It’s everyday sexism and only serves to discourage more women from entering into politics, particularly women who have younger families.”

In my experience women are made of sterner stuff than to be put off by an old fashioned Ulsterman and can love and care for their families at the same time as caring for the community. In fact this multi skilling only enhances their understand of life and the needs of others and gives courage to tackle the difficult issues. In Thursday’s Belfast Telegraph article ‘It’s our female politicians who must lead drive for equality at Stormont’, Suzanne Breen lists the number of women who have at least reached the glass ceiling if not broken through it and she points out that: “If we are to tackle the lack of women in politics then child-care must top the agenda”.
This is basic and needs to be addressed urgently for all women who ‘work out’ as they say in this part of the world. It used to be grannys and grandpas who helped out with looking after young children, and how valuable was that to both children and their parents; but these days grandparents are often busy people, working well into their 60s even 70s or taking advantage of their retirement to travel. Good child care is important to the child’s growth and social interaction so let’s support those who are fighting for it and so get the balance. Remember how Margaret Thatcher devoted her life to politics, I think at the detriment of her children’s family life judging by what you read and hear. There is no substitute for children and to watch them, and grandchildren, growing up is a wonderful adventure but there is room for both being a mother and a working woman.
A political woman we will be hearing more about is Roisin Lynch and guess what, she has brought up seven children!
I really enjoyed talking to Roisin for a Irish News article, the busy SDLP councillor who has been selected by her party to stand for South Antrim in this year’s Assembly elections. The buzz word at the moment is the Tiger Mother as mentioned in a speech by David Cameron. This is the woman who aspires to having the perfect child, best at this, that and the other but especially qualifications and sport and if they don’t perform they are punished – can you believe it! When my son was in first form he played for the under 14 rugby team. Of course, being a supportive mother, I went along to his first match to cheer him on. I was shocked and in tears not long after the first kick of the ball. I was surrounded by men, some of whom I knew, business and professional, fathers who were shouting at their ‘lads’ to push the opponent out of the way, stand on him, kick him and even one let slip ‘kill’ him. I turned to face the unruly crowd hoping they would be embarrassed into silence but no, I was just another clod of squishy mud under their feet and totally ignored.
There are too many bullies in our society, in every branch of our society. I hope the Tiger Mother is just a figment of Cameron’s imagine.
I often wonder how it is that we have so many good and decent young people when you witness the examples set by their parents.
