This little photo is simply entitled ‘No One Is Born A Rasist’. It’s beautiful and sends a very important message to the world.
Hamlet at QFT was brilliant (a recorded live show from the Barbican Theatre) although I think Benedict Cumberbatch may have lost the run of himself; apparently during last week after an evening performance in London, not only did he and the cast make a fund raising appeal for refugees at the curtain call but apparently he called the government the f***ing government. I take issue with curtain call speeches and certainly using language like this, to an audience of very mixed ages, is totally unacceptable. Having said that, as I wrote last Sunday, he was a very excellent Hamlet.
And yesterday’s rugby was electric but why so many beards I wonder. New Zealand won on the handsome stakes but also the better team obviously and that sexy haka – man ‘o man as Danny Baker would say on his Saturday morning radio show on the wonderful 5 Live.

Visionaries
It’s a pleasure to write about two extremely talented Belfast men who are in the news at the moment, John Marley executive producer of the tremendous TV series ‘Britain’s Ultimate Pilots: Inside the RAF’ and sculptor Tim Shaw member of the Royal Academy of Art.
In his programme John takes us on a high speed journey inside the ‘bubble’, sitting right beside the pilot as he twists and turns wingtip to wingtip with his colleagues, we go on board a Typhoon jet fighter, we whirl round the sky with a Chinook helicopter and best of all, on board hurricanes and spitfires.
John’s company, Archie Productions (called after his dog), took two years to persuade the RAF powers that be to open their doors and allow filming in operation rooms and to interview these skilled men; the first three episodes have gained viewers every week with the final episode being aired tonight on BBC 2 but there are high hopes of repeats so successful has it been.
During preparations for tonight’s programme news comes through that there’s been an accident at nearby Shoreham air display. There’s shock and the realisation they have to abort their part in the show, the mood changes. But other pilots are destined for a display in Bournemouth and they have to keep their mind on the job. “Speed, drama, power and bravery,” and as one spectator says, “the joy of heavy metal.”

He’s making it big but he has never turned his back on his roots and has been responsible for many young men and women making the grade in radio and television. “People took risks with me,” he said, “gave me chances and shared their knowledge, so it’s the same deal.”
Bloody Friday revisited
Tim Shaw, originally from Cavehill Road and now living and working in Cornwall, spends much of his time travelling the world to fulfil commissions and exhibit his work. He’s one of Britain’s leading figurative sculptors who creates in various materials from bronze to bin bags; in November 2013 he was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts, a major recognition as Royal Academicians are considered to be amongst the greatest names in the art world.
His latest exhibition runs for three months in the F.E McWilliams Gallery Banbridge. It’s entitled ‘Mother, the Air is Blue, the Air is Dangerous’ and depicts his experience when, as a seven year old boy, he’s trapped in a cafe in Belfast city centre when a bomb explodes. It was Friday 21 July 1972, the day that has gone down in history as Bloody Friday when nine people were murdered and 130 injured with many more traumatised for life. Tim was with his mother and although they mercifully escaped injury, the experience stayed with the boy until manhood and has been an influence in a lot of his work over 30 years. The McWilliams installation depicts the chaos of that afternoon, the air filled with flying debris, fear and pandemonium, bombs going off all round.
He is prolific in his work, sculptures range from the 15 foot ‘Drummer’ in Truro Cornwall, to the now famous political
statement ‘Casting a Dark Democracy’, a terrifying depiction of an Abu Ghraib prisoner towering above a pool of oil with an unremitting heartbeat, to his 2010 the installation ‘Parliament’ at the McWilliams Gallery.
‘Parliament’ proved a clever concept comparing a parliament of rooks to members of Parliament at Westminster. The soundscape was ingenious, ‘hear hear’ and ‘order order’ with well recognised voices pontificating, a Thatcher here, a Powell there and a Paisley everywhere, all descending into chaos. The soundscape for ‘Mother The Air Is Blue’ is equally arresting and chilling, the weird wind of tragedy and the shadowy figures running for their lives.
Tim has dedicated this extraordinary piece of work to the victims of that day and those who have suffered across the globe and particularly the school boy, 14 year old Stephen Parker who lost his life when a no warning bomb ripped through a row of shops on the Cavehill Road. Stephen died whilst trying to save others.
Tim and John draw their audience into a space where there is no half measures, sometimes uncomfortable, their imagination stretches and challenges.
