All this talk about broadcasters salaries – it’s not fair to judge because it’s not an even playing field, my star man Nicky Campbell gets a huge amount but it’s not just for his BBC 5 Live morning programme, then the nine o’clock show that follows but also for his television programmes and that’s the case for most of those catapulted into the public arena last week.  I suppose if you subtract the tax they pay it brings their money down a fair bit – still a lot when you’re at the top.  The love of money is the route of all evil, so they say.

What a treat last week with the Grand Opera House Summer Youth Project’s production of Oliver. 235  teenagers and younger proved It’s A Fine Life as they spread the joy of musical theatre.  Most were on stage, others were members of stage management and some were in the orchestra pit providing the music under the baton of Wilson Shields and he certainly drew the very best out of his band.

Every young person, from 10 to 18, played their individual part and that’s what got the buzz on stage, there was no ‘set’ pieces it was just a crowd of rowdy cockneys having a ball, being scared of Bill Sykes worshiping Fagan and celebrating a happy ending for ten year old Oliver and the Artful Dodger.  I won’t pick out the main players because this was a company working as a unit under the direction of Tony Finnegan.

 Don’t let me hear another word about the youth of today – if they are handled right, given responsibility, and there’s a lot expected of them – they are brilliant. From the first little ruffians, mostly primary school age, flooding onto the stage to the gaggle of school girls pouring down the aisle it was thrilling.  And as for the audience, bar a woman in a box who kept playing with her hair, they were on the ball, many parents and grandparents and brothers and sisters. The six year old girl in front of me couldn’t contain herself, arms waving along with the cast, bouncing up and down to the music and the little three year old beside me was totally outspoken and scolded Bill Sykes at the top of her voice when he was rough the Oliver and Nancy. A brilliant production, congratulations to all involved.  Looking forward to next year.

They overcame the fear of being seen and not heard, they shouted back to the baddie, their confidence grew in that hour and they were full of childish delight. This is what theatre can do for young people and this is what is at the heart of Roma’s drama holiday, giving young people a voice, building confidence and self esteem.

And the holiday is held in the most beautiful of locations, in the shadow of Slemish Mountain in the Slemish Barn, a hostel with performance space and dormitory accommodation and set in a secure environment. This is the centre of the theatrical universe where borders work towards a show for parents and friends on the final afternoon, musical theatre, improvisation, choral speaking, singing, dance and mime and the chance to shoot a short film. There’s even Shakespeare with custard pies!
The tutors are professional and as everyone works, eats and play together there’s a family atmosphere and, praise be, there are no games consoles or computers allowed, not even television! Pure stimulating work with an end product.
