Does An Address Matter?
Once upon a time I was born in The Barne, Silverstream, Greenisland, Co. Antrim and I grew up at that magical address. The Barne was indeed a sturdy barn converted by Madam Drinkwater and bought by my uncle in the late 1930s. The silver stream ran through Madam’s garden and I sat by the little fairy house watching the water chuckle its way to the lough. Each year we mean to be organised but suddenly it creeps up and it’s manic. Christmas. Well, wear blue. BLUE is the colour of tranquility, patience, harmony love and devotion! You can’t go wrong. GREEN is an alternative, steadying, stabilising, the colour for generosity and vitality. But then, PURPLE cools the nerves, helps with self esteem, nobility and enlightenment. NAVY is one of the colours of power, beloved by teachers and bankers while BROWN is orderly, conventional and homely.
Take your pick or mix them all and you can warble, ‘I can sing a rainbow’ and mean it.
To me colour is a vital part of life, how much better when the sky is blue, the smell of a red rose, walking bare foot on the green grass. The meaning of colour is also beautiful and I think reasonably accurate. RED stimulates, warms and cheers, a colour of excitement and passion. Good to wear at an interview or for a heavy date! PINK on the other hand donates love, beauty and kindness. So many little girls love pink, I know one who will wear nothing else but – dolls have to be dressed in pink and her bedroom is pink from floor to ceiling. She’ll grow out of it! ORANGE is an invigorating colour, stimulates courage and flamboyance and YELLOW excites the nervous system and intellect. Good for Christmas day as it also denotes joy, optimism and cheer. Although maybe WHITE would be appropriate – cooling, restful, purity and simplicity, that’s for after Christmas dinner when someone else is washing the dishes!
GREY is conservative and balanced, whilst BLACK is dramatic and serious, perhaps a better colour for a first date. A lot of people associate BURGUNDY with school uniforms – ugg – while earthy colours put people at their ease and everyone loves an earth mother.
Indigo Magic
Lastly INDIGO, wisdom, self-mastery, insight and spirituality. This is a fascinating colour, rich mix of Papal purple and royal blue, unusual, striking, different. Just like ‘indigo children’, a concept developed in the 1970s and attributed to children who are believed to be geniuses, sometimes with supernatural traits. They are confident, feel they are special and should be revered, they fight the rules that don’t suit them, school can be a nonsense because they have a higher knowledge, they are creative but anti-social and withdrawn unless they are with others of the same intelligence. You know the expression ‘old soul’ that’s one of their traits, ‘old head on young shoulders’. I have one characteristic although I wouldn’t claim to be ‘indigo’ although it is my favour colour. I fight with electricity and batteries, especially in radio and television studios. I’ve stories to back this up. At the worst possible time machines failed to work, microphones had to be replaced, recording equipment gave up the ghost. I was told it was something to do with my electrical make-up. Sorry not to reply sooner – only found my comment box today! The only Silverstream House I know of was along the Shore Road near Belfast High School. Madam Drinkwater’s daughter and family – McGonigal – lived there followed by the Martin family. Madam’s house was nearby and later lived in by Mr. Haydock who I believe ran a chain of chemists, not sure of his house name but it was Silverstream something. Across the road was a big house owned by William Robb a sea captain and again I think his house, which ran down to the Lough, also had a Silverstream in it! This is quite confusing but I never came across the name Berkeley Deane Wise. Now all those lovely addresses are just numbers on the Shore Road – no house names and no townland names.
