What a few days it has been. After holding a secret for a month, last Wednesday night at 10.30 the news of the New Year’s Honours was published and I was able to tell family and friends that I’d been given an MBE for services to journalism, broadcasting and to the community in Northern Ireland. And I’m in good company with the other recipients from this beautiful corner of the world.
I don’t mean to be boastful but it was a shock to the system and a great delight that so many people approved, old friends in Auckland, New Zealand, Australia, America, France, England, Ireland and Scotland. But then so many people are part of this award, you can’t be a journalist without family and friends and especial those people who trust you with their stories, come to you with suggestions and ask for some kind of help.
I joined Ulster Television in 1959 three weeks before the station went on air on Hallowee’n night and that kicked off a career that has given me joy ever since. It was much easier in those days. I came straight from school, no exams to my credit and having been asked to leave at 15 as I was taking up space and would be better doing a secretarial course! How right the headmaster was, my year at college taught me so much and prepared me for the world of work.
An interview, ability to start right away and a raw enthusiasm convinced some one somewhere I was the right material for a new and somewhat innocent television station. I grew with the company from the lowliest clerk to a production assistant and years later a producer/presenter. Between times I worked in industry writing copy for commercial magazines, for the BBC both on radio and for the World Service, for all the local newspapers at some time or another, for a public relations firm and for the Ulster Actors company at the Arts Theatre. Now if that’s not learning I don’t know what is.
Yesterday I had a great time at 89FM radio station in the centre of Belfast chatting with Heidi McAlpin and her dad Colin on their radio programme. We were lamenting that it wouldn’t be possible for a young adult to climb the ladder in this way in this day and age, too many young people looking for too few jobs, employers want to see qualifications before even giving an interview all by way of filtering the numbers I suppose. But it means many won’t get a chance even though they have flair and ability and an eagerness to achieve.
I’ve been fortunate to work with young women over the years and being someone who began at the bottom of the heap was a help to them and we’d often talk and talk about coping in a man’s world and not getting depressed – today it’s much better but 25 years ago women were very much second class citizens and there were some men in positions of power who didn’t like to be challenged by a feisty woman. For instance. When I married ‘within’ the company I had to leave, so had other girls, we were young and there were lots of romances that developed into marriage. We just left! A pat on the head from the managing director, a wedding gift and cheerio. We took it for granted. We thought it was they way things were done until, years after I left, one bride to be did a bit of research and discovered there was no rule or regulation that said one of the couple had to leave their employment – it was of course always the woman – and she broke the mould and made it possible for couples to work together in the future.
The internationally renowned Spanish flamenco dancer Miguel Vargas will be in Belfast next weekend, 9th and 10th January, giving workshops and there is a chance to take part in this final day of his tutorial.
Workshops by this virtuoso choreographer, dancer and teacher are detailed below; he will be teaching dance and singing/clapping (cante y palmas).

At this time of year I like to look back at some of the people I’ve met and their stories. In May I found myself in Forkhill in the cosy kitchen of Christine and Pat Toner. Ken was special.” On that day she had no expectation of a relationship in the future, indeed she laughed at the idea. “No one could ever compare, I’m not looking and never will.” I saw her again a couple of weeks ago and 14 years after her bereavement she was looking stunning and in great form. “Yes, you’ve guessed, I’ve met someone!” She was so excited. “I knew him years ago and suddenly we’ve got together and the important thing is I know Ken would approve.” It was a joy to see her so happy.
It was a year when the marvel of space travel hit the TV scenes again, of EastEnder’s undertaker Les Coker letting his back hair down and his wife still coming to terms with his cross dressing – is she coming round?; the year of Fifty Shades of Grey although 10.30 in the morning of the launch isn’t the ideal time for such an experience also dreadful financial cuts to culture and essential services. Quick as a flash, straight faced he asked, “Do you think he’d turn our water into wine?”
Well, so much for looking back. When you’re young the limbo time between Christmas and the end of the New Year holidays is hopeful and exciting, as you get older it’s a time of thinking ahead to another year and what it might hold. For you my wish is it will hold happiness and peace.

Catherine Schubert was born there and emigrated to the States where she met her husband. They later worked their way east to Winnipeg and as one of the “Overlanders” walked from there to B.C. She was pregnant with their third child and Rose was the first white baby born in B.C. They later moved to the Armstrong area and we have a mountain named Rose Swanson after that girl.

More importantly, the power that runs the world wants to put a RFID microchip in our body making us total slaves to them. This chip matches perfectly with the Mark of the Beast in the Bible, more specifically in Revelation 13:16-18:
“He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.”
Referring to the last days, this could only be speaking of a cashless society, which we have yet to see, but are heading towards. Otherwise, we could still buy or sell without the mark amongst others if physical money was still currency. This Mark couldn’t be spiritual because the word references two different physical locations. If it was spiritual it would just say in the forehead. RFID microchip implant technology will be the future of a one world cashless society containing digital currency. It will be implanted in the right-hand or the forehead, and we cannot buy or sell without it. Revelation 13:11-18 tells us that a false prophet will arise on the world scene doing miracles before men, deceiving them to receive this Mark. Do not be deceived! We must grow strong in Jesus. AT ALL COSTS, DO NOT TAKE IT!
“Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name” (Revelation 14:9-11).
People have been saying the end is coming for many years, but we needed two key things. One, the Third Temple, and two, the technology for a cashless society to fulfill the prophecy of the Mark of the Beast.

Jesus came to free us from the bondage of sin. The everlasting fire was prepared for the devil and his angels due to disobedience to God’s law. If we do the same, what makes us any different than the devil? Jesus says unless we repent, we shall perish. For sin is the transgression of the law. We must walk in the Spirit so we may not fulfill the lusts of the flesh, being hatred, fornication, drunkenness and the like. Whoever practices such things will not inherit the kingdom (Galatians 5:16-26). If we sin, we may come before Jesus to ask for forgiveness (1 John 2:1-2). Evil thoughts are not sins, but rather temptations. It is not until these thoughts conceive and give birth by our own desires that they become sin (James 1:12-15). When we sin, we become in the likeness of the devil’s image, for he who sins is of the devil (1 John 3:8); but if we obey Jesus, in the image of God. For without holiness, we shall not see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14).
The oldest religion in the world is holiness through faith (James 1:27). What religion did Adam and Eve follow before the fall? Jesus, Who became the last Adam, what religion does He follow? Is He not holy? He never told us to follow the rituals and traditions of man but to take up our cross and follow Him (Luke 9:23). There are many false doctrines being taught leading people astray.
