What A Week It Was
I’m still reeling. Last week was something special and will live on long in the memory. Forgive me for showing off but it’s not everyday you’re invited to Buckingham Palace to meet Prince William! Way back in November I received a letter inviting me to accept an MBE for services to journalist, broadcasting and to the public of Northern Ireland. Well, blow me down. I did think about it for about 30 seconds, when you’ve had a charmed life, enjoyed your work and got paid for it it seems strange to get a prize as well. I’m glad I said ‘Yes Thank You.’
After a flurry of preparation the day came last Tuesday. Monday was travelling to London and here a big thank you to the ladies and gentle at both Belfast City and Heathrow airports for their assistance – having a lot of pain from a second knee replacement in 12 months a wheelchair was an essential, they were friendly and efficient as they swept me through. With my husband, son and daughter we braved the tube and arrived at the Reform Club in Pall Mall in time to get freshened up and ready for dinner.
I was so hyped about getting to the Palace by 9 am we were staying as close as possible and this marvellous gentlemen’s club was an eye opener. I love the fact that some of the members were a bit iffy about women on the premises and Susie and I got a few sideways looks. Alan and Michael fitted in better! But it was yet another experience to be enjoyed and remembered and certainly the architecture inside was breathtaking.
Next morning was fine and dry and we arrived at the gates at 9.15 am, admitted about 9.30 after meeting some of the other ‘recipients’ and their families and then in through the archway into the inner quadrangle and under the portico into the palace. It was thrilling to walk the walk of so many important people from round the world who visit the Queen and it will be lovely to see future pictures of people mounting the steps we took on Tuesday although it has to be said before we got to the doorway we had to process round the edge of the middle which is covered in tiny stones so not to be disturbed them with tramping feet and needing to be raked again!
The Palace is amazing, the staff so welcoming and eventually processing through to the ballroom to meet and chat to Prince William was truly exciting. What a dish! We talked about my writing, he asked me about working for the World Service and onto a conversation about travelling in the Third World and then it was over.

Complete with my honour on my left bosom we headed for the Ritz for a real treat – luncheon! A beautiful round table in a prominent place, my brother and his wife and son waiting for us and when we walked in they jumped up and ran to meet us and there was hugs and kisses and congratulations – you can imagine, it brought the dining room to a standstill – not easy to do in this plush old school establishment but we managed. From there on in the waiters were round us like they’d never met happy people before and wanted to share our excitement.
That was the bones of the week we enjoyed. A one off and to be savoured.
Spring Concert Raises More Than The Roof
Last night was another highlight. I had the pleasure of compering the Spring Concert held at Campbell College in Belfast in aid of two charities, Brain Injury Matters and Reconnect, both offering those with acquired brain injuries help to rebuild their lives and return to as active a life as possible.
Two dozen young teenagers, pupils at Strathearn school opened the programme and their singing was truly beautiful, their final song was ‘Here On These Branches’ by American contemporary writer Sarah Quartel which tells the quirky tale of a young girl who wanders into forest and is mesmerised by the bird song to such an extent that she wishes to become a bird and join them on the branches of the tree – and her wish comes true. The Patience Family followed, harp music, flute and tin whistle and then the D Men, the famous Donaghadee Male Voice Choir with their conductor Ivan Black. Talk about raising the high roof of the grand hall, stirring stuff but also gentle songs like ‘The Rose’ made famous by Bette Middler.

The first time I met Sheila Taylor was the summer of 2002. Her story amazed me then and it amazes me even more now.
If I tell you she was given up for dead after a car accident in February 1996, spent ten months in hospital, had 56 fractures, a torn liver, a spleen so destroyed it had to be removed, damage to arteries around her heart and her eye came out of its socket you to will marvel at her courage. Thanks to the expertise of the surgeons and doctors, her eye was saved and her body was literally put together again but they said she couldn’t expect her to walk again. Sheila had other ideas! The consultant was dumbfounded when, five months after the crash, she struggled out of bed and accompanied him on his ward round.
Her recovery was difficult and painful and although she refers to herself as Sheila-the-Wreck, this is a lady who doesn’t entertain failure. In 2002 I suggested she should write a book about her experience and how she tackled the resulting disabilities and now she has although she’s been wise enough to wait for the intervening years which have been packed with adventure, no wonder the book’s title is Daringly Disabled – The Adventures of Sheila-the-wreck!
Last year, when she came back from holiday in Majorca, she was feeling well prepared to put pen to paper and in two months she had written a witty and exciting book. The proceeds will be given to the Bangor and North Down Samaritans where she has been a volunteer for 18 years, on duty twice a week, in charge of the Rota and dealing with e-mails and phone calls from members of the public in distress. The rest of the week she’s working in the Bay View Resource Centre in Bangor or driving her limousine around Holywood meeting and greeting her many friends. “I resisted at first but it has changed me life.” Her limousine is in fact a motorised scooter with a big shamrock on the back and it offers the ability to get out and about locally and further afield using the train.
“Life is too fast in a car,’ she says, “Look at me, I’ve no parking problems, I can drive along the sea front and watch the children flying kites, people taking dogs for a walk, people being happy and I can stop for a chat when I want too. I‘ve always tried hard not to grow old, even that horrific car crash couldn’t stop my independence!” A youthful outlook on life and a fierce determination not to let her disability stop her in her tracks has resulted in a life of adventure despite the fact that she has no heels and no ankles and four disabled limbs, has coped with cancer and hearing difficulties, she says she waddles and calls herself Sheila the Wreck. No one else does. I think she’s Sheila the Magnificent ready for anything despite the pain and the morphine patches.
It might take three hours to accomplish the trek to the great wall of China with her son Mark and her guide Peter pulling her wheel chair right up the mountain so she could stand by the wall but she did it. Determined to go white water rafting in New Zealand and enduring a two hour coach journey to a farm in Auckland to go horse riding didn’t faze her. “They’d dug a ditch and the horse stood in it so I was level with the saddle and could climb on board and canter with the best of them”.
Remarkably she has been a sailor on the Tall Ships taking her turn with the abled bodied, washing porthole windows with vinegar and newspaper, hosing the deck and coiling the ropes. “We were wheelies and wobblies! A mix of physically less abled, abled bodied and crew and we worked well together.” She expressed a desire to go up to the crows nest on the Lord Nelson, considered trying on her own but realised it wouldn’t be possible and, as usual, there were willing helpers who hoisted her up. “Once I got there it was lovely, everyone clapped and cheered.”
This woman has gone swimming on the back of an elephant, snorkelled in Cuba, explored Lapland, Canada and Alaska. In India she took the dangerous Tiger Trail and she went paragliding in Tunisia – it would seem nothing daunts her.
She books hotels where there will be plenty of activity, lots of families and young children full of confidence and enthusiasm. She loves a beer and she delights in sitting with a drink and filling in her diary.
“I don’t look back, what’s the point, I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’m a new person now, thankful that I’m as able as I am. I’m content.”
When she was trying to get up to the crows nest on a Tall Ship sailing round the Canary Islands and lamenting she couldn’t do it without help, the captain told her, ‘To have tried and failed is success to fail to try is failure.’
Without doubt success is the daringly disabled Sheila Taylor.
