I just loved the short series ‘The Real Marigold Hotel’ with the actress Miriam Margolyes OBE, dancer Wayne Sleep OBE, actor Sylvester McCoy, comedian Roy Walker, chef Rosemary Shrager, darts champion Bobby George, singer Patti Boulaye OBE and former news reader Jan Leeming.   For three weeks they lived a fairly difficult life in Jaipur India to see if they would consider spending their retirement on the other side of the world amongst the colour and warmth and cheap living.   The majority said yes, Bobby George even flew his wife out to look at property.  Jan Leeming was really hooked and I hope she does find fulfilment and tranquility there for a few months every year, such a beautiful and sad woman with a wardrobe so colourful and elegant.   I’ve interviewed both Wayne Sleep and Rosemary Scrager, Rosemary was so over the top and excitable and so entertaining but by the end of her visit to India she admitted she had found an inner peace,  certainly she seemed much calmer after her meditation.  So did Sleep.  I didn’t go a bundle on him when we met but I was wrong, he is simply a man hooked on life and trying to find the best.  Very open and honest and the star of the group.

One thing worried me.  Why didn’t Roy Walker make more of an appearance?  He flitted through saying very little, maybe Delhi Belly travelled to Jaipur and caught up with him.

And what happened about the big sports wear company withdrawing funding from the athletics organisations.  About three weeks ago Steven Nolan was beside himself with excitement when it was announced  – we’ll be hearing more about this,  he promised – we didn’t and we haven’t.  Certainly there is something going on about funding for young people athletics but not on the scale Steven’s Five Live newsroom announced.

Funny how things just disappear in the media, if it doesn’t happen as expected just ignore any reference.  The late Sir Edward Heath for instance – is he off the hook?  Did the media jump the gun condemning him or is there more to come.

St. Valentine’s Day and not a postman in sight.  A day that brings both disappointment and delight, some girls will have sent themselves a card to arrive in the morning just so they can say to friends that someone somewhere fancies them, for others the genuine article and many will just not be fussed.  I think romance has taken a back seat these days, between the e-mail and the twitters etc. and the general pace of life, I bet some men and boys  just dashed off an electronic message of love.  Not quite the same as trawling through cards to get just the right message.  I was looking for a nice card  but I couldn’t find anything I liked – so many are now to grannies, grandchildren, daughters and sons – customised to drain the last penny from the public.  Pity.

In my school days  boys sent schmoltsy cards to girls to voice their hopes and we had the grace to blush and wonder who it was.

From  teenage years I got a Valentine card faithfully every year, always pretty, always posted to my home, always signed Me or Just Me or Me Again – it varied each year.  Boy friends arrived and left my life and with them any ideas that he might be ME.  It was a mystery.  My parents promised it was nothing to do with them, my brothers promised they weren’t responsible and until the day I was married the mystery remained.

At the wedding reception, our best man, Tom, was reading out the cards and telegrams.  He opened one of the greetings telegrams, and read –  “This is my last Valentine message to you because you now have your own Valentine who will love you for ever.  Signed  Just Me.

I must have looked stunned and everyone wondered why, what did it mean, who was it from, had I some dark secret.  My Mum stood up and told all our guests the story of the cards that kept coming from an admirer.  “To this day Anne doesn’t know who is Me.”

Then our dear family friend Jimmie Wilton stood up, walked over, gave me a hug and announced: “I am Me.”

All those years I could hold my head up going into school, or work, or out partying and honestly say I had a secret admirer and that was great for the moral.  I think of Uncle Jimmie every Valentine’s Day.

So, next year, if you think will I send her – or him – a card, just do.

Terry Wogan has been laid to rest away from the glare of publicity, surrounded by his family and close friends.  The tributes have been very touching and genuine and it’s no wonder,  he was a special man, a ‘spiritual atheist’ who had a deep faith in humanity and a love of his fellow man and woman. Gloria Hunniford introduced us and I remember no more about the programme, the guests or what I said but I do remember this comfy humorous man who lent into my life for a short time and it seemed to me there were only the two of us in the world. A Fond Farewell

I wonder what he thought of Big Brother? I see they are already planning for the next House – Ugg.

I fell foul of it some weeks ago and got hooked – what a puerile programme. Worse, a programme that corrupts the mind like a virus in a computer. I can just see the production team sitting round a table thinking: ‘Where can we take it now, what depths can we plunge?’ Why did I keep watching it? Because it was fascinating, what was going to happen next? Who was going to be ‘AVICTED’? And now we’re having the America and local ‘ALEXTIONS’ coming up.  Along with ALEVEN O’CLOCK it drives me crazy

And as for the Big Brother language!  I am so glad it’s over and I don’t intend getting hooked again, once is enough. Also, the fact that there is so much advertising for betting on line, gaming and casinos, is surely a dangerous thing. There seems to be no regulation any more, anything goes and, like a virus, it enters brains and corrupts.

Lucy Boucher is rapidly becoming a world wide personality, and she’s only three years of age. You may well have heard of this little girl from Glengormley who has weathered the most difficult and complex of illnesses.  From a straightforward birth she thrived, eating and sleeping well and the apple of her parents eye. Within weeks she developed a cold and soon needed urgent medical attention and was rushed to Antrim Area Hospital. Her body was being starved of oxygen, her kidneys were at risk and she suffered heart failure. “We said goodbye to her four times that day,” Chris Boucher told me, “They said they could do no more for her and the plan was to transfer her to the Children’s Hospital at the Royal. Although she survived the journey she continued to deteriorate.”
Nothing was having an effect and it was suggested to Chris and his wife Ciara they might like to have Lucy christened. You can only imagine the pain. Chris’s dad, a retired Methodist minister, baptised his little grand daughter using the only thing at hand, a bottle of Deep River Rock.
Still the fight for her life went on. It was arranged that Lucy be taken by helicopter to Freeman Hospital in Newcastle Upon Tyne where there was an advanced dialyse machine that could cope with the various complications. Months were spent in hospital with her parents close by.

Eventually the little body began to repair except for Lucy’s kidneys. When she was just over two years of age there was talk of a transplant and when he was tested, it was discovered that Chris was a perfect match. “My only worry was how on earth could my big adult kidney fit into her tiny body.” Nothing was left to chance. In Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, in a new pioneering technique a 3D printer produced replicas of the organ and the area of surgery and so it was determined how to proceed. To achieve a successful outcome required one of the delicate machines being adapted to work with such a tiny body. This was done and the advanced technology will now give hope for other ill babies in the future.
Now, after pioneering surgery, Lucy is looking forward to to full and happy life. And she’s a pioneer in the true sense of the word, the first child in the world to take part in a transplant in which 3D printing was used for a successful transplantation of an adult kidney into a child.
Lucy knows she has her daddy’s kidney growing inside her and that it’s making her better, indeed the two often compare scars! At the moment she still wears a nasal gastric tube which boosts calories and nutrients but every day she eats more and grows stronger. Her big brother, five year old Daniel keeps an eye on her and the family are getting used to being stars in America, Australia, Italy, Finland, the UK and Ireland. The press officer at Great Ormond Street had warned them that there would be a flurry of publicity for a few days but has been back to say the story has gone viral throughout Europe and round the world. Lucy takes it all in her stride, charming everyone who comes to visit.

There are still regular checkups at the Royal where the staff know and love this little girl, they shed tears when she left for Newcastle, they realised how ill she was, how the toxins in her body were hampering her growth and denying her a normal life. Now she has a fully functioning kidney, she needs checkups but no dialyses. She’s bouncing, full of fun and looking forward to going to nursery school.
Miracles happen.
