Yesterday morning, at 4 a.m., all over the world people walked for this charity. One hearty group from the Rosbeg Portnoo area of Co. Donegal were in good form, determined to achieve the 5 K walk and still smiling at the end.
Darkness into Light is an annual fundraising and awareness event for a number of Peita House organisations, including ten in the South of Ireland. Pieta offers free counselling to those suffering from suicidal thoughts, those who have been bereaved by suicide and people who are engaging in self-harm. Staff are fully qualified and provide a professional one-to-one therapeutic service.
The annual fundraising and awareness event has grown year on year to become one of the biggest events of its kind where participants gathered simultaneously at multiple locations around the world. San Francisco, Chicago, San Diego, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Boston, and Texas were also among the venues for this year’s dawn walk in the United States. The event also took place in hundreds of locations across Ireland, the UK, Canada, Australia, the Middle East and Asia. Organisers expected over 150,000 people to participate worldwide.
For the Rosbeg team and many others in the area caught the that ferry left Burtonport for Arranmore Island at 3 a.m. and those on board were geared up for the adventure, literally from dark into light. Wonderful sunrise apparently, good fun and thoughts of those going through difficulties in their lives. Well done to everyone who took part.

I was in the sell out audience in the Theatre at the Mill on Friday evening. This is a very edgy hour’s entertainment, she goes into great detail about her sex life, bodily functions and the disastrous marriages. But she is never vulgar, always funny and tender. Certainly the women identified with her experiences and the men roared with laughter. She describes what happened when the double decker bus started to vibrate sending pleasure waves through her 12 year old body then going to confession to admit her guilt, when she was sixteen her fully clothed boyfriend brushed part of his anatomy against her and she immediately panicked thinking she would be pregnant. A Tasty Dish
Don’t you learn something interesting every day? My best one in the last couple of weeks was the meaning of VEDA, as in bread. Apparently during the war a healthy life was deemed to be important so VEDA was developed and this stood for Vitamin Enriched Department of Agriculture. Tastes good no matter what it stands for, especially with a squashed banana on top! According to those who know, this malted bread is sold only in Northern Ireland so those in other parts of the world rely on their relatives to send them VEDA or to smuggle a loaf in their suitcase. But, allegedly, the recipe goes back to Scotland when it was stumbled upon by luck when a Dundee farmer’s house-keeper accidentally used damp wheat which had sprouted to produce malted wheat! When she used it for the farmer’s bread it produced a sweet-malted flavoured bread – and VEDA bread was born. Good story, great bread, especially tasty with a squashed banana spread over! Just about to indulge.
