Do You Want To Change Your Life?
‘Wonderland’, playing at the Grand Opera Hose this week is great fun but the moral of the story is you can’t run away from who you are. It was the worst day of Alice’s life, her car was stolen, she lost her job, the husband she thought she loved had left her and her daughter was getting on her nerves. You can’t really blame her for not wanting to live in the real world.
And magic happens in theatres and in the Opera House this week Alice (Kerry Ellis) gets her wish. The White Rabbit, (Dave Willetts) who used to be a judge before he left the real world, made her dream come true and whisked her and her daughter Ellie (Naomi Morris) and the upstairs neighbour off down the rabbit hole into wonderland.
But it’s not all it seems, if Alice and her neighbour Jack (Stephen Webb) and Ellie want to live in Wonderland they must pass through the Looking Glass and become the people they really want to be, Alice doesn’t change much, Dave becomes a hero and the leader of a boy band and brave enough to declare his love for Alice and Ellie becomes an obnoxious teenager.
They become embroiled in the politics of Wonderland, the power struggle between the Mad Hatter (Natalie McQueen) and the glorious Queen of Hearts (Wendi Peters).
This production is great escapism, full of colour and song, plot twists and characters you’d forgotten about, the Dormouse, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, the Cat Gang and the rest.
The set is stunning, the rabbit hole just goes on and one into the distance and the looking glass is magical. The cast, two dozen energetic actors, fill the stage and the musical director Alex Parker played the key board and conducted the orchestra with aplomb.
This is great fun, although the scary Queen threatens “off with their heads” right, left and centre, she sees sense in the end, consumes more and more jam tarts and everyone is happy.
So did the three adventures stay in Wonderland or return home wiser and happier people?

Did You Have A Lovely Mothering Sunday?
It’s interesting that there are two days to celebrate motherhood, last Sunday and the American inspired Mother’s Day on May 14th. There was a lot of chat about which is which.
Last weekend’s celebration is church based dating back to the 16th century when people attended their ‘mother church’, the church where they were christened or the main church or cathedral in their area. Families would unite to go ‘a-mothering’, workers were given time off to worship or to go home for the celebration and it was a special day. The American celebration dates back to 1908 and a woman called Anna Jarvis from West Virginia where she established services at St. Andrew’s Methodist Church. Anna was a peace worker during the the US Civil War and encouraged men in the war to remember their mothers on that day and apparently she didn’t take kindly to the action of her daughter who turned it into an international event and encouraged card manufacturers and florists to capitalise and turn it into a lucrative industry.
There are many mothers, myself included, who have pretty handmade cards tucked away reflecting children’s loving messages and posies picked in the garden.
So, if you forgot to mark Mothering Sunday dear son or daughter (mine remembered) there is still Mother’s Day to catch up.
By the way, in the interests of fairness, Father’s Day is on 18th June.
There Is Hope
Despite the cold and wind and then the sunshine, this brave bud is ready to welcome summer which is surely on the way. By next week it will be even more colourful, you can’t stop progress.
A Sniffy Red Nose
Can you believe how awful the Red Nose Day television programme was on Friday night? Face book has been full of negative comments and I know the aim is to raise money and there was no doubt the public came up trumps with a magnificent total of £90,000 plus but I wonder if anyone sat through the whole night of trivia.
A Week Of Sad News
There’s been much written about Martin McGinness mostly fairly balanced between the two chapters in his life – his past membership of the IRA and all that entailed and his more recent contribution to a positive future of Northern Ireland. Most commentators have mentioned about moving on, addresses in the church contained the same message, even Bill Clinton in his masterful oration encouraged us to put the past behind us and look to a positive future. I wonder how many of them have lost someone close and much loved due to terrorism in this country. How on earth can a grieving widow, a daughter or son, man, woman or child put that behind them and move on? Is it possible to forgive or forget in those circumstances no matter how Christian you are or are not?
Now we have the reality of a terror threat in the heart of London. It certainly seemed to throw the media into a state of disarray. From the moment of the horror that developed on Westminster Bridge it was full on television. Fine for the first hours of breaking news but then it became a loop of news, reruns of reports which were hours out of date, women reporters standing on the pavement filling time interviewing anyone and everyone, sometimes a rerun would show the hand of Big Ben two hours earlier emphasising how out of date the reports were yet this wasn’t pointed out and it sometimes made a nonsense of what was being said as the story developed.
Teresa May was stern and stately saying this behaviour will not bring the nation to its knees; of course it won’t – just take a look over the water people and see how we coped when the black days were upon us.
And now we move on to Brexit! Will we move on to some sort of agreement here in our own Assembly? Talk about living in a Wonder-land!

A Song With An Important Message
Brian Madden is probably best known as Barney Madden the boxing writer and for his book Yesterday’s Glove Men, The Golden Days of Ulster Boxing celebrating famous names like Rinty Monaghan Bunty Doran, Freddie Gilroy, Johnny Caldwell and Billy `Spider’ Kelly. “No bother with distant memories,” says Brian, “but recent memories were, to put it mildly, rather vague . . . thus the name of the song, Why Can’t I Remember . . .? I’ve had aunts and uncles and friends who have suffered Alzheimer’s, most recently a brother in law who died just 18 months ago and I wanted to do something not only to highlight the disease but also to raise funds.”
This is the most common type of dementia and the frightening statistic reads that in the UK, 225,000 people will develop dementia this year, that’s one person every three minutes.
She can remember looking back to school days, through nursing and being a young wife and mother. But, she asks, why can’t I remember the days of the week?

So Adam Faith was a spy. A secret agent sent by MI6 to spy on Fidel Castro. I knew he was special. My most loved pop star and actor. How’s this for a bazaar overnight tail. I know this gentleman so I believe every word. I will change the names so protect the innocent!
“Patrick and I were introduced to a guy called Michael at a social event. Got home but at 1 am I received a text saying the sender was glad to have met me. I foolishly replied asking who and suggested texting back at a reasonable hour in the morning.
They immediately replied signing of the text with ‘M’. I made the assumption that the M was the Michael we’d met earlier, I was furious that this guy had my number and texted my mutual friend who’d been with us saying I was annoyed that he’d given out my number. However, it transpired that the person who had texted me at 1 a.m. was a woman in a bar who’d met a guy who bought her a drink and at end of the evening they swapped phone numbers.”

“I think he must have given her a bogus number or changed a digit in his own and she ended up with my mobile number. Unfortunately I only deduced this after many many texts resulting in me almost threatening this woman. It got so bizarre she asked me if she could ring me and listen to my voice so that she could hear that I wasn’t the guy she met in the bar!
I foolishly agreed thinking that would get rid of her.
I commiserated with her and said it was disgusting that she had been set up.
Half an hour later, still in the middle of the night, I was getting texts asking how did she know I wasn’t disguising my voice or got a friend to answer the call.”
Quite literally a night-mare.
“In the morning my phone was full of texts and missed calls. I threatened to call the police and report a nuisance call and blocked her number. You couldn’t make it up!”
One question, what took you so long to switch your phone off and get a good night’s sleep! Actually, strange things do happen in the middle of the night. I had a call at 4.55 a.m. recently, no one there when I replied; I phoned the number and there was just an answering machine. Didn’t leave the message I felt like leaving but one of these days I will ring again and see who answers! Especially distressing when you have a family member seriously ill in hospital, you immediately think a call like that heralds bad news. I am also getting a lot of calls from 0161 and 0113 numbers, now I don’t say a word and they cut off. There are a lot of scams so advice is, don’t speak until you’re spoken to! And if it’s one of these call centres just click off. If someone says – ‘can you hear me’ – definitely don’t respond, it’s a way of making a connection with your number and storing it for future nefarious use.
