Farewell to a Dear Friend
My dear friend Una O’Callaghan was buried yesterday at Good Shepherd Church Ormeau Road. She died on Thursday at the ripe old age of 91 after a life full of music and song, laughter and love. I’ll never forget the day I met her. It was in Ulster Television and I’d been promoted to my dream job, production assistant working on programmes, sitting in the ‘box’ with the director, in my case Derek Bailey, and studio technicians, timing programmes and calling shots plus all the paperwork involved.
My first job as PA was to time five songs for the following week’s Teatime with Tommy with Una , a beautiful woman with a rich mezzo soprano voice. We repaired to Tommy James’s tiny office on the top floor, he played the piano as Una ran through the songs. Surrounded by shelves stacked with records, all I had to do was start the stopwatch at the first note and stop it at the last note and write down the duration beside the title. Nerves got the better of me. I think Una knew by the look on my face that I’d made a ‘hames’ of it. Messed up entirely. But the dear lady didn’t act the diva and never did. Instead, when Tommy left the room she took my arm, held me back and said, ‘I’d like to run over those again, would you mind?’ Would I mind! An answer to my prayers. This time I got the timings spot on thanks to her coaching with the stop watch. She knew I was in a panic but she didn’t make me feel bad about it, she had that gift of love for everyone. It was evident in Good Shepherd, grandsons reading and playing the violin, her daughter Fionnuala sang in tribute to her mother.
And her son Eoin struck a cord at the funeral when he said that his mother was irresistible. So she was, I so enjoyed sitting talking to her in her Rosetta home with her daughter Patricia, it was hard to leave that cosy room full of chat and memories, talking about her husband Maurice, about their appearances on stages round the countryside, their rich voices thrilling audiences, Studio Opera, recitals, radio broadcasts and the Arts Theatre. She played Kate in the Hostage in 1980 and it was a delight to work with her again.
Una appeared on many Ulster Television programmes and so did her husband Maurice who was one of the original voices to promote the new station that opened in 1959. His basso profound gave authority to many live commercials.

What a beautiful way to remember such a special gentleman, a cherished friendship which lived on through Una and will never be forgotten.
No Compassion For School Boy Players
I am totally disgusted with the Ulster Schools’ Committee and the way they handled the debacle over yesterday’s scheduled Schools Rugby match between Friends’ School Lisburn and Belfast Royal Academy. Granted Friends’ booked a ski trip for pupils during half-term, granted they knew there was a quarter final match due to take place on 18th February and granted they took members of the team away on a winter break. They had made it known to the committee that they would be away on that date. E-mails flew backwards and forwards when the school realised their boys had done so well and were in the run up to the quarter finals but a break down in communications left the members of the committee with a decision to make and as a result, pupils in bits.
Would they insist the school forfeit the game allowing BRA a walkover to the semis or arrange an alternative day once the boys came home? I know some hard men went on social media to say the school and the pupils would learn a lesson from this, that a contract is a contract and should be fulfilled. But the fact that the committee dug their studs in and insisted no alternative date would be contemplated, shouted out something else to me and many like me.
One Facebook entry summer it up:
“Ulster branch all over living in the dark ages still ran by old blazers out of touch with those on the ground yes a mistake by the school but easily rescheduled just digging heels in to make a stupid point and the kids suffer.”
Rugby at school boy level is a serious business, the boys learn from their coaches and it is well disciplined and inspires teamwork and trust as well as a determination to succeed and a great deal of pride. Now, do as I’ve done and turn your back to the pitch and look at the crowd, the fathers, and sometimes the mothers, who are shouting ‘encouragement’ to their children. It can be quite violent, win at all costs. Now that hardness is reflected in this decision that, despite the fact that BRA offered to play the game tomorrow in an act of sportsmanship, these men of power decided they wouldn’t deviate from the rules. They would teach them a lesson.
I would rather these young man had been show what compassion is, how through an act of cooperation a resolution could have been arrived at. Instead, boys who tried so hard and did so well are left devastated that they didn’t have a chance to progress through the Schools’ Cup, maybe even to the finals. That deep disappointment will last with them, their parents and the school just because a group of men couldn’t see their way to make an exception on this occasion, maybe issued a fine, and who’d stupidly arranged a schools’ cup rugby game at half-term. I’m in tears of sadness as I type.
Don’t Forget The Onions
Eoin Scolard reckons we are all like onions. Not a bad thing, onions are good for you and tobacco onions delicious and as he says, they have many layers. We have to peel away to get to the heart of living and Eoin gives us great advice and guidance on how to do this.
Negative thoughts are always out there and they want to dominate. If you allow them room they’ll surely take up residence and become hardwired into your everyday thinking. Eoin has a way of coping and he charts his tried and tested theories in his book ‘The Possibility Exists… One Man’s Search For Freedom’.
He confronts these thoughts by visualisation: “I sit down for a minute take a few deep breaths and sense into the lower half of my body. Then I say to myself – I am like an oak tree.” Now he paints a picture round the tree, in a field, maybe a forest, sun shining and it’s warm. Then he takes his particular problem and gives it a name of a cartoon character. “Let’s try Mickey Mouse.” So he writes the offending words on Mickey’s t-shirt ‘I’m not good enough’ for instance. Basically you’re problem is transferred to an external source, you acknowledge the problem, you tell it – “I see you, I know you want my attention but sorry, not today.” Then you go back to concentrate on the oak tree, sense the depth of the earth, the warmth of the sun, the openness of the sky and the vastness of the universe.
As he concentrates on this he notices that Mickey Mouse is getting uncomfortable. He’s getting less and less attention, he’s getting more and more annoyed.
“Putting your focus elsewhere starves the thought of its life energy.” Poor Mickey, you see him and the problem loosing their energy. The unwanted thought gets lighter and lighter and eventually floats up and away.
There’s much more to this way of approaching life but basically it’s a case of taking your negative attitudes and experiences by the scruff of the neck and forbidding them to take root.
Eoin also talks about ‘non-specific unhappiness’, not depression but life getting you down. When he was suffering stress he wasn’t prepared to take the doctors antidepressants instead he went on a quest to get an answer and ended up in Dublin with a fully qualified doctor who is also a homeopath. They talked, and talked. She was honestly interested in him and he responded. “An hour and twenty minutes later I left this wonderful woman feeling much lighter in myself.” He shares what he learned and it’s valuable information.
The author, who lives in Co. Down with his partner Jenny Grainger, also discusses life as it is today putting forward the thesis that the world we live in doesn’t want us to be free to make our own decisions. “It doesn’t want empowered people who refuse to be victims. It actually needs you to be a slave to the consumer culture.….. this fear has spawned greed, anxiety, defensiveness and control. This paradigm needs to crack and crumble and be rebuilt. How? One person at a time.”
Just think back to the fear we felt over the Millennium Bug, mad cow disease, salt, now sugar, and the rest – these negatives just keep coming, like Orwell’s 1984, Big Brother is trying to manipulate and suppress the masses. Eoin has had plenty of negatives to deal with, a bad crash resulting in a near death experience, relationship problems, single parenthood and success and failure in the world of work. No wonder he had a stress related breakdown but all these only made him determined to rebuild and share his experiences, often in a comical way always in a compulsive way.
His take on ‘fear’ being your friend is also fascinating. Turning fear into energy by making a commitment to do something psychologically or emotionally frightening once a week until your courage muscle gets strong and your self-esteem grows. Start with something small you’ve been avoiding like making a phone call you’ve been putting off and building up from there.
Be prepared to be challenged by this book, be prepared to fill in the little exams he sets and keep The Possibility Exists … as a manual to a better life.
