After the extraordinary voyage from earth to Pluto controversy rages, is this still a Dwarf Planet or can it now be upgraded to fully grownup Planet? In fact some conspiracy theorists wonder if NASA have used digital technology to prove the space craft actually got there to send back genuine pictures!
You may not think all of this is important but of course it is, especially to those who know and study the universe; used to be the heavens but we’ve moved out a few million miles in recent years into new territory.

Terry Moseley is one of these experts who knows a thing or two. As President of the Irish Astronomical Association on numerous occasions until last year, he has been a constant source of interest and information. This business of holding back a decision to upgrade little Pluto, 100 million years old and a favourite subject in quizzes, is exercising Terry and many of his colleagues. This is his take on the whole affair. Retain it’s ‘dwarf’ description as advised by senior astronomers ?
“I humbly beg to differ!” says our man. “As Pluto is now the biggest object beyond Neptune, let’s reinstate it as a planet! Especially with its 5 moons – more than the combined total for Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars! And Charon is in fact the tenth largest Moon in the Solar System, out of a total of at least 174!
Arguments for:
* It’s the largest object known beyond Neptune
* It’s very nearly spherical – more so than Saturn!
* It has its own significant system of moons – see above
* It has nearly swept its own orbital path clear of other objects – as much as one would expect, given the very large distances between objects with such large orbits. In fact, if that was an important criterion, then Neptune would not be a planet, as it has not ‘cleared its orbit’, since Pluto comes inside the orbit of Neptune at perihelion.
* Its orbital eccentricity is only slightly more than that of Mercury
* Its density is much greater than that of either Jupiter or Saturn
* For historical reasons: it was always regarded as a planet since its discovery.
* It’s much bigger than Ceres, the other object to be re-classified as a dwarf planet
Nine is a nice number! – And by coincidence, that’s nine reasons!!
Terry’s word carries a lot of weight, let’s hope he wins his case.

I had a dilemma two weeks ago and I’ve been thinking about it since – whether to see out the terrific match between the stunning Dustin Brown and Rafael Nadal, or channel hop. I don’t play tennis but I love live television and Wimbledon is a favourite. Not always so, I was pregnant with my first child due on 26th June but the little dote didn’t arrive until 12th July so I was housebound and endured Wimbledon for two long weeks! Didn’t watch again for about 35 years but now I’m back on track. Anyway, that wasn’t my dilemma.
The beautiful one was thrashing Nadal but EastEnders was looming on the other side and I had to see Carol and Shirley go head to head when Carol admitted to sleeping with her arch enemy’s husband. As it turned out the confrontation between the two women was powerful and, unexpectedly, the best example of what it’s like to live with a mastectomy.
Let me set the scene.
Carol Jackson gets the all-clear from her cancer surgeon following a double mastectomy. Her children are treating her like an old woman, wrapping her in a lace stole and making her copious cups of tea. She wants to celebrate her news, return to normality and ends up having a drink with Shirley’s husband, nothing more.
Shirley discovers their tryst, accuses Carol of chatting up her old man and a row breaks out, at the end of which Carol shouts at the woman she dislikes most in the world – “Ok, I slept with your husband.”

I wanted to know what next, hence turning over from the tennis to BBC for the next episode.
The news has gone round Albert Square, she’s persona non grata! However, she goes to the couple and apologises for lying, nothing had happened just as Buster had told his wife. But why did she make such a claim?
Then comes the nub of plot. The two arch enemies, begin to argue. “Why should I believe you?” “Because I have nothing for him.” Carol takes her prostheses from inside her bra and throws them across the room, shouting: “And I don’t need our sympathy.” Shirley: “You’re not going to get it.” Suddenly the conversation takes an intimate and honest turn. Carol explained she just wanted to feel normal for once, and not have people pitying her. For too long she had been pretending to be whole avoiding facing the fact that she has lost a precious part of her womanhood and that fact went deep. “What bloke is going to look at me? I can’t even wear a low cut blouse.” With genuine caring Shirley asks, “Is that all you think you are, a pair of boobs? You are an attractive woman get out of here and get on with your life. Look at me,” she adds, ”I’ve nothing up here either, I’m not exactly blessed.” Then Carol comes out with the killer line: “But you’ve got nipples.”
Loosing Confidence
Shirley’s advice is, if you want people to change the way they think about you, you have to start changing how you think about yourself. Carol’s response – “People say you’ll get back to normal, I’m not normal, I’m a freak”, and admits she can’t and hasn’t looked at her chest and her scars because they are repulsive, she’s lost the part of her that is being a woman, a mother and a lover. Basically she has lost confidence and her companion that afternoon realises this.
Because I know what she is talking about I found it very moving. The trauma of losing such an intimate part of your body through amputation is more than difficult for a woman but usually that isn’t talked about, it more about – was the operation painful? What is chemotherapy like? Are you having radiotherapy? Will you be all right? No one had asked Carol about her scars; for the first time the subject was broached and gently Shirley persuades the woman to go upstairs and stand in front of the mirror. She unbuttons her shirt, undoes her front fastening bra and turns to Shirley; after some time she opens the bra and allows Shirley to look. Shirley smiles, “It’s not bad, different but not bad, see for yourself.” And she does and it’s the beginning of acceptance.
Positive Mental Attitude
Attitude is vitally important, to friends and family as well as the patient. If you can manage it, humour helps. Once I interviewed a woman who who was given a bag of budgie seed to put inside her bra after a mastectomy as was common before silicone prostheses. “Grand,” she said “till I was washing the loo and bent over too far and it fell in.” What did she do? “Fished it out and washed and dried it with a towel and put it in the hot press. Went back after a couple of days and the seeds had sprouted!”
It’s people like that that get you through the dark days.
