Curtain Up At The Lyric
I was very pleased to be invited to the Lyric yesterday and a rehearsed reading of Jane Coyle’s first play, ‘The Lantern Man’ which premiered at An Culturlann (Féile an Phobail) and at the Lyric on Friday and Saturday. We were a very appreciative audience and certainly the story held our attention. A rehearsed reading is a very neat way of assessing the interest of the public and showcasing your work, in this case six actors and a scene setter sitting at the side of the stage telling us where the action was taking place. No costumes, no sets, a few props and it’s almost as good as a full blown production. In this case anyway because the script is the thing, you listen and learn. It has been reworked since its first outing at the MAC’s Pick’n’Mix 2014 and according to Jane the signs were looking promising for a full production when those damned funding cuts intervened, yet Jane remains upbeat.
“We have a super cast and director, all of whom have given generously of time and spirit. I am eternally grateful to them, especially to those who were involved first time around.”
Jane’s play is based on a real life discovery of a collection of World War 1 lantern slides in the attic of a Belfast church. Set in Dublin at Christmas 1915, Johnny McGrath returns from action on the Western Front to find he has unexpectedly inherited hundreds of glass lantern slides from Uncle Dermot, a wedding photographer who decided to go to the Front to photograph the young Irish men who had volunteered to join up, mainly because there was no work at home. Johnny decides to put the slides on show to tell the public the real story of the war, and they are difficult to view. Projected onto a wall at the back of the stage, real images of the trenches, blood and mud and one lasting photograph of a rotting skeleton in uniform lying in the mire of war – all to the sound track, Pack Up Your Troubles.
I won’t give the story line away sufficient to say the slides bring two families together and afford comfort to the bereaved, the characters all finely drawn by Jane, each with their own deep and personal suffering.
Although this is her first play Jane is a respected arts journalist and critic who has written many scripts and documentaries but this venture has been exciting. “A great feeling to hear the applause!”

The children are excellent, all members of Bill Kenwright’s production who travel to the various venues, three teams of seven, aged from 8 to 15 years, known as Teams Do, Re and Mi – ‘ Do ‘ teams turn to appear last week, their first time on stage as the young von Trapps, perfect in every way. Interesting that they travel with five chaperons, one is a teacher and a dedicated teacher travels with them as well. Children have to study for 15 hours each week and where ever they go they are taken on educational tours in that part of the world, here it includes the Titanic and the Giants Causeway. I would suggest W5 as well, children of all ages get great excitement out of this wonderland at the Odyssey as it used to be called. These teams will work until September when another set of young artists will take over. What a terrific experience at a tender age.
It must be hard for any actress to follow all the Maria’s there have been but Danielle Hope gives the part her own touch, girlish at the beginning but maturing as she took on more responsibility in the household von Trapp, eventually marrying the Captain, Steven Houghton. For me he isn’t martial enough and while other costumes are most attractive, his suits, and his demeanour, aren’t sufficiently smart for a proud Austrian naval officer.
Although the singing and the acting is good, the set is the star of the show for me, the Opera House stage has such depth especially in the scenes in the Convent, huge tall stain glass windows and book cases, the sweeping staircase in von Trapp’s mansion and the vibrant colours please the eye. With mountains all round and the sky coming to the edge of the stage we are right in the action. When I looked in the programme to find the designers name I was delighted to read it is Gary McCann from County Armagh, his design credits are impressive and commissions coming up include Vienna Stage Opera, Santa Fe Opera plus work in Holland, Dallas and Brisbane.
This is a very professional production and of course, you come away singing – and you waken up the next day still singing! What more could you ask for.

“The Irish Astronomical Association will be holding a public observing evening for the maximum of the PERSEID METEOR SHOWER, at Delamont Country Park, Killyleagh, Co Down.
Meteors (popularly known as ‘shooting stars’) are produced by small particles in space, entering the atmosphere at high speed, and ‘streaking across the sky’. The Perseids are tiny particles from Comet Swift-Tuttle, which last passed near the Earth in 1992. These meteors appears to originate from a ‘radiant’ in Perseus, not far from the famous ‘Double Cluster’.
This event will be held on Wednesday evening, 12 August from about 10.p.m. to late.
The shower will peak on the evening of 12-13th August, and is particularly rich in very bright meteors, or fireballs. There will be no Moonlight, so observing prospects are good.
But the Perseids can be seen from anywhere that the sky is clear and dark. You’ll need to be well away from cities and towns to escape the light pollution, and you should look for a site with a good clear view all round, if possible. You don’t even need binoculars, just your own eyes. If coming out from a bright room, wait at least 10 minutes for your eyes to adapt to the dark outside.
The meteors can appear anywhere in the sky, but they will all appear to be coming from a point in the constellation Perseus, which will be rising in the NE part of the sky as twilight darkens. It then gets higher up, moving round to become very high up in the South, later in the night.”
If you are REALLY keen, wait until the small hours (say 1- 3 a.m.) to see the most meteors!
The Power Of Suggestion
Does hypnotism scare you? It did me after seeing entertainer Barry Sinclair in the Arts Theatre many years ago. His was a stage act unlike Alan Gilchrist’s approach to this ‘therapeutic aid’. As Northern Ireland’s leading hypnotherapist Alan has been dealing with clients for over 26 years and has had remarkable results be it for overcoming smoking, over eating, blushing or stress amongst a host of other things. Barry Sinclair on the other hand is a magician and a hypnotist who mixes stage entertainment with more serious clinics.
One trick he performed was bringing members of the audience on to stage and telling them they’d lost their belly button – panic, everyone running round looking for their belly button! When he brought them back to reality they were fine, went back to their seats complete with belly button. Except one man. Next morning he arrived at the theatre very distressed still looking for this important part of his anatomy. Thankfully it wasn’t long before he realised he was intact.
That image lasted with me, I found it disturbing and I shunned away from the practice.
Then I met Alan Gilchrist who doesn’t employ stage craft with clients at his Lisburn Road clinic where for over 26 years he has been successfully treating thousands of people for a wide variety of conditions. He was just establishing himself when he came on my programme Ask Anne and a young actor appearing in the Lyric Theatre volunteered for a ‘stop smoking’ session. It worked well and Brendan Coyle stopped smoking for over eight months.
Sadly he’s back, witness Mr. Bates in Downton Abbey – that’s our guinea pig and he’s back on the fags! I was a smoker yet today I think it’s really horrible to see young women done up to the nines with a cigarette sticking out of their mouths, we used to call them cancer sticks, perhaps we should return to that expression.
Back to Alan Gilchrist. With his special Fast Track technique he tailors his treatment to the patient, be it to quit cigarettes, loose weight, stop blushing or overcome stress or be fitted with an imaginary gastric band. I decided to put him to the test. “You don’t need the Gastroband,” he told me with confidence. “That’s only for obese people.” How does it work? “Hypnosis and visualisation techniques are used convince the subconscious mind the person has had a gastric band operation, tricks the mind into believing the body does not require as much food to feel full up. That’s not for you,” he added, “all you need a weight loss session, jump up on the couch.”
Then came a mask and earphones, Alan talking me through relaxation and ways to over come bad eating habits, all the time with patterns of coloured lights via the mask.
Alan’s clinic is very restful, the waiting room is shades of lavender and grey, Nina Simone singing softly, coffee on hand and a chance to read many of the letters from satisfied clients delighted that their lives had improved since their visit for many and varied reasons.
In his therapy room, Alan had asked me about my eating habits, I admitted to digestive biscuits, he told me I was a nibbler and a grazer but that through persuasion he would make me face my problem and overcome it.
Treatments such as smoking, slimming, gastroband and relaxation normally require one 30 minute session costing £95, difficulties such as anxiety, phobias, confidence and insomnia will probably require more than one visit with the fee £85 per session. These fees include a tape which reinforces the treatment and ideally should be played once a day – although never when driving.
It’s fascinating talking to this man, born in Carrickfergus, childhood in Belfast, studied phycology, found it long winded and boring so looked beyond this to hypnotherapy where he delves into lifestyles to work out the whys and wherefores of the current situation and then treating it. “But you can’t change the past,” he said, “but you can change the future, if you want a plant to grow why pull up the roots to look at it.”
So his message is positive and sometimes surprising. Take the client who suffered dreadful insomnia. It turned out that his mother liked repeating the children’s prayer at bedtime:
‘Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
If I shall die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take’.
The result? He always kept the light on and believed if he didn’t sleep he wouldn’t die. Of course he did sleep but not a lot. Turned out a heavy smoker had been allowed to light his grandfather’s cigarettes, an unwise party trick when he was eight years of age that lead to chronic problems. A young woman, sexually abused in her childhood, was terrified that fat women are expectant women, she ended up being severely anorexic and became a lesbian such was her fear of pregnancy. In all these cases Alan helped them overcome their distress.
As for me? I’m doing really well. One of Alan’s visual aids concerns two mirrors, the left one shows me and my rolls of fat! The right one shows me as I’d like to be, thin, toned and ultra happy! Positive mental attitude and a good dollop of hypnosis – as Alan puts it: “A state of relaxation with a state of heightened awareness induced by suggestion.” Doesn’t matter how you put it, if it works that’s the main thing.
