Major Tim Peake, European Space Agency Astronaught will be holding court in the Ulster Hall on Tuesday as part of the annual NI Science Festival of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It runs until 28th February 2016.

I’m really bored with Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield and their giggling. Perhaps it’s just because someone put up six or seven minutes of ‘The Best of …..” on Face Book. The double entendre are sometimes amusing but they are beginning to dominate and it’s unprofessional when their inane laughter goes on and on.
That brings me to Ulster Television and the crocodile tears being shed over the take over by ITV. My heart goes out to the employees who are so dreadfully effected, many of them my friends and it’s devastating but it’s no surprise that our local station has disappeared. What a mess has been made and don’t tell me there was no money to make good programmes from Northern Ireland.
There hasn’t been an Ulster Television for a long time. When it was established in 1959 it was truly local, what ever was happening in the Province was reflected on the screen be it sport, education, religion or entertainment, fashion and farming too and apart from film, everything was live.
I remember the day we had two prima ballerinas in tutus dancing in one corner of the studio and six newly born lambs in the other and live advertisements in the middle of the programme. I remember the half hour Irish music programmes with the top singers, musicians and dancers and in a set which looked more like a pub than most of our pubs. There were live debates on everything from the fur trade to etiquette to politics, medical series from our hospitals with top men and women taking part.
There was no limit. And many programmes made in the Belfast studios were snapped up by the network – Harry Seacome featuring in Highway for instance.
No matter who was appearing in Belfast, they stopped off at the studios at Havelock House – Tom Jones, Adam Faith, Lulu, Jerry Lee Lewis, meeting Oliver Reid on the back stairs and George Best in make-up. Paisley and Fitt fighting it out on the teatime programme and then chatting away as Sheila or Connie took off their Toasted Beige foundation! Surprising how so many well known men slipped off with their makeup in place! And so it went on over 57 years but things were changing as time went on.
Of course things change in business, and the bottom line has always been that this television company was a business, so gradually the organisation became more streamlined, equipment changed, life moved at a faster pace but there was always the local slant between network programmes. I recall one colleague saying that some day UTV would become a relay station, no studios just news and sport coverage, a sprinkling of politics and weather forecasting. That prediction was made over 30 years ago and I laughed but his words have come home to roost. It wasn’t a shock when new management arrived from London last week with their ‘View For The Future’ but it was received with despair as the staff watched the new logo being screwed into position on the building and preparations for it to be on tomorrow. All ITV style in future, minimal, one size fits all! Thankfully Pamela Ballantine will still be with us on Friday nights, there’ll be a truncated news and, praise the Lord, a ‘View from Stormont’ on Mondays!

UTV hasn’t been a truly local station for some time and now this streamlining has finally kicked in and surely it’s as streamlined as it can possibly be. As an amateur breeder and the registered seed merchant in Northern Ireland, she is special. Her business is to preserve native plants species on the island of Ireland by saving their seeds.
It’s not just wild flowers, vegetables, fruit, trees, bushes and with support from a variety of organisations, not least Kew Gardens Millennium Seed Bank who help store True Harvest Seeds, Debbie and her colleagues are rapidly establishing a long term home base.
I was delighted when she invited me to accompany her to Oxford Island on a seed collecting day. I thought this was the optimum time of year, harvest and all that, so she surprised me by telling me she starts early in the season collecting ivy seeds in February!
But there’s a word of caution. Everyone working for the charity True Harvest must get the landowners permission before collecting. “Even the shore line is owned by someone so it’s not just a matter of going off and gathering seeds, every one has to be carefully sourced and recorded before they find a permanent home; they are all tested for stability, uniformity and suitable with many of the samples grown at Our growing out is going to be done by True Harvest Seeds at our field site production unit in Kilclief, Co Down starting in 2017, where long term volunteers will be recruited to help before they are stored or released to the public or organisations.”
The charity works closely with government departments, environmental groups and councils. It’s a complex business. Area surveys are undertaken, collecting has to be at the right time then the material brought back to Strangford to be dried and prepared for long term storage at -20C. But it’s vital that we hold in trust the thousands of native plants that are so exclusive to our island. There are 1400 species of wild plants in Ireland and over 32 counties that’s a lot of collecting!”
There are over 70 trained volunteers to help in this task and a seed saving kit available for school projects, all vitally important as seeds, when properly collected and prepared for storage can last up to and over 200 years. The celebration is that Advice NI has been able to help so many people thought the years, their centres see about 150,000 people each year, generally those who have lost employment, been made redundant or are on welfare benefits. “And we haven’t even seen the welfare reforms come in yet; from next month they’ll be reassessing 5000 Disability Living Allowance claims every month for the next 18 months and it’s expected that 20% of disabled people currently on DLA will no longer qualify or will receive a reduced entitlement, many of them having mental health problems. The Personal Independent Payment which will replace DLA promise to be more stringent when examining the physical and mental conditions of those claiming.”
So is Bob, who has been with the charity for 21 years, optimistic about the future? He has no hesitation. ‘Pessimistic. I’ve seen so many different schemes come and go and none of them really work. To be honest we just don’t have enough jobs of the right sort and on top of that the system is so complex. The problem is the bureaucracy that people have to go through to claim; we monitored one claim and it took up to 80 days to be processed and it went through around 38 to 40 pairs of hands, we must streamline this.”

“I’d abolish the social security system and I’d give every single adult a universal basic income, a certain amount of money for them and for their children and I would stop means testing people. It’s been tried out in places like Holland, parts of the US and Canada and there’s a growing call for it here.”
The question is, what as a society have we done over the last 21 years to improve our situation? Certainly Advice NI have done a lot and made a difference but it seems they are facing an every growing problem.
