The rains were coming and we had to skirt a cyclone, amazing cloud formations in the distance but although far away, it was having its effect and we were buffeted from one side of the sky to the other. I overdosed on sniffing lavender to calm myself and was spraying it like holy water on the other dozen passengers. I thought all was up when the stewardess, who was strapped into her seat like the rest of us, burst into tears and began to pray! Below was just water. It looked as if we were crossing a vast river but in fact this was just one sheet of water, villages were completely wiped out.
From Chittagong we went to the small islands in the Bay of Bengal where the people made us cinnamon tea and brought rice cakes and little buns. They made us welcome and we had a memorable time singing and laughing. On the way back the boatman asked me to marry him, he was about 50, no teeth and covered with engine oil as the old fishing boat was a bit temperamental! His smile was to die for but not to marry!
The day we were due to leave the capital, Dhaka, the rains arrived. You know the expression – it came down like stair rods? Well, it did, it didn’t take time, the country was under a giant power hose. For us a novelty, we ran out into it and it hurt, not cold but harsh and constant it just didn’t let up. It rained all day and all night, deafening on the corrugated iron roof. The next morning we had to leave early for the airport. The land rover had difficulty manoeuvring through the flooding in the city. We got to the airport and the noise of the rain made it difficult to hear what the woman at the check in desk was saying. We sat on the tar mac for about 20 minutes and then there was a roar of the engines and we raced for the take off. Only once we were airborne did we hear that the runway had begun to collapsed. We were the last plane to take off for some weeks and we only just made it, another three minutes and we would have been unable to leave.
We also heard that the patchwork of little islands we’d visited only a few days before had been swamped and there were no survivors. My ardent fisherman was probably amongst them but I’ll always remember his smile and the goodness of the people of Bangladesh.
There’s a crack in everything, That’s how the light gets in. Leonard Cohen. For all people suffering, especially those who have gone through flooding and are still in shock in Donegal, let’s hope there’s truth in this.
The Weir
Much has been written about this play by Conor McPherson which is set on a stormy night in The Weir, a public house in the West of Ireland. There are five characters each with a story to tell, some are lengthy and some are short, all are tinged with the supernatural. The men each have a standing in the community, batchelor Jack (Marty Maguire) owns the local garage, Jim (Frankie McCafferty) works with him and lives with his ailing mother, Brendan (Patrick Ryan) runs the pub. and Finbar (Garrett Keogh) is the successful businessman with money and prestige.
It’s Finbar who brings a pretty Dublin girl (Kerri Quinn) into the bar to introduce her to the boys. Valerie has bought an old house on the fairy road and intends renovating it and living in the village, much to Finbar’s delight! As the evening progresses so do the stories of graveyards, the supernatural and the ouija board. Although the men are silenced when Valerie tells her tragic story, it’s Jack’s testimony that proves the most memorable, a man who lays bear his life to a girl who just might be his future.
There’s humour in the play, the craic between the men is typical of the Donegal pubs I know but I didn’t get the chill factor, the set is authentic and well lit but the fire looked dead, the wind dies away too soon and the ghosts didn’t lurk in the corners and despite a bright white light coming through the door at the end of the evening, the barman offers a torch to light the way home. Disappearing into a cold, bleak, black night would have been more effective.
Thought provoking play but I struggle with the advertising material that calls it a masterpiece of modern theatre, a classic.
As one of the men says, ‘a strange little evening’.

A Unique Gift
The commemorations to mark the First World War continue. Last Thursday a special delivery arrived at St. George’s Memorial Church in Ypres, Belguim via the Tyne Cot Memorial,and the Menin Gate. At 8 p.m. two world war one army lorries pulled up with a present from the British Bell Ringers Association, eight bells from the large tenor bell to the small treble, also on board were a set of 16 hand bells. They were all cast at the famous foundry of John Taylor in Loughborough where Great Paul, was created, the largest British cast bell in UK which rings out from St. Paul’s Cathedral. Taylor bells are heard all over the world, in Gozo, Washington Dc. China and Canada and throughout the UK.
The set of eight cast in a type of bronze are inscribed with the names of bell ringers who lost their lives in the War to End all Wars and have a poppy motif around the shoulder. A group of British bell ringers will install the full peal in time for the official dedication on 22nd October, they will be blessed by Canon Dr. Robert Innes, Bishop of Gibraltar in Europe and rung half-muffled on 11th November, the anniversary of the day WW1 ended in 1918. A team of ringers will eventually be established at the church.
Thousands of men and women from all parts of Ireland have travelled to cemeteries in and around Ypers paying their respects to family and friends who perished.
Helping organise these visits and one of the people receiving the bells in St. Church is Carrickfergus born Dame Patricia Hawkins-Windsor who is Vice Chairman of St. Georges and her husband Peter who is church warden. She has asked that the message goes out via the Irish News to all bell ringers here that they are most welcome to come to the church and rings the bells.

For many years I have been keeping an eye on 10th September. When I was at school I heard that this date was always a good day and it’s correct – usually. When I was producing Ask Anne on Ulster Television I asked the Met. office if they would check and they did and came up with the fact that this is true – usually! So if you are planning some outdoor event, keep the 10th in mind, next year because I was very wrong, However, as the old saying goes, ‘no need to worry or complain God sends sunshine after rain’. Although I don’t imagine that’s in the thoughts of those going through such trauma in other parts of the world.

Still a talking point ever after the 20th anniversary of her death but
does anyone else find the recent eulogising of Princess Diana was a bit cynical. I’m a Charles fan and I feel for him, I admire the two boys and understand their wish to commemorate their mother but the intense scrutiny seemed a bit one sided.
I met Diana at a reception for Relate Marriage Guidance in Hillsborough Castle. We were told how to greet her and how to do a curtsey but when she walked into the Throne Room, and the press cameras deafened the guests, I think we all forgot everything. She was beyond beautiful, it seemed that an overhead spotlight followed her as she moved amongst us, she certainly did light up the room. I don’t remember what she and I talked about I was so mesmerised by her eyes that were like sapphires. I thought she was brave, her visit to Relate coincided with the news that she and Charles were to separate. Ironic.

And harping back to Bruce Forsyth. Does Len Goodman think he will step into the great man’s shoes? Although a good broadcaster, his programme Partners in Rhyme is purile, even worst than Countdown and that’s saying something. The new version of Bake Off is boring and why does Paul Holywood get paid so much for so little? However, in amongst the dross, some of the drama on television at the moment is superb and having the ability to catch up is worth its weight in gold. My little bad tempered rant over!
Re weather conditions in other parts of the globe put into perspective our moanings over the weather here! It’s either too hot or too cold and always too wet! In reality we our blessed not to have any of the extremes! Yes this little corner of the world is hard to beat :-)…enjoyed your blog, as always 🙂
