Surely the most pleasing this about the Olympics is the wonderful silver medal won by the O’Donovan brothers. Paul and Gary not only brought home the first every Rowing medal for Ireland but they obviously have captured the hearts of everyone, what a double act! The are so funny, dry sense of humour, their interviews with RTE are legend, Asking the interviewer “What’s the craic”, not knowing the time of the start of their race, lamenting missing the party at home in Skibbereen, telling how they got to wear the podium pants for the medal ceremony after having to wee into a cup. What a breath of fresh air.

A week of Olympics which just got more exciting as it played out especially as I’ve said, with the brilliant O’Donovan brothers.
The commentators has been criticised for being partisan – why not? They cover the competitors races and games very fairly I think and then they get really excited when one of the GB sports men or women wins, I think that’s fair enough. I loved Matt Baker with the athletics, he got really carried away. He was a junior British gymnast and sports acrobatics champion but was forced to give up after being diagnosed with anaemia aged 14 so he knows his onions.
So it’s another week of ‘I gave it my best’, ‘I’ve worked hard for this’, ‘It’s been a long time coming’, cheers to Sir. Bradley Wiggins who actually gave a brilliant post Gold medal interview with his three mates, he was funny, informative and justifiably proud. What a star, he does work hard, he does give it his best shot and he doesn’t mind making a funny face of joy during the national anthem. I find it difficult to make out what people are saying in their post race interview and I’m sure I’m not the only one but then they are out of breath, still in their racing zone so they speak so fast and come from so many different parts of the country, including our two brothers from Cork were terrific, at least I could understand them but I bet most of the GB viewers couldn’t make head or tail of it! Well done to them, they were brilliant and just wanted to go off and celebrate, and have a feed of steak and spuds!
But I am really impressed by the commentators.
Sir Steve Redgrave despite his apparent bust up with John Inverdale just kept talking when he was required to – like the delectable Chris Hoy, no matter who he was with the was able to fill in with really interesting information. Well, I succumbed. I looked up Naked Attraction and got a full frontal view of this strange television programme. I have a theory. I think men and women meet at about 11.30 in the morning, sit round a big oval table and are served cucumber sandwiches and green tea as they try to dream up the most outlandish programme ideas. I bet someone said, “What about a dating game but with everyone naked back to basics, selection not arrived at by dint of personality or good looks but the size and hang of the bits and pieces that go to make up our bodies.” “They’ll never accept it,” another will say. “Let’s try it, enough publicity and it’s a winner, young people will lap it up.”
What did I think of Naked Attraction. if you didn’t laugh you’d cry, I thought it was just juvenile, show me yours and I’’ show you mine sort of thing. Not clever, challenging, nor entertaining – it has none of the attributes I look for in a television programme. Am I a prude? To old to appreciate well built men with the bits hanging down? Maybe but certainly I don’t applaud those who had come up with such a desperate idea for television audiences. I watched because of curiosity and isn’t that what happens to young people, and older people too, when they go into porn sites and become hooked? Wondering what’s it all about and one thing leads to another.
It surprises me also that the storylines in EastEnders and Coronation Street seem to run hand in glove. I was once told the team of script writers are the same for both soaps but I doubt that but it’s strange how the storylines are so similar.
