What a weekend when it comes to sport. Yesterday was mega with Ireland demolishing Canada and then Japan pipping South Africa in the dying moments of their World Rugby Cup game.

Jose Mourinho – smouldering and passionate or sulky and disgruntled?  

Then there was the Diego Costa incident on the football pitch when his team Chelsea played Arsenal , big talking point for football fans and many are now taking a second look at the once beautiful Jose Mourinho – not the dream boat I once thought him.

The one thing about the rugby is the example this game is for young people, the discipline, the camaraderie, the fact that a spokesman for the South African players congratulated the opponents and simply said: “Japan played better than we did.” No excuses but the determination to do better next time. The referee comes under criticism of course but mainly they hold the decision making power and they deal with the captain of the team not threatened by the players en masse. The crowd too are good natured, the Irish spectators delighted with the Japanese win and giving them great encouragement.

Then there was the Murray brothers (above) doubles game in the Davis Cup being played in Glasgow. Incidentally, is it fair that the bagpipes have been banned from the Rugby Cup games? Are they an unfair advantage for the Scottish team!

Andy Murray has turned out to be a gem in the crown of sport, outspoken yet loyal and his comment about he and Jamie supporting each other – “as brothers do,” was very touching. Good luck to Andy today with another gruelling match this afternoon against Australian Bernard Tomic in the Davis Cup 2015 semi-final and the partnership playing next week.  Later today, throw  in Singapore Formula One Grand Prix and Downton Abbey! If you’re a couch potato you might be cross there is such an emphasis on sport, if you like sport you’ll be in seventh heaven.  If you like Downton Abbey you’re quids in until Christmas.

Don’t let anyone tell me spiders are harmless. More and more people are experiencing bites and they are convinced these are from a spider. I’ve seen one woman’s legs with three big scabs; following a lot of worry that she had developed ulcers the doctor said no but seemed mystified – now she’s sure it was an eight legged monster. Last year a reader sent me pictures of his daughter’s legs where she had been bitten – a terrible mess and again she says she knew for a fact it was a spider. And there are other ways these creatures can cause trauma. I was standing in the bath about to settle down when a huge black interloper leapt out from behind the taps. I recoiled and fell over the side of the bath splat onto the floor. Not a happy situation but thankfully no damage done – to me anyway, can’t say the same for the spider. The stories are coming in thick and fast. A huge spider under a girl’s pillow, a man woke to find one sitting on his chest – these are all stories told to me so it isn’t hearsay. Advice is, shake out duvets, pillows, clothes, towels. Look behind taps, piles of magazine, food stores – just about everything. Look before you leap, these creatures are fearful. According to the pharmacist, if bitten take antihistamine and apply hydrocortisone cream and if there is no improvement, get to the doctor.  I know spiders are helpful in the house, I know they shouldn’t be killed – no creature should be – but they do tend to rush out when you least expect them so no wonder the majority of people I know, men and women, recoil with alarm.

A montage of the solar system (above) shows just how ’round’ planets are.  But for the definitive answer who better to ask than Terry Moseley of the Irish Astronomical Association.
“They are round (or very nearly so) because gravity pulls the material of which they are made into the smallest possible shape, which is a sphere. It’s basically the same force as that which makes water run downhill to the lowest available point – the sea. Irregularities such as mountains are in fact continually trying to subside to a lower level, but on that small small scale the rigidity of the rock is greater than the force of gravity.
“But in fact the Earth is not a perfect sphere – it bulges slightly at the equator because of the centrifugal force of its diurnal rotation: its equatorial diameter is 42 km greater than its polar diameter! And Jupiter and Saturn are even more ‘flattened’  because they spin even faster that the Earth.
“The Earth is not quite an ellipse either. It’s what’s called an ‘oblate spheroid’. That means that it’s flattened towards the equator but the flattening actually extends slightly more to the South of the equator as well, so it’s slightly pear-shaped. It’s even slightly more complicated than that, but you don’t really need to know all that detail!”

Spare a thought for David Beckham. His boys don’t seem keen on playing football and he says, it’s heartbreaking. But he’s obviously a good dad and understood when his eldest told him, ‘Every time that I step onto the field, I know people are saying, you know, ‘This is David Beckham’s son,’ and if I’m not as good as you, then it’s not good enough.’ David’s reply, ‘Okay, stop right there… You play because you want to play.” No pressure.
