The Excellence of Acting

There have been some good things and some terrible things in the last week.  One little cameo was the BBC Two drama The Dresser.  Sir Ian McKellen as the dresser for ‘Sir’, the elderly Shakespearian thespian played by Sir Anthony Hopkins.  Both actors are now in the mid 70s and bring to anything they do years of honing their craft to perfection.

It was simply marvellous – dark, funny, frightening and enthralling.  It also showed the understanding writer Ronald Harwood has of the theatre that goes on behind the scenes and the fragile nature of the characters we call actors.

Tricking and Treating

We had three visitations from young trick or treaters at Hallowee’n.  First two little boys, well dressed in spooky gear as were they all, just looked at me.  “Are you going to sing?” I asked.  Nothing.  “Are you going to say something?”  Relief came over one little face and he said: “Happy Christmas”.  The second two were a lot younger probably about six and they sang Hallowee’n is coming etc. right down to the last line, usually left out, “Your Old Man Too.”  I was impressed.  Also impressed that their Dad stood at the gate until they had finished and pocketed their contribution and then he walked them to the next house.  Wise.

Finally two young ladies I think about 12.  Again they just shoved a hat at me.  “Are you going to sing?” I asked.  One of them burst into song and it was lovely but not the usual rhyme.  No reference to the goose getting fat.  I applauded her and said I was expecting Hallowee’n is Coming.  “Well,” she said somewhat truculently, “I like mine better!”  That young woman will go far!

When I was invited to the Butterfly Club, a charity organisation established in 1991 and based in Belfast, I met several men who that evening greeted me wearing their female wardrobe. They looked great and we had a lot of fun and I came to understand so much more about transgender. This was way before Gay Pride and way before homosexuality was an acknowledged fact of life.
That evening they were females and I was asked to refer to them as such.

Linda explained that everyone knows several transgendered people without being aware of it. “Our membership is drawn from every part of Northern Ireland, even Donegal and from every area of society.” Another young woman agreed: “You must remember we’re not dealing with concepts here, we’re dealing with people.”
