Beautiful Paris Will Not Be Brought To Its Knees
Friday 13th November 2015 was a frightening game changer for all of us and since then terrorist threats are invading Europe. But what can be done? Everyone saying that the terrorists won’t win, evil will be crushed, good will prevail. Brotherhood of Man? Forgive your Enemy? Love your neighbour? Etc Etc. Do you think these men and women care if you love them? For goodness sake.
I just hope there is someone somewhere who has an answer. The death toll is heartbreaking, the injuries maybe even worse, the lives that have been changed for ever because of post traumatic stress.
I listened throughout Friday night into Saturday morning, watched television through Saturday and like a lot of other people I began to get desensitised with the constant repeat of news because broadcast companies had nothing to tell or show us except the same scenes of carnage, the same vox pops, similar comments, government representatives and their platitudes. You could be forgiven for thinking there were no other atrocities happening in the world, there were, terrible things that, to my mind, should have been covered in more detail but the focus was on Paris.
This Facebook entry seems relevant.
Since the weekend there has been constant ‘breaking’ news to report especially with the perpetrators being hunted down with, hopefully, some success. There has also been time for people to get to grips with what happened with some important reporting and comment and the 30 minute interview Steven Nolan conducted with Michael O’Connor from South Shields who was at the rock concert and shielded his girlfriend with his own body. Problem there is young Michael’s interview, given when he was at his most vulnerable and painting a very graphic picture of the horrors what went on in the concern hall, was repeated over and over and he has been the focus of press attention since and will have no time to recover. The stories are beginning to come out and the bravery of people is to be applauded.
But then what about the media? How difficult for all those on duty since Friday, snap decisions to be made, time to be filled, instant research, the dangers reporters and cameramen put themselves in to bring us the news. It’s a vicious, vicious circle.
It will take time to unravel this latest atrocity and we must keep focused and extend what prayers and help we can to those involved – and that includes government representatives. It must be an awful time for them taking advice from all quarters and trying to make sense and plan ahead.
Musgrave Park Hospital
Home last Thursday from Musgrave having had a new knee (my second) fitted last Monday. My thanks to surgeon, theatre staff, admissions, nurses, physios, cooks and cleaners et al – what a team. Thanks also to my room mates, Anne, Violet and Ellen and Margaret who left first. We had fun, shared pain, exchanged our experiences under the knife. My best wishes to them all and to all who attend Musgrave for surgery. No better place.

It’s getting chilly and the beautiful autumn days of warmth and mellow fruitfulness draw to an end.
We are really getting into the Christmas advertisement campaigns with John Lewis leading the way apparently. 19 year old Aurora Aksnes from Bergan Norway sings Noel Gallagher song Half the World Away and a little girl sends the man in the moon a present to cheer him up. A minor work of art, a bit slushy to put it mildly, by then it is that time of year. The alternative version is more gritty – the man in the moon turns his zapper towards the earth and blows it up!
Pity we don’t have a John Lewis to visit, if they have this much imagination their stores at Christmas must be quite fascinating – if you like that kind of thing. I prefer our own little craft and family shops where you can find unique gifts and support home industry. Having said that, I am guilty of doing some shopping from the catalogues that arrive with every post. When you are somewhat housebound it is a great service.
Columbanus Returns to Bangor, Co. Down
It’s taken a long time to gather together all that is going to make next weekend so special. With his colleagues, Kenneth Irvine has curated a festival set in Bangor, full of colour, history and worship celebrating the life St. Columbanus who was born in Leinster and died in Italy November 615.
Columbanus, an Irish missionary, a writer, teacher and a man who loved nature, founded a number of monasteries in Europe, most notably Luxeuil Abbey in France and Bobbio Abbey in Italy; his influence lasts to this day not only with the Festival but as patron of motorcyclists and with the formal proposal before the Vatican to have this religious man recognised as Patron Saint of Europe.
Columbanus left his home in Meath to study under Sinell, Abbot of Cluaninis in Lough Erne. He then moved to Bangor Abbey Co. Down and remained there until he was 40 when he began his travels.
“We are aiming to cover much ground as possible,” Kenneth explained. “Columbanus was a man of many parts and the concert on Friday night will include the Boat Song he wrote when rowing up the River Rhine. One of the talks on Saturday will be given by Barry Sloan, a Methodist minister living and working in Germany for 15 years; he saw himself walking in the footsteps of Columbanus leaving Ireland for Europe. Then, a couple of years ago he took a sabbatical, came back to Ireland, got a lift to Bangor station then hitch hiked from Bangor along the Columbanus trail to Dublin and on to Bobbio in the Kingdom of the Lombards Italy, the place where Columbanus died 1400 years ago.”

When a hand of guidance positioned the two beside each other some time ago at a Philharmonic performance of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem in St. Anne’s Cathedral, the conversation came round to the Columbanus Festival and Lord Eames readily agreed to lead the united service. Like most little girls she filled tiny bottles with crushed rose petals and water but as her mother was a beautician she was encouraged to follow this initiative and was at that time mixing and blending in her kitchen and so began a worldwide business. When Estee Lauder took over the company there were ‘issues’ and she opted out but has since set up a new fragrance business, Jo Loves, and she still creates her scents at her kitchen table.
This is the woman who worked with the greatest parfumeurs and has drawn her fragrances from unusual sources, the smell of lime blossoms along the Champs Elysees or the scent of wood warmed in the sun as you sit in a sandalwood chair in the Middle East even ginger tea in a Chinese restaurant. And if you close your eyes after spraying the appropriate fragrance you can walk through a rose garden in the early evening and almost touch the beautiful blossoms.
