Rubbish!

We’d quite an argument last night, empty pizza boxes caused mayhem. Brown bin said one, black bin said another, absolutely not the blue bin said all.  The new edition of Belfast City Matters say cardboard food boxes go into the recycling bin (Blue) but NOT takeaway pizza boxes, these go into your compost bin.  What!  My last directive from waste education was pizza boxes go into the black bin.

Phone a very nice man on 0800 0328 100 and he confirms that torn up pizza boxes do indeed go into the Brown bin alongside garden waste or, he said,  into the Black bin.  Everyone’s  a winner!

Phone call just now from an 0161 number, an ‘advisory’ company spouting something about money I’m owed.  Well, I’m not.  Young woman just talked and talked so quickly I couldn’t understand a word she said.  Told her this didn’t apply to me – “but you came up on our data base.”  Well, please take me off your data base.  Had to insist and she sounded so sad.  I rang the number back and indeed the company does exist – I suspect a call centre somewhere.  I don’t tolerate any of these calls usually and certainly didn’t this one but I found it interesting just to go through the motions.  I don’t know what the outcome would have been, probably asking for banking details which just won’t happen.  Then I was told by my daughter, if you get a call like this and they ask “Can you hear me?” hang up double immediately, this is some sort of code for them to log your number and pass it on to someone who will manipulate your details and bill you for extortionate amounts.

I woke up in the middle of the night to hear Trump address his peers and in the mist of the early hours he sounded quite presidential – with a small p.  Today with the analysts take on what he said, I realise he said really nothing.  Full of intentions, sounds great, where is the money coming from and who is being deprived to pay for roads and bridges.  He’s m’darling – even his supporters had nothing to say afterwards except how wonderful he is.  Why?  At least he didn’t tell the world he’s going to make America great again.

Hats Off To Our Medical Community

Spent 48 hours in the City Hospital for a quick ‘procedure’ and I’d like to publicly say a very big thank you and congratulations to the staff, nurses, doctors, specialists and other patients for their excellent care and attention, kindness and good humour.  We complain but when the chips are down we have a lot to be thankful for so, girls and boys, take a bow and please look after my dear cousin who is with you at the moment.

Do you think Rory McIlroy was a naughty boy or a bigot to play golf with Donald Trump?  Tricky question?  Not at all, personally  I think he was right, you can’t influence anyone really effectively without contact and personal contact at that – that’s what I don’t like about leaving the EU, no voice round the table to state our case for the best dea, and no Stormont to even have a case.

And while I don’t expect they discussed major issues, Rory is a nice guy, kind and as far as I know, tolerant and obviously Trump admires him.  It was, as our young golfer says, only a game of golf but who knows what the lasting legacy of those few hours may be.  Little acorns and all that.  Am I a romantic?  There’s a place for romantics.

Love isn’t always enough. There are extreme forces here trying to prevent protestants and catholics marrying and setting up home and having children, not everywhere and not as vehemently as 30 years ago but still, depending on where you live, it’s often not acceptable to marry out of your own community. Even in our secular society some couples arrange a church wedding so they’ll have a pretty background for the photographs and no other reason.
With this in mind here’s an appeal with a difference, not for money, not for a missing person but for happily married couples.
The Northern Ireland Mixed Marriage Association was founded in 1974 following a conference at Corrymeela with the aim to provide support and information to those in or contemplating a mixed marriage. They are planning their third book on the subject, five years ago they talked to couples in Northern Ireland in ‘Mixed Emotions’, three years ago to children of mixed marriages in ‘Both Sides Now’, currently they are asking couples who have married and had to move abroad to set up home to get in touch and tell their story.
‘Exiles For Love’, will be distributed free of charge to integrated schools and shared campuses although NIMMA would love it to be accepted into all schools and organisations. It’s designed to stimulate debate amongst 14 and 15 year olds and give them information on what to expect with inter-marriage. Chairman Ken Dunn reports: “One of the major impediments to mixed marriage in church in these islands – GB as well – Irish and English Roman Catholic Bishops are vehemently against Eucharistic sharing. This is very divisive to couples and their families and friends right from the start of their marriages and beyond, effectively stopping couples from receiving together. The rest of the world has moved on and accommodates people with the sharing option.”
Initially the plan is to publish 2000 books but first of all they need the couples to come forward to make this an interesting, educational and entertaining book, -identities can be protected. “Already we have a couple who live in South Africa, Jimmy from Tiger’s Bay and Anne from Greencastle. They felt they had no alternative but to leave Northern Ireland so they emigrated to Durban in the 70s. Mixed marriage was never their problem, but other people made it theirs.”
So when it comes to reconciliation it seems not q problem of those in love but those around them.
