My Hero
The audience at the Grand Opera House last night was two tiered, those of us old enough to have grown up with the music of Buddy Holly and the younger ones who were meeting him for the first time and realising just what a remarkable story this is. Born in 1936, died when he was only 22 and active on the recording scene for only three years. As we heard, those three years produced an outstanding portfolio of hits, far too many to list – Peggy Sue, Oh Boy, True Love Ways, Chantilly Lace, Raining in my Heart – my teenage years with all the joys and heartbreaks came alive. There was laughter and there were tears.
Buddy’s musical life was slow to take off and so was this production, setting the scene and telling the initial story requires a lot of words and the sound was unbalanced and the stage seemed very empty. Most of us had preconceived ideas knowing the story and my vision of Buddy was tall, gangly and thin which wasn’t the case with our young man but he was convincing as he and the Crickets were determined not to be branded a Country ’n Western group and kept plugging away with their rock n’ roll until people began to sit up and take notice. He met the music publishers secretary and married her, rowed with the Crickets, became a solo artist but it didn’t zing along. But, when Buddy changed glasses to the horn rimmed frames which were his trademark, things began to pick up. The second act rocked, all coloured lights and action. We were in the Winter Dance Party show in Iowa, the DJ (Matthew Quinn) whipped the audience up and when the acts came on, we were in a frenzy. The Big Bopper (Thomas Mitchells), Ritchie Valens (Jordan Cunningham) and Buddy Holly (Alex Fobbester). It was terrific. Young and not so young were on their feet singing along, clapping in time and one elderly gentleman was in the aisle giving it plenty of welly!
Again, as in so many recent shows at the Opera House, the cast played all the instruments on stage, sang, danced and acted. This was a great example of multi-skilling at it’s best and the cast were tremendous.

Old Fashioned Round Head Lettuce
Honeymoon salad – lettuce alone! Well by all accounts lettuce is in short supply; in the supermarket yesterday there was a notice ‘only five units per customr’. What would you do with five lettuce anyway? Despite there being umpteen variations on the theme, my favourite is Round Head, lovely loose leaves sold in an open plastic bag, no gas preservatives pumped in and delicious with a few scallions chopped through and a dollop of Helmans. Within the next few weeks the local supply of lettuce will be back on the shelves – hopefully. I talked to Sean Donnelly of Derrylard Nurseries and he’s confident – but as he says there’s a rule of thumb, when the grass grows so do the lettuce so let’s hope for a little warmth and sunshine. I once choked on that straggly type that has no taste and no appealing appearance, what a waste of space. Iceberg is also tasteless but looks pretty and crisp, mixed leaves are slightly better especially the leaf with the peppery taste but give me the old fashioned Round Head every day.
Don’t Suffer In Silence
Why are people reluctant to admit to having mental health issues? After all one in four will experience such problems each year and by 2030 it’s said that globally depression will be the leading illness. It’s more socially acceptable to have a physical ailment, find a lump or break a leg, something you can bandage or actually show to the doctor however, with a mental illness there’s a stigma. Perhaps it’s because in years gone by anyone with severe depression or anti-social tendencies would be locked away, disappear without trace and the language would be cruel, ‘he’s a nut case’ or ‘she’s barking mad’ or ‘a screw loose’. Many people are still advised not to talk about depression in work, it could be noted down on your records and be to your disadvantage in the future.
The ‘shame’ surrounding this subject is being addressed with the help of Prince William, his wife and brother supporting World Mental Health Day, television advertising, the Royal Collage of Psychiatrists campaigns like No Health Without Mental Health, encouragement is to talk about the illness out loud and take that shame away, it’s not surprising that depression and anxiety is causing such concern the way things are going, it’s easy to get down over the news not only here in Northern Ireland but also in London where the future of the UK is bound up with Brexit, horrible word for a horrible situation. And then there’s the US of A. At this point words fail me.
But getting down about a situation isn’t why I was talking to Michelle Francis-Naylor when I visited the Galgorm Private Clinic. At one time mental health was treated from the top down. Doctors told the patient what was wrong, prescribed pills, recommended a day centre while friends said count your blessings. Not helpful. Today that has turned on it’s head. There’s more talking and listening to the patient and their unique situation, a major improvement is the Recovery Colleges in every Trust area where ‘recovery’ is the important word. These colleges offer people educational courses and workshops to help them examine their lives, their relationships, their emotions and become experts in their own self-care working towards achieving their goals and ambition. Courses, which are run by professionals, are open to people affected by mental health difficulties, their family and friends, even professionals in the area can take advantage of extending their knowledge by meeting men and women going through some type of trauma.
“You can still function with depression, indeed mental health issues can lie low for years until something triggers a major reaction then it’s important to talk to a GP and arrange intervention at an early stage. If this happens it usually means there won’t be so many extreme episodes in future.”
Michelle, who is a consultant psychiatrist, explained that referral to Galgorm Private Clinic is by GP, medico-legal services are available for solicitors and home visits can be arranged on request. Emergency assessments are not provided but appointments are arranged within days.
An initial session could take between 60 and 90 minutes at least and at the end a diagnosis will be arrived at and treatment suggested. It’s a sensitive meeting. A patient might be very upset, often crying with relief that someone is listening; some take longer to articulate their situation but with gentle questioning they eventually begin to talk, as in all cases at the clinic, in complete confidence. Patients are only there because they are feeling a desperation to get help.
Do some get aggressive? “Maybe irritable at times, but you have to understand that we are delving into very private areas of the patient’s life. It’s important that people understand we need good physical health to maintain our mental health and vice versa.”

Chilling Tale
Opera House is surely churning out the goods at the moment. Scottish Ballet presented us with Hansel & Gretel last week, full house on opening night and terrific books during the run which ended on Saturday.
What a story, very iffy with a school teacher feeding her children lollipops and spiriting them off into the forest. But let’s start at the very beginning!
Once upon a time there was a town where children began mysteriously disappearing ever since a new teacher arrived at the local school. She told them stories and gave them lollipops and they fell under her spell.
This is not a sugar and spice story, it’s quite frightening at times although often funny and when Scottish Ballet tell the tale we all fall under their spell.
The ballet is a delight and it was lovely to see so many boys and girls enjoying it, I met one young man who is already training in ballet school in England and for a future Olympics and he gave the show the thumbs up. The little girl beside me hardly moved a muscle and held tight onto her mummy when the witch was trying to put Hansel into the oven. I told you, this story has a sinister side to it, after all, it was written by the Grimm Brothers!
Having said that there’s a comic element running through, there were great cheers for the rag dolls who fell out of the toy cupboard, sighs when the Dew Drop Fairy appeared, a holding of breath when the beautiful woman flies in sitting on the crest of the moon and spontaneous clapping and whoops of delight when the wicked witch is pushed into the red hot oven and the spell is lifted and the children return to their parents.
The dancing is up to Scottish Ballet’s usual high standard and the dancers act out their parts as well as taking full advantage of the choreography. The orchestra play Engelbert Humperdinck’s familiar music and the vibrant set is outstanding but as the ginger bread house takes up most of the stage, although we don’t see it until the second act, a lot of the movement was towards the front of the stage in Act 1 so we missed the big sweep of space we’re used to in ballets. But that didn’t detract, when the forest parted to show the front door of the little house and then everything parted to reveal the inside and the fun started.
Congratulations to all involved especially the eight young boys and girls from local ballet schools who never put a foot wrong.
