Last week I was hacked.  Many of my Face Book friends came through to me to say I was offering them info. on how to make money.  These were not from me and although it is now fixed, please DON’T be taken in, if you re asked to be my friend please don’t respond.

I was heart broken on Wednesday watching the State Opening of Parliament.  Four page boys waiting at the robing room door ready to take the Queen’s train as she walked through the splendour to the thrown.  Then suddenly the little blond boy was being gently escorted to the side and out of sight leaving the other three to cope with the long heavy train.  Poor child, presumably taken unwell and missing his proudest moment let alone the worry his family will have had watching and worried sick.  What a shame he wasn’t able or allowed to come out at the end when her Maj was saying goodbye to everyone before getting into the lift although she didn’t appear to acknowledge the little boys who did so well.

As I type I’m sipping from my Smoothy.  Loving this breakfast habit, it’s cutting down on toast and it’s pleasant to take time preparing – apples, pears, banana, kiwi fruit and orange.  A couple of scoops of porridge oats, squeeze of honey and a dash of cinnamon.  A whizzing delight.  But one thing I’ve discovered.  Recently on the Internet something caught my eye, apples being covered with hot water and a horrible white waxy material peeling off the fruit.  Whatever this preservative is it’s not desirable.  I was always brought up to eat the skins of apples and potatoes and I suppose they were always washed by someone but biting into a juicy Granny Smith is a thing of the past, now everything is peeled.  I experimented during the week, put some apples into a bowl and poured hot water on top and sure enough there was a little white residue on the surface.  Different story when they are picked straight from the tree.

For the same reason of preservation, I now buy ’round’ lettuce rather than the bagged stuff.  These are in an open bag so the air can get in and around them, and they look as if they have just been picked freshly out of the ground.  When you open a sealed lettuce I get a whiff of gas. Apparently this is the modern method of keeping the leaves fresh!  Not very nice to think about.

Thursday morning dawned bright and clear and I was off to visit a mini empire on the fringes of Ballynahinch to meet a young entrepreneur. Ryan Bogues, who has Downes Syndrome, has been hitting the headlines since winning a Youth and Future Talent Award but it wasn’t long before I discovered that the story behind the story is the real story, a ‘back story’ as they call it on X Factor.
Along Drumnaconagher Road I came on colourful signs welcoming me to the ‘Ponderosa’ and there was Ryan’s Cookie Box filled with packets of homemade cakes, all you do is stop the car, selected what you want and leave the appropriate money in the honest box.
Sitting in the kitchen of his home in the heart of the Co. Down countryside, bluebells and whinn bushes all round, two cats and roaming hedgehogs in attendance, I met the family minus David and Nicki who now work and live away from ‘the mothership’ as Hazel Bogues call her happy home. Joe was digging out foundation for his daughter Laura’s new shed where she will study and write. Ryan already has his garden room for private time researching houses for sale, not because he wants to move, just because be has a fascination for property.
At the hub is Hazel and over a cup of tea, one of Ryan’s chocolate cookies and with the smell of baking all around, the five of us sat and talked. I felt accepted when Ryan came over and gave me a hug. “He’s totally good,” his mum said when her son left the room. “Good and loving but human – he can be a wee rascal! He’s very logical,” she added, “if you’re ever holding interviews he can tell you to good guys immediately.”
Because Ryan was born with Downes Syndrome, it’s been a struggle for his parents as they endeavoured to put this fine young man into the best educational situation. “Having a brass neck doesn’t come easily but when your’e fighting for your child you’ll go the extra mile.”
When Ryan was born 21 years ago, Joe and Hazel were determined he would have every advantage available. After primary school the battle began with authorities who wanted to assist the young man into special needs schooling.
They fought the Board and won but it took strength and courage. “On meeting one prospective teacher she was very offhand, ‘How do you explain to Ryan what a ilbig condenser is?’ She was just putting up obstructions so my attitude was, your loss guys. Teachers and their approach is so important. In Holy Family Primary headmaster Denis Cahill said: ‘Ryan we look forward to welcoming you here to P1.’ and P4 teacher Anne Monaghan started him on the road to helping charities. When he moved to secondary, to Rowallane Integrated College as it was then, the principle Olwen Griffith welcomed him with open arms. When I talked to Olwen initially she admitted she’d didn’t know much about Downes Syndrome but she said, let’s give it a go. I just thought you’re the girl for me.” The downside was the Board wouldn’t provide a classroom assistant for Ryan so the Bogues paid for one themselves with Hazel filling in when she wasn’t working.
There’s no doubt this family have ploughed a furrow for others. They didn’t give in to bureaucracy, they researched the situation, worked with the Downs Syndrome Association and a solicitor from Independent Parental Special Education Advice (IPSEA), a national charity providing free legally based advice to families who have children with special educational needs or disabilities.
As a result they’ve a young man with a business, involved in sourcing the material for his baking, buying packaging from China, counting the money and dealing with the bank and it’s all done with colour and humour.
When the door of the honesty box opens a little quirky voice sings, ‘Do you want to by a cookie?’ There are fairy lights all round and bright signs amongst the last of the daffodils. “Not only do people leave the right money, but usually a little extra because it’s for charity. And sometimes we get presents, yesterday someone left a boomarang and a couple of days ago we had a note from a lady saying she was having a hard time and Ryan’s Cookies had brightened her day.”
Our conversation is halted every now and again by “Oh Quick” as Hazel dashes to the oven to take out another batch of chocolate brownies or succulent scones. “We work together because there’s such a demand. I’m Ryan’s helper! “

What a lovely time of year, a yellow time with the last of the daffodils and the laburnum blossom not to mention the vibrant whinn bushes as I saw in Co. Down.  Not quite time to stop and smell the roses, but time to watch out for the sunshine on the yellow blossoms, next it will be the purple of lilac, the end of the bluebells.

I was expecting much from the author of ‘The Holy Holy Bus’, a play that impressed and entertained me greatly. Was I disappointed in the premier of his latest offering? Initially ‘As The Tide Ebbs’ by Pearse Elliott seemed slow and chaotic, two alcoholic friends, Fuzzy and Shasu, bantering about old times, paramilitary types, Shasu slick and bombastic and Fuzzy a shambles of a human being, here in his council house living in squalor but he’s proud of what he’s got, puts up with what he hasn’t got – a flushing toilet, oil for heating, an empty grate. Despite this the one room we see has become Hotel California, a place where people come and go, where drink flows and drugs are part of the party, where you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.
Into this uneasy party comes a stranger, a young man with a purpose, but what is his purpose?
The interaction between Fuzzy (Billy Clarke), Shasu (Marty Maguire) and Wishy (Michael Liebmann) soon settled on opening night and the relationship between them found a rhythm. There are very funny moments as the play gains momentum, one was when the three break into the American folk song, ‘Take the Load off Fanny’, they sing well as they send it up, all the time guzzling the alcohol. As Fuzzy says, you take a drink then the drink takes you.
Very gradually the comedy turns to the tragedy of past deeds and as the three men stand motionless, forming a triangle on stage, the truth comes out, we understand what the title means and As The Tide Ebbs becomes a gripping piece of drama. Some will say too long, too rambley, I say the writing and the production is well paced and powerful.
Was I disappointed at the end of the evening? No, I was impressed.
As the Tide Ebbs is a joint production by Rawlife Theatre Company and the Lyric Theatre Belfast and is directed by Martin McSharry with set design by Niall Rea.
