Rushing through in time for the Archer’s Omnibus – can hardly bear what going at the moment, that horror of a man Rob, no wonder the actor is having a bad time in everyday life! Radio is really brilliant and my choice over television – except for Victoria tonight, even Holby City and its like are wearing thin. News is an essential but radio coverage is so much better as there is time to go into detail and with Five Live it’s so up to date it’s sometimes ahead of itself. Also you can get on with lots of other things at the same time; with television the room is smaller with the wireless you own all four corners.
My Literary Hero
Later today on Radio 4 at 4 p.. I’ll be listening to De Profundis: Oscar Wilde’s Letter Inside read by Stephen Rea. The most beautiful and poignant writing from Reading Goal. The Ballad of Reading Gaol is my preference:

Local Talent
Congratulations to Pamela Ballantine who has moved to peak time on Fridays when UTV Life fills the coveted 8 p.m. slot. It has been a delight to watch her establish this programme which, thankfully, has escaped the chop with the new regime.
Pamela was one of the guests at the launch of Belfast on a Plate at the City Hall during the week.
If ever a book was a culinary delight then it’s Belfast On A Plate, it’s so succulent you could almost eat it!
For years David Pauley of The Studio planned to produce a book featuring city restaurants and highlighting our talented chefs and when he talked to journalist Joanna Braniff about the idea, she jumped on board.

Together David, his partner Cheryl Johnston, Joanna and The Studio, have produced a wonderful book which covers aspects of 20 of our restaurants, the chefs, the history of the buildings and a whole collection of exciting recipes. Commercial photographer David Pauley and his partner Cheryl are responsible for many of the creative images we see in magazines, brochures and advertising campaigns but David’s passion is food photography and this new book has been his dream come true. Amongst other publications, he and his colleagues at The Studio have illustrated The Mourne Seafood Cook Book and Paula McIntyre’s Down To Earth Cook Book so he knows his business inside and out! In fact he has a fully equipped kitchen in his studio where he works alongside top chefs and food stylists to produce photographs to make the mouth water.
The birth of his latest book is a labour of love hasn’t happened overnight, the planning goes back several years.
Once he and Cheryl agreed a concept, they approached the chefs and over a period of time they had meetings to discuss their work, selecting which signature dishes to highlight and then setting up a photoshoot. It’s a long and arduous job because photographing food is difficult, the lighting is all important so the dish looks attractive and has life about it otherwise it would be dull and unappetising.
“We move in as a team setting up, making sure the food is displayed properly maybe on a plate or perhaps a skillet, the colours must be attractive and the all important lighting set correctly.”
Then Joanna Braniff was asked to write the background to the restaurants, Paul Rankin agreed to pen the foreword, David’s son Dean, a graphic designer in London, worked on the layout of the pages and staff at the Studio helped bring it all together between two hard covers.
Is he pleased with the result? Is it a dream come true?
“I’m delighted to put Belfast on a Plate for the public to enjoy and to celebrate the work of some of our top chefs.”
This is not only about eating out in Belfast and the local produce used but stories about the restaurants themselves, some that have been converted and others that are new builds. Fascinating is the background of James St South serving diners in a re-vamped linen mill, Neill’s Hill on the site of a railway station in East Belfast, Howard Street with its front doors salvaged from a Christian Brothers School and Tedfords still retains many of the outward signs of maritime history and its ship chandler business in the 1800s.
It’s a timely publication as this is Northern Ireland Year of Food and the perfect time to blow our own trumpet and Belfast On A Plate is without doubt a total brass band of the highest calibre. It’s a lot of work and an expensive business when you’re putting your own money into the venture but all the signs are good and with a team like this I’d be surprised if we didn’t have a second and third volume extending to Ulster On The Plate.

Now he’s turned his talents to his first novel and he has employed the same meticulous research to this complex story, full of twists and turns as the story unravels at high speed. “I was fortunate to have a brother-in-law in the Flying Squad before he retired and his sister was in the drugs squad – a good start!”
It took four years to complete the book, he was producing television programmes at the same time, and there are four more to come, maybe a film after that. John admits he’s floating on air at the moment and delighted with the positive reviews Standstill is getting.
