Week Of Mixed News
Hooray, Honey G was voted off X-Factor. Why did the panel keep telling her how wonderful she was, how they were in love with her and how she’s was a winner no matter what? Poor woman, she was given false hope for a serious future in show business. For me anyway it was good news that the other talented young people are left to sing it out at a high level of ability.
And what is that panel all about. At a time when there is such poverty at home and abroad why are so many television programmes squandering money needlessly. The X-Factor panel say precisely nothing if you listen carefully. They seem to have three scripts and they rotate these week after week, you nailed it, you owned the stage, let me tell you, this is what x-factor is all about, etc. etc. Their arrogance is pitiful. It’s scandalous that they are payed money, waited on hand and foot, have boot camps in their own homes or some exotic place in the sun – it’s been suggested to me that for the months of December no prizes of big cars, fabulous holidays, cash and the rest should be donated to help children. Children in Need do a good job and are well regulated but look at those little children in refugee camps fighting for their lives, malnourished and helpless. There’s something wrong with the world.
So many happenings last week, some happy, some hopeful and some dreadful. Happily the Christmas Market has got off to a good start, good weather and happy customers strolling round the stalls.
Seems to be dominated by food and drink but also many little nooks and crannies with unique items just right for Christmas presents. And for children, when it’s not too busy, the chance to enjoy the colour and the different languages which make this again a special place to visit.
Dramatic Rescue Makes The Headlines
Last Wednesday was quite a day. I visited Linzi Rooney in Studio Souk, a delightful shop in Ann Street which stocks an amazing variety of craft and art work all produced here in Northern Ireland, such high quality, colourful and unique.
I was writing the article about Linzi for the Irish News when helicopters began buzzing the slopes of the Cave Hill around McArt’s Fort, often referred to as Napoleon’s Nose although that feature is further along the mountain top. Apparently Jonathan Swift viewed the hill in it’s totality from Holywood and could see the profile very clearly and used this “Giant” in his story of Gulliver’s Travels.
Sadly there is a history of people falling off this peak overlooking the city, so immediately it was obvious that someone was in trouble.
Major Rescue and Two Brave Men
Thankfully two young men out jogging found a coat and a bag, did a bit of urgent research and discovered a 20 year old German student at Queen’s University had taken a tumble which landed her 60 feet down the side of the mountain and into a shallow hole where she lay from Tuesday afternoon until Wednesday afternoon. It was bitterly cold but somehow she managed to survive 25 hours and was eventually airlifted to Royal Victoria Hospital where she was treated for broken bones and I’ve no doubt deep shock. It’s good news that she is recovering.
Richard Lamont and David McCrum took swift action when they found the bag with a student card inside, phoned the university and discovered the girl hadn’t turned up for class that day and there was concern about her whereabouts. The hunt was on and soon the boys heard someone call ‘hello’ and the rescue began. The Coastguard Sikorsky rescue helicopter flew from its base in Prestwick, Scotland and my goodness the skill and patience of the pilot and crew was amazing.
It was obviously difficult to lift the girl but eventually, thanks to the a PSNI search and rescue team, mountain rescue, the ambulance service and fire service, the helicopter left the scene with her on board and sped off towards the Royal Victoria Hospital. Accidents on the mountain always cause alarm, indeed I saw a young man jump last year he too lived and thankfully this most recently incident ended up with the survival of a young woman who had been blown off the edge by a gust of wind. Suggests some sort of a fence should be erected at that exposed spot.
Belfast Telegraph reported the two boys estimated the woman fell around 60ft.

A PSNI spokesman said: “Thank you to the vigilant members of the public who found this girl and stayed with her until help arrived.”
The police gave the following safety advice for those who venture out walking on hills and it also applies if you are going any distance in your car, useful in that case to carry a shovel and a rug as well.
• Tell someone where you are going
• Tell someone when you will be back
• Carry a mobile phone
• Wrap up for the weather conditions
• Carry some food
What Was It?
I was out at the car in the driveway at about 5.45 on Wednesday evening, I looked up at the outline of the Cave Hill and thought about the drama that had unfolded during the late afternoon when, suddenly something very bright travelled across the sky. Think shooting star then make it much bigger with a slightly bulbus head and slow it down a bit and what have you got? A FireBall. My late grandmother saw a fireball back in the 1930s and it was legendary in our family. Now me! How lucky I was, right place, right time.
Being Homeless Is A Dreadful Thing
Imagine sitting on a bit of wet cardboard on a concrete pavement in this bitter weather with the wind biting into you. No one to talk to and nowhere to go, people walking past and not giving you a second look, or if they do it’s a look of distain.
Being homeless is a dreadful thing.
As you walk past in Belfast or Derry, Newry or Newcastle, down and out, cold and hungry, what do you think? They must have done something to get themselves into this situation? They really do have money but they are scrounging? Perhaps you should think, there but for the grace of God because these days it’s easy to end up on the streets.
Shelter NI say they receive a call to its Helpline every 30 seconds throughout the year, economic changes affecting a wide range of people up and down the country and up and down the income scale. The Simon Community also report similar figures, I talked to a young woman on their Helpline at about 9.30 in the morning and you could hear the buzz in the background and she was almost breathless with the volume of callers, 33,000 in the last 12 months. It only takes an illness, cut back in hours worked or the loss of a job for people to spiral into homelessness, maybe debt, drugs and mental health issues. Take the example of a couple and their young family living in rented accommodation. Everything looked well for the future but suddenly the landlord announces he’s selling his property and your tenancy agreement has come to an end. It takes time to find a new place, Christmas is coming and your life is in shreds because, through no fault of your own, you are homeless. 120,000 children nationwide are set to wake up on Christmas morning in a B&B, a hostel or in shared accommodation, no decorations, no presents and it’s likely that the experience will affect these children, the fear, the uncertainty, loss of self esteem and confidence, their parents in a state of despair.
You think I’m exaggerating? Talk to the charities who try, and succeed, to help ease the fear and hopelessness of these homeless people.
Talk also to the individuals who make it their business to go and help, small groups who tour the streets at night to offer hot drinks, some food and warm clothing.
Rowan Hand is one such. Known the length and breath of the Newry area, in Dublin and Belfast, even in India and Africa. This man, journalist, broadcaster, radio producer in both RTE and BBC, has boundless energy for others, vulnerable men, women and children.
Recently at the St. Martin Novena he requested an appeal for warm coats expecting a few would be handed in for those in need. “We got 2000! Too many to store but the headmaster of St. Coleman’s offered us the space and the boys took charge and sorted and Felim Convery of Newry Lions Club got them to Dublin.” The need in Dublin is very great. Brother Kevin Crowley and his band of Capuchin monks have been running a homeless centre in the city for 50 years, however it was only three years ago that Rowan discovered the charity. “I wasn’t in a good place myself, had to look beyond myself and in this centre I met people in dire straights up to 400 coming for food in the morning, 500 for a meal in the evening. Some were trying to save money so they could pay their rent, most were broken but they don’t tick the box for help from any other organisation. They also get a shower and clothing but sadly, many go back out on to the street, but they are never turned away even if they come back.” Brother Kevin runs a strictly non-judgemental programme since the day a woman arrived in a big car looking for food. “One of the volunteers said, why give to her, look at the car she’s driving implying she was a sponger. Brother Kevin went out to the car where she showed him inside, there were two young children and all she owned. “We live here, this is our home, my life is in bits.” It was a lesson to everyone.
But Rowan goes a step further. He gets involved, sits down with young men and women and talks to them, wades into situations would others would run, he’s a grandfather figure to many of the young ones, they can talk to him and he will sooth them and give gentle advice and help.
“Homelessness is a disease of the developed world,” he maintains. “Where I work in India and Africa, community is important and compact, no one goes without a roof over their head.”
The Simon Community have the same ethos. They have 22 ‘projects’ in Northern Ireland, an emergency number, and somewhere warm and welcoming for young people, families, ex-offenders and those with addictions, or those with mental health issues; they even work with animal shelters to look after the dogs of the homeless. They are not hostels where people tend to come and go, in this case ‘clients’ have a written agreement with the charity and are accepted for 72 hours which can be extended to 28 days; during that time Simon will help them by contacting a support worker to talk them through their problems, offer mediation services and advice on getting employment and their own accommodation. They help over 2000 people every year working without judgement to support people who are or are at risk of becoming homeless. They ask for public support through helping with their Shoebox appeal for food and toiletries. When clients come in with a bin bag they’ll receive a rucksack with a shoebox welcome pack and new hope for their future.
