I suspect there are those who are already preparing a documentary/play/film/magazine rights, and will attempt to sign up the parents for their ‘exclusive’. The memories will be hard to live with for so many.
Making A Meal Of It
Then the whole other pantomime this week is of of BBC wages and the women who are now challenging the lack of equal pay, not for themselves because they recognise that they are very well paid, but for others in the industry both in front of and behind the scenes. Their aim bringing this to the Director General’s attention is to achieve equal pay for equal responsibility be it an engineer or a reporter. The earnings quoted last week don’t tell the real story, some of those on huge salaries are doing a number of programmes not just one so you have to look behind the headlines for the true story. Having said that, in the case of Stephen Nolan methinks the gentleman doth protest too much. I got fed up hearing how he came from humble beginnings and despite being rejected so much managed to work his way to the top and a gynormous pay cheque. It’s not money but the love of money that is the root of all evil.
I preferred the way Nicky Campbell approached the publicity around his hefty pay packet, he admitted he was on the list before it was publicised and then acknowledged it was a huge amount of money and then got on with his programming. No excuses.
Good luck to Clare Balding and Jane Garvy and their colleagues with their attempts to get parity, so get your finger out Tony Hall and take action, not in months to come, right now. This is the real story, fairness, which is so desperately needed. If it has done nothing else, the disclosure of BBC wages will hopefully bring a fairer workplace.

Girls are again in the spotlight this time with their big cricket match at Lords today. Who would have thought there’d be 27,000 at the match and ticket touts outside the grounds as the English women take on India and may well win the World Cup for the first time.
Not a lot of people know this but I am an inter-provincial cricket player! Some guides do ‘hop on’ tours for coaches visiting Belfast and there are may private bookings as well. One lady who has had her badge for some years told me that one of her most interesting trips recently was with a local group from the Women’s Institute who wanted to up the Coast Road. The skill she said, is talking to fit the time especially in Belfast. “If traffic is slow then there’s plenty of time to go into detail but if it’s not you have to talk fast!”
Visitors who bother to take a tour have a thirst for knowledge and that’s where the guides come in to their own. If you’ve taken coach tours abroad you’ll know just how essential it is to have an entertaining host full of anecdotes and information.

There are around 400 freelance guides in Ireland, 100 here in Northern Ireland and with a 97% pass rate and half of their number being multi-lingual, they are impressing the judges. “What is obvious to you may not be obvious to others so patience is important, there’s no such thing as a stupid question,” sums up the attitude.
The Institute of Tourist Guiding’s Blue Badge is the ultimate award for professional tour guides. The training course for prospective guides runs for around seven months and costs in the region of £3,500 but guiding at this level is a paid profession. NITGA’s recommended minimum rates for 2016 were £90 for half day and £160 full day. Some guides charge more and rates for extended tours differ and are based on daily rate. All NITGA guides are insured and Blue Badge Guides operate under the BB code of conduct.
Guides are employed by a variety of incoming tour operators with Excursions Ireland being the biggest employer of guides for incoming cruise ships.
