Will it horrify the politicians into action? Remember the pictures of the three year old whose body was washed up on a Turkish beach – did that make any difference?
We have become inured to the bloody horror of war, the greed behind bombardment and the helplessness to save children like Omran.
I was saddened to read of the death of Bishop Edward Daly.
We first met in the Foyle Hospice where he was on one of his regular visits and I was researching for an article. We talked for a while and he invited me to come and visit so we could chat some more. I didn’t need to be asked twice and it wasn’t long before I was taking tea with him in his terracotta painted house, a promise of the warm glow within its wall.
Just as I had imagined, the Bishop worked surrounded by books; many religious, one shelf devoted entirely to Bibles of all sorts, but also books on theatre, travel, sport – subjects of great variety reflecting his wide interest in life in general. Betty, his is loyal housekeeper brought tea and biscuits into his study and a marmalade cat stalked in, took one look at me and left in a hurry but despite this I was made most welcome! Just like his library, our conversation covered many aspects of life and people. He told me how he was born and brought up in Belleek during the war years when Christmas presents didn’t need batteries and there was a lot of fun with his parents, his brother and three sisters. “Christmas was simple,” he recalled. “Just holly, turkey and midnight mass.” He talked of Derry. “A special place. I have unbounded admiration for the people and the way they have restored Derry and created a whole new life, reinvested in business and re-established the city as the important place it is. And children are growing up in a more secure environment, childhood is now enjoyed to the full. The Hospice is a good example of co-operation between all of us.” he added. “It is totally supported by people who are enormously kind and generous.”
Over the years I often called in to say hello as I journey through to Donegal and I gained so much from our conversations. We trusted each other with our thoughts and prayers and like so many others today I mourn his passing. I wish I had kept his emails to me commenting on articles and more often than not on theatre reviews. He loved theatre and his pantomime productions were booked out every year yet he never wanted a stage for himself, his audience only saw and appreciated him within the setting of the church he loved so much. What he witnessed on Bloody Sunday and how he helped carry young Jackie Duddy after he was short dead and the distress of the personal legacy it left, took it’s toll but as he said himself, he wasn’t one to look back, rather to look forward. I will look back with gratitude for his advice and friendship and look forward, knowing I met and admired a very special man.

Lighthouse Beaming Out Joy and Developing Potential
The Lighthouse Trust Summer School was in full swing when I eventually called to see the students in their Donaghadee home. It was their 20th birthday and the cake was cut by Thomas Bruton who has been there from day one and whose mother Joan is the driving force behind this remarkable organisation. Children and young people from all over Ireland come here to work with teacher therapists known as conductors, (each has graduated from the Peto Institute in Budapest), and assistants and the pupils all have one thing in common they have special needs, they have cerebral palsy.
In their summer school held at the Parish Centre on the outskirts of Donaghadee, I saw such stimulation for the young pupils, with at least one assistant alongside, they followed the instruction of the conductor, singing, miming, throwing and laughing. Last month older children cooked and baked not just for pleasure but because they have to make a note of the ingredients, go shopping, use the money wisely, even the kneading of the dough is a therapy to use fingers that otherwise would stiffen up.
One of the assistants talked of the progress he sees year by year, how one of his young charges was able to take off his jumper by himself this year, an impossibility 12 months ago.
I was lucky enough to sit beside Janice McKee whose 12 year old son Nathan has been attending for six years. Janice is a district nurse on duty overnight so she’s with her son most of the day working alongside her husband, the family and carers. Funding is difficult, finding equipment expensive but thanks to friends who held a fund raising events, Nathan now has a beach wheelchair and can now go on holiday and enjoy the sand and the sea and although we live in Ballynahince we bring our caravan to Donaghadee so we will be nearby the school and take full advantage of the therapies and we can enjoy a family holdiay.”
The chair cost £3,000. “Add a nought to most things, a bike coasting £80 for a disabled child would be more like £800.”
She explained what it’s like having a child with special and severe needs.
“The majority of children with cerebral palsy are non-verbal, but I can make contact with Nathan but only when he wants to cooperate. Here at the summer school he is reacting to the therapists all the time because they make it fun and keep going over and over certain movements in such a way that it’s stimulating and of course being with other children there’s a level of competition, peer pressure! For four weeks, from 9.30 until 5.30 p.m. he attends class and has a nourishing lunch between session. This gives me some respite and peace of mind which isn’t normally possible. We parents learn too,” she added. “When I told Marianne that Nathan has a TV set in the corner of his bedroom, she advised me to move it so he had to turn himself round to get a good view and so use his muscles, advice like this is invaluable.”
Janice admits she live for the day because looking ahead is traumatic. Nathan has been at Fleming Fulton since he was two years old but once he reaches 19 life takes on an unknown quality. “What happens next is an unknown, it’s impossible to plan ahead, one day at a time.”
